There were in New Netherland both Dutch and English settlements; the schools of the former only are included in the study. For a long time after the English took over the colony, the Dutch clung to their language and customs. The effort herein made is to trace the history of these Dutch schools, beginning with their first transplanting from the United Netherlands and continuing down to the American Revolution, by which time the Dutch population was in large measure merged in the common American stock.
