Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical and empirical perspectives on the fragmentation of production processes across borders, shedding light on global sourcing decisions and their economic effects. Recent decades have seen a fragmentation of production processes across borders, as firms find it increasingly profitable to organize production on a global scale. This fragmentation occurs across national borders as well as across firm boundaries; companies must decide not only the location of production but also how much control to exert over the different production stages. Economists have responded to this shift by developing new models of global sourcing, generating important insights into the driving forces and economic effects of this new form of globalization. Many questions, however, remain unanswered. This book tries to fill this gap. The contributors ask new questions or offer new modeling approaches to fragmentation of production, focusing in particular on time and uncertainty. They examine global sourcing in firms' multinationalization strategies, including offshoring, product scope, managerial incentives, supplier search, and contractual issues; and explore the interactions of global sourcing, exports, and economic development, investigating such topics as the complementarity of offshoring and exporting, product diversification, and the relationship between vertical linkages and development. Each chapter presents recent research that further develops existing models or documents new empirical patterns related to global sourcing. Contributors Pol Antràs, Sasan Bakhtiari, Sebastian Benz, Giuseppe Berlingieri, Johannes Boehm, Jeronimo Carballo, Huiya Chen, Alejandro Cuñat, Fabrice Defever, Swati Dhingra, Harald Fadinger, Ana P. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global sourcing is a complex area, and one that managers must get to grips with as business investment in outsourcing continues to climb. This book provides invaluable guidance for the reader, walking them through the fundamentals of global sourcing to very recent trends, including intelligent automation, cloud services and crowdsourcing. Replete with key examples and cases, it allows students and managers alike to relate academic theory to practice, acting as a roadmap to a rapidly evolving field. For the last decade, the authors have studied the full spectrum of activities involved in global sourcing from both client, supplier and advisory viewpoints. Their research has shown that while more firms engage in global sourcing activities, many of them are still struggling to extract value from sourcing relationships. While past research has produced numerous practical frameworks regarding the management of global sourcing of services, little of this insight has been put into practice. This book addresses such shortcomings by exploring the impact of theory on practice. It is important reading for any academic, student or practitioner concerned with global sourcing either from the client or supplier perspective.

This book was released on 2016-07-28 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To date, the way in which software is developed has undergone considerable changes. It is well known that successful software development projects require diverse team members with specialized knowledge pools to leverage each other’s knowledge, solve problems and produce ideas collaboratively to accomplish software development tasks. While these specialized pools of knowledge are essential for software development, they create knowledge boundaries which impede cross-border communication and collaboration. Addressing such knowledge boundaries is particularly difficult when clients outsource software development projects to external vendors in offshore regions. The knowledge asymmetries between client and vendor employees are often extreme and they are geographically distributed. The three research papers included in this book provide a better understanding of how and why knowledge boundaries can be bridged and how co-created ideas can be generated over time. The implications for successful software development projects in offshore settings are highly relevant for theory and practice.
