Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work studies two medieval translations of Aesop's fables, one in Latin (1497) and one in vernacular Italian (1526), with a close examination of how each translation reflected its audience and its translator. It offers close readings of the "Feast of Tongues" along with six fables common to both texts: "The House Mouse and the Field Mouse," "The Lion and the Mouse," "The Nightingale and the Sparrow Hawk," "The Wolf and the Lamb," "The Fly and the Ant," and "The Donkey and the Lap-Dog." The selected fables highlight imbalances of power, different stations in life, and the central question of "how shall we live?"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State tests are assessing reading and writing together—Are you ready? I wish students would interact with a text on their own...I wish it wasn’t like pulling teeth to get them to elaborate their thinking. Wish no more, because bestselling author Gretchen Bernabei shows you how to guide students to be nimble at both short answer and extended responses. Her secret? "Teach students text structures, and they can pour their swirling ideas about the text into cogent writing." Using the accessible format of fables, Bernabei and Hover share lessons and an appendix full of fables so you can teach students five concrete ways to respond to text in any genre: Generate basic responses, using structures that support clarity Craft fiction inspired by the text to unveil literary knowledge and imaginative response Write essays about a theme or moral that display empathic and evidence-based interpretation Answer open-ended questions by selecting a technique that reflects the text and their engagement Use non-traditional formats like graphics and spoken dialogue to showcase their learning The heat is on—beginning in third grade, state tests are now assessing reading and writing together. And that’s a good thing, but we’ve got some catching up to do. With Text Structures and Fables in hand, your students will swiftly and surely become text-savvy readers and writers.

Book Synopsis Minding Animals in the Old and New Worlds by : Steven Wagschal
Download or read book Minding Animals in the Old and New Worlds written by Steven Wagschal and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2018-11-05 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minding Animals in the Old and New Worlds employs current research in cognitive science and the philosophy of animal cognition to explore how humans have understood non-human animals in the Iberian world, from the Middle Ages through the early modern period. Using texts from European and Indigenously-informed sources, Steven Wagschal argues that people tend to conceptualize the minds of animals in ways that reflect their own uses for the animal, the manner in which they interact with the animal, and the place in which the animal lives. Often this has little if anything to do with the actual cognitive abilities of the animal. However, occasionally early authors made surprisingly accurate assumptions about the thoughts and feelings of animals. Wagschal explores a number of ways in which culture and human cognition interact, including: the utility of anthropomorphism; the symbolic use of animals in medieval Christian texts; attempts at understanding the minds of animals in Spain’s early modern farming and hunting books; the effect of novelty on animal conceptualizations in "New World" histories, and how Cervantes navigated the forms of anthropomorphism that preceded him to create the first embodied animal minds in fiction.
