Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dynamo, Vol. 1 of 2: Its Theory, Design, and Manufacture On the continuous-current side the carbon collecting brush still holds the field, but much work, both experimental and theoretical, has been done towards the elucidation of its action. The treatment of commutation and of the sparking limitations of the dynamo has therefore been recast and expanded in the light of later researches, especially those of Prof. E. Arnold, to whom the acknowledgments of all students of this difficult problem are due. Within recent times the continued endeavour to reduce the necessary size and therefore cost of dynamos has led to a remarkable revival of the use of auxiliary commutating poles, with results that have amply justified their re-intro duction. Their theory has therefore here been considered more fully and at such length as space permitted. The mechanical construction of the commutator, both of the V-type and with shrink-rings, has also been treated in greater detail in view of the higher speeds which now obtain. Book Synopsis Self-Exciting Fluid Dynamos by : Keith Moffatt
Download or read book Self-Exciting Fluid Dynamos written by Keith Moffatt and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-25 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the origins and evolution of magnetic fields in planets, stars and galaxies, this book gives a basic introduction to magnetohydrodynamics and surveys the observational data, with particular focus on geomagnetism and solar magnetism. Pioneering laboratory experiments that seek to replicate particular aspects of fluid dynamo action are also described. The authors provide a complete treatment of laminar dynamo theory, and of the mean-field electrodynamics that incorporates the effects of random waves and turbulence. Both dynamo theory and its counterpart, the theory of magnetic relaxation, are covered. Topological constraints associated with conservation of magnetic helicity are thoroughly explored and major challenges are addressed in areas such as fast-dynamo theory, accretion-disc dynamo theory and the theory of magnetostrophic turbulence. The book is aimed at graduate-level students in mathematics, physics, Earth sciences and astrophysics, and will be a valuable resource for researchers at all levels.

This book was released on 1996-10-16 with total page 1450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Petroleum engineering now has its own true classic handbook that reflects the profession's status as a mature major engineering discipline. Formerly titled the Practical Petroleum Engineer's Handbook, by Joseph Zaba and W.T. Doherty (editors), this new, completely updated two-volume set is expanded and revised to give petroleum engineers a comprehensive source of industry standards and engineering practices. It is packed with the key, practical information and data that petroleum engineers rely upon daily. The result of a fifteen-year effort, this handbook covers the gamut of oil and gas engineering topics to provide a reliable source of engineering and reference information for analyzing and solving problems. It also reflects the growing role of natural gas in industrial development by integrating natural gas topics throughout both volumes. More than a dozen leading industry experts-academia and industry-contributed to this two-volume set to provide the best , most comprehensive source of petroleum engineering information available.
Book Synopsis Treatise on Geophysics, Volume 8 by : Peter L. Olson
Download or read book Treatise on Geophysics, Volume 8 written by Peter L. Olson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-05-18 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treaties on Geophysics: Core Dynamics, Volume 8, provides a comprehensive review of the current state of understanding of core dynamics. The book begins by analyzing a subject of long-standing and on-going controversy: the gross energetics of the core. It then explains the important elements of dynamo theory; actual fluid motions in the core; the basic physical principles involved in thermochemical convection in the core and the basic equations governing the convection; and turbulence and the small-scale dynamics of the core. This is followed by discussions of the state of knowledge on rotation-induced core flows; the use of first-principles numerical models of self-sustaining fluid dynamos; and the behavior of polarity reversals in numerical dynamo models. The remaining chapters cover the various roles the inner core plays in core dynamics and the geodynamo; experiments that have shaped knowledge about the flows in the core that produce the geodynamo and govern its evolution; and ways the mantle can affect core dynamics, and corresponding ways the core can affect the mantle. - Self-contained volume starts with an overview of the subject then explores each topic with in depth detail - Extensive reference lists and cross references with other volumes to facilitate further research - Full-color figures and tables support the text and aid in understanding - Content suited for both the expert and non-expert

Book excerpt: New developments for hydrodynamical dynamo theory have been spurred by recent evidence of self-sustained dynamo activity in laboratory experiments with liquid metals. The emphasis in the present volume is on the introduction of powerful mathematical techniques required to tackle modern multiscale analysis of continous systems and there application to a number of realistic model geometries of increasing complexity. This introductory and self-contained research monograph summarizes the theoretical state-of-the-art to which the author has made pioneering contributions.
