Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of the Manifestations of the Son of God Under the Economy of the Old Testament The volume now in the hands of the reader is a posthumous publication as its title page will have informed him. The subject of which it treats had engaged the earnest attention of the Author for a period of from twenty to thirty years, the greater portion of his public life; and the composition of the volume was only finished a few weeks before his decease. He had expended upon it, in fact, his last cares and left it in a state of singular completeness, so that upon the Editor devolved only the easy task of revising a few sheets as they came from the press. That the closing sheets alone were subjected to his revision is explained by the circumstance that the author printed the work piecemeal as each sheet was written, and had thus the greater portion of the work in its permanent form in his possession a considerable time prior to his death. The process will be fully explained in his own preface, which will be found pre fixed to the treatise itself. It isa matter for congratulation that the work thus enjoys the benefit of the author's very accurate revision as it passed through the press, together with his fastidiously minute system of reference and annotation. Book excerpt: An instant classic, Modern Paladin (a holy warrior for todays world) combines the best of Bible commentary and church-leader discipleship. This work is as comprehensive and detailed as any program for leadership development could be. It begins with the discovery that the ancient city of Ephesus is the only church location to receive both an epistle from Paul and a letter in Revelations. This city and church are proven to be perfect representatives of the modern church and a line-by-line analysis of Ephesians uncovers over a hundred bullet-point lessons for modern church leaders. This in-depth commentary then evolves into an actual system, the modern paladin system, wherein a reader can analyze themselves, their small groups, and even whole churches, with an eye toward the biblical lessons of leadership. Absolutely required reading for any church leader that wants to improve or any scholar or student that wants to know more about Ephesians or what the Bible has to say about leadership. Dive in and discover how you can strengthen yourself, your small groups, and your church, striving through the Word of God to become a modern paladin!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fourth annual volume of the remarkably popular journal of biblical theology edited by Scott Hahn and his St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology. This volume features important new works by Hahn, Gary Anderson, John Cavadini, Brant Pitre, among others. Inspired by the ground-breaking work of Yves Congar and Jean Danielou, this volume includes original and thought-provoking contributions on such topics as: the Tabernacle and the origins of Christian mysticism; Jesus self-consciousness of being the new Temple and the new High Priest; and the doctrine of the indwelling of the Trinity in the soul; Hahn contributes a new perspective on the Gospel of John, showing how Israel's Temple and feasts are fulfilled in Christ and the sacraments of the Church. As the editors write in their introduction to this volume: The Temple theme is perhaps the richest in all of biblical theology, embracing the mysteries of Christ, Church, and Kingdom; liturgy, sacraments, and priesthood; salvation, sanctification, and divine filiation. These are the beautiful mysteries we contemplate in this volume of Letter & Spirit.

We have completed volume 6-9 which are the New Testament. Lord willing in 2023, we will try to complete volume 1-5 which is the Old Testament. This volume was published between 1867-1874 In contrast to the extreme skeptical-critical mode which came to characterize much of German scholarship in the 19th century, Lange represented a more traditional-conservative (and Evanglical) approach, shared in common with men such as E. W. Hengstenberg. He was also a (Reformed) minister, and the Commentaries reflect this combination of conservative criticism, Evangelical theology, and homiletics, in a way that is unique. For each passage that is covered, a consistent approach is adopted throughout. After giving the text in translation, along with textual notes, (as footnotes), three different kinds of commentary are presented: · EXEGETICAL AND CRITICAL · DOCTRINAL AND ETHICAL · HOMILETICAL AND PRACTICAL This gives you three times the value! For each verse you select, a drop-down box will appear allowing you to choose from each of these areas or kinds of commentary. For detailed analysis, go to the exegetical-critical notes; for sermon ideas and pastoral insights, select the Homiletical notes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1668, the famous Puritan John Owen began publishing his magnum opus. Twenty-two years in the making, this first volume contained twenty-four "exercitations," preliminary practices to help the reader understand what is coming in his magisterial study of the book of Hebrews. The tenth of these was titled, "Appearances of the Son of God Under the Old Testament." It contains a precious discussion on Christ, especially as he appears as the Angel of the LORD, an actual person and character who appears time and again from Genesis to Malachi. This long-neglected treatise is a necessary back-bone holding up the perhaps longer-neglected and often misunderstood larger body of evidence demonstrating that the Second Person of the Trinity is literally present and known to the saints of the era prior to the incarnation. Anyone finding themselves desiring to learn more about this topic from one of the most respected of all the Puritans would do well to master the contents of this little book. We have also added dozens of quotations from Church Fathers and Reformers down to the present day showing the orthodoxy of the often denied doctrine that Christ was not merely typed and prophesied in the Old Testament, he was actually present in his person.
