Any one differs from St. Paul at his intellectual peril, and every one may imitate him with spiritual profit. One therefore compares together the dominant note of the Apostle and of the modern preacher with interest, and one observes with concern that the characteristic modern strikes a lower key. St. Paul carried himself as an ambassador, charged with a com mission by God and addressing subjects who had rebelled against their king; the preacher of to day is rather a barrister pleading his case with an impartial and critical jury from whom he hopes to win a favorable verdict on Jesus Christ. The Apostle believed that he had received from God, by the inspiration of the Holy Ghost, a divine message containing the terms of reconciliation and appealing to every man's conscience as a sinner; the modern has found in the religion of Jesus a reasonable discipline for the soul, and endeavors to convince his fellow-men of its excellent beauty. The Apostle was firmly con vinced that if any man Jew or Gentile, receivedm doctrines of grace. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Doctrine of Grace IT is very generally admitted that at the present day there is a widespread desire among Catholics for instruction regarding the truths of their religion. Those preachers are the most sought after whose sermons are known to convey positive teaching as to the faith while for the purely hortatory sermon, however good of its kind, there is little demand. Nor is this state of things confined to English-speaking peoples. Even in those countries in which the oratorical style was at one time regarded as essential to good preaching, the more homely instruction seems to be now largely taking its place. The reason for this is not hard to see. There has never, perhaps, been a time when the Catholic religion was more canvassed and discussed than at the present day. Men see that it alone has held its ground unshaken by the tremendous religious disintegration of the nineteenth century; that the crisis which seemed to threaten all belief in religion has. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of the Sacraments: In Relation to the Doctrines of Grace, as Contained in the Scriptures, Taught in Our, Formularies, and Upheld by Our Reformers The following Paper has a very unpretending aim. Originally written with a view to being read at a meeting of Brother Presbyters, it grew in the writer's hands till it exceeded reasonable limits. Then, yielding to the wishes of those who desired its publication, the writer was unwilling to send it forth without some additional notes, to support the positions which seemed most likely to be called in question. Nor does he regret that thus he has been led to swell the bulk of the Paper by numerous quotations from the writings of the Reformers, and of Divines who followed in the steps of the Reformers. Rather, he will rejoice if thus he may have con tributed anything towards setting in a clearer light the real debt we owe to our Divines of the Sixteenth Century. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no question that we live in an age of weak theology and casual Christianity. We have substituted intuition for truth, feeling for belief and immediate gratification for enduring hope. Evangelicalism desperately needs to return to the doctrines that once before reformed the world: radical depravity, unconditional election, particular redemption, efficacious grace and persevering grace. James Boice and Philip Ryken not only provide a compelling exposition on these doctrines of grace, but also look briefly at their historical impact. The authors leave no doubt that the church suffers when these foundational truths are neglected and that she must return to a Christianity that is practical-minded, kind-hearted, and most importantly, biblically based.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of Grace in the Synoptic Gospels Lake, in his recent book,1 has reasoned to the same con elusion, namely that our Lord's eschatological hope was an illusion. He maintains that Jesus fitted His full message into the apocalyptic categories of His age.2 Lake is quite explicit concerning the outcome of his views: we cannot find our Saviour, he says, in one who conditioned his teaching by Jewish apocalypticism, and believed in what was, after all, an illusory expectation of the coming of the King dom of God. 3 The presuppositions of these thoroughgoing eschatologists have led us to a fuller investigation of the Doctrine of Grace in Jewish apocalyptic literature than might otherwise have seemed desirable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Debt and Grace: As Related to the Doctrine of a Future Life With respect to our lost condition, the Psalmist might, then, Well ask: What is man, that Thou art mindful of him? Or the son of man, that Thou visitest him? The answer seems hardly to agree with the fact. Thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honor. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands. Thou hast put all things under his feet. The passage can only be explained as a prophecy of Christ. This is required by the true sense of one important word, and is so understood by the writer of the Epistle to the Hebrews. As if he had said: Thou hast reduced him (the Son of Man) to be lower than the angels, i and him hast thou crowned with glory and honor. He is born king of the Jews; he is King over all. Under his in him, under the feet of Mankind, dost thou put all things. The subjection is not yet complete; but we see the One who was made a little lower than the angels, even Jesus, crowned, for his suffering of death, with glory and honor, that, as a free gift of God, he might taste death for all men. It is the right of those who receive him to become the sons of God. He is the Captain of their salvation, leading them on to their proper dignity and final glory; sharing their nature that he might call them brethren; destroying him that had the power of death, the fear of which was a life-long bondage triumphing over the grave, that he might Show them the path of life; and opening the gates of the Heavenly City to all who should prove worthy of its citizenship, and its crown of righteousness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reign of Grace, From Its Rise to Its Consummation Truly divine, has ever been the object of the world's contempt. It was of old a flumblingblock to the felfrighteous Jew, and fooliflmefs to the phi lofophic Greek. Paul, who was a refolute afiertor of the honours of grace, and indefatigable in preach ing Chrifl, found it fo by repeated experience and that, not only among the illiterate and profane, but alfo among the learned and the devout. Nay, he had frequent occafion to obferve, that the religious devotees of his age were the firfi in oppoling th doctrine he preached, and the mofi hardened ene mies againft the truth of God. The polite, the learned, the religious, were all agreed, to load both his character and his doctrine with the foulefl te proaches. Nor was this treatment peculiar to Paul, but common to all his cotemporaries, who efpoufed the fame glorious caufe, and laboured in the fame beneficent work. The doctrine they preached was charged with licentioufnefs. Their enemies boldly affirmed that-they (aid; Let u: do evil that good may. Others 'have explained the doctrine more fullv have set forth its beauties more eloquently, and have exhorted to its attain ment more persuasively than I Shall be able to do. These writers have stated the doctrine as a second work, but I have thought there was a fail ure to state fully why they believed it to be such. I too may fail, but for this end I write. That these humble pages will be criticised, I have no doubt, that many will reject the ideas advanced is equally apparent; but that some hearts may be led by the perusal of these lines into the exper ience Of perfect love and perfect rest is the prayer Of my heart. Torrance aims in this book to discover how and why there came about in the early history of the Christian Church the enormous difference that exists between the faith of the New Testament and that of the second and third centuries. He explores how the concept of grace is distinctively characteristic of every doctrine of the New Testament, and yet at the same time is the most sensitive to change.
