Book excerpt: Set in the early 1800s, just prior to and during the war of 1812, a young woman (Rebecca Layton) living in Charleston, South Carolina, has just discovered that she's betrothed to an English duke (Harold Blackstone). She doesn't want to get married, so when the duke sends her a letter requesting her presence for the nuptials, she responds with a letter of her own informing him that the wedding is off. Harold doesn't really want to marry her either, but is compelled by his grandmother to do so. It is an ultimatum--either he marries Rebecca, or upon his grandmother's death Rebecca will inherit everything and he will be penniless. So he and his bachelor friend from college sail across the ocean to "simply take her" home to England. They discover that it's not so easy when she proves to be a very headstrong, independent woman. However, her three "brothers" (lifelong close male friends) believe she can be happy with Harold and hatch a plan to help Harold "kidnap" her and take her aboard his ship to England. The "brothers" go, of course, as bodyguards to their dear friend. Once aboard the ship, the would-be lovers have problems. Rebecca wants to get to know Harold better and learn the details of what's expected of her as Harold's wife: in particular, the making of babies. Harold would be happy to show her, but every time they get together, Rebecca's "brothers" step in and prevent it. Plus, Harold doesn't want to ruin his grandmother's plans for an elaborate church wedding by compromising her. That is, until one night when Harold gets drunk and finds Rebecca playing cards with her male friends. He gets angry, steals a gun and threatens the "brothers" and his friend, taking Rebecca into his cabin. But instead of compromising her as he intended, he vomits and passes out. After many misunderstandings, mishaps and misadventures, the two finally realize they love each other and are ready for a happily ever after.

Book excerpt: The Archbishop of Canterbury called him 'bloody rude', courtiers feared he was 'a foreign interloper out for the goodies', daughter-in-law Sarah Ferguson found him 'very frightening' and the Queen Mother labelled him 'the Hun'. Journalists have continually portrayed him as a gaffe-prone serial philanderer, with European outlets going way off-piste and claiming he has fathered 24 illegitimate children. Prince Philip says 'the impression the public has got is unfair', though there is no self-serving autobiography and his interviews with broadcasters or writers are done grudgingly. The Duke sets out to explore the man behind the various myths, drawing on interviews with relations, friends and courtiers and the Duke's own words. It brings to life some rare aspects of his character, from a love of poetry and religion to his fondness for Duke Ellington and his fascination with UFOs. It also explains why for over seven decades he has been the Queen's 'strength and stay' – and why he is regarded by many as a national treasure.

Book excerpt: A woman accidentally kidnaps a duke in this fabulous Regency romp that Bridgerton author Julia Quinn hails as a "delight." Chloe Wynchester is completely forgettable—a curse that gives her the ability to blend into any crowd. When the only father she's ever known makes a dying wish for his adopted family of orphans to recover a missing painting, she's the first one her siblings turn to for stealing it back. No one expects that in doing so, she'll also abduct a handsome duke. Lawrence Gosling, the Duke of Faircliffe, is tortured by his father's mistakes. To repair his estate's ruined reputation, he must wed a highborn heiress. Yet when he finds himself in a carriage being driven hell-for-leather down the cobblestone streets of London by a beautiful woman who refuses to heed his commands, he fears his heart is hers. But how can he sacrifice his family's legacy to follow true love? "Erica Ridley's love stories are warm, witty and irresistible. I want to be a Wynchester!" —Eloisa James Publishers Weekly Best Books of 2021

Book excerpt: Vicious battles, powerful monarchs, and royal intrigue abound in this “gripping, complex, and sensational” (Hilary Mantel) true story of the War of the Roses—a struggle among three brothers, two of whom became kings, and the inspiration for Shakespeare’s renowned play, Richard III. In 15th-century England, two royal families, the House of York and the House of Lancaster, fought a bitter, decades-long civil war for the English throne. As their symbols were a red rose for Lancaster and a white rose for York, the conflict became known as the Wars of the Roses. During this time, the house of York came to dominate England. At its heart were three charismatic brothers—King Edward IV, and his two younger siblings George and Richard—who became the figureheads of a spectacular ruling dynasty. Together, they looked invincible. But with Edward’s ascendancy the brothers began to turn on one another, unleashing a catastrophic chain of rebellion, vendetta, fratricide, usurpation, and regicide. The brutal end came at Bosworth Field in 1485, with the death of the youngest, then Richard III, at the hands of a new usurper, Henry Tudor, later Henry VII, progenitor of the Tudor line of monarchs. Fascinating, dramatic, and filled with vivid historical detail, The Brothers York is a brilliant account of a conflict that fractured England for a generation. Riven by internal rivalries, jealousy, and infighting, the three York brothers failed to sustain their power and instead self-destructed. It is a rich and bloody tale as gripping as any historical fiction.

Just Beyond Tomorrow With his father dead and his mother in France, Patrick Leslie, Duke of Glenkirk, discovers the obligations of the estate and its people are now his alone. But during a day of hunting, a chance meeting ensures that he will not be alone much longer, for to obtain the deserted castle and lands adjoining his, Patrick must agree to take something else, as well--a bride. Flanna Brodie, heiress to Brae, is as vibrant and beautiful as the Scottish countryside, and just as wild. She wants no man--only her freedom. But the passions Patrick awakens in her run deeper than those of the flesh. The independent Flanna is determined to champion the royal Stuarts' cause, and restore Charles II to his throne despite her husband's objections. Patrick knows the dangers of such political intrigues; that the Stuarts have always brought misfortune to the Leslies of Glenkirk, and that a roguish king will ask far more of the naïve duchess than a simple vow of fealty--forcing Patrick and Flanna to choose between the threat of wounded pride, and the promise of a lasting love both secretly yearn for. . .

Book excerpt: Miss Lydia Hamilton is desperate. She needs to secure a marriage to a wealthy gentleman, and she needs to do it fast. Enlisting the help of two brothers, she kidnaps the unwitting Lord Quinton. Under ordinary circumstances, she would never force a gentleman to marry her, but these aren't ordinary circumstances. Her family needs money. And fast. Guy Milton, the Earl of Quinton, is not happy. It's extremely bad luck to be kidnapped, especially in the middle of the night while he is supposed to be sound asleep in his bed. Now doom is imminent. His kidnappers are going to kill him. He just knows it. But instead of killing him, he is forced to marry Lydia. While one would think this would come as a welcome relief, such isn't the case. Marriage under force at midnight to a lady with two redheaded brothers means bad luck. To make matters worse, after the wedding, they hurry him off to a country estate full of so much bad luck that he's sure this is where he'll die. When Lydia decided to kidnap Lord Quinton, she thought her biggest problem would be convincing him to get her with child. She didn't think she'd have to convince him that he'll live long enough to survive the task. This is a romantic comedy with a superstitious hero, a heroine who needs money, and an estate with a classic gothic feel to it.
