This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Doctrine of the Atonement This brief history of the doctrine of the Atonement is an attempt to fill a gap in a literature already voluminous. It is the outcome of a series of lectures given to theological students, in the course of which I found the difficulty of referring my pupils to any book which made the sources accessible in a systematic manner. I have tried to meet this need by using quotation as far as possible, and by giving the zlosissima verba of the original Greek or Latin in footnotes throughout. The quotations are usually taken from current translations, but I have sometimes made my own version. There is no pretence at completeness, which would demand a far larger treatise, but it is hoped that no considerable development has been ignored, and that sufficient comment has been introduced to make the history both readable and consecutive. Book Synopsis Atonement, Law, and Justice by : Adonis Vidu
Download or read book Atonement, Law, and Justice written by Adonis Vidu and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2014-08-12 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adonis Vidu tackles an issue of great current debate in evangelical circles and of perennial interest in the Christian academy. He provides a critical reading of the history of major atonement theories, offering an in-depth analysis of the legal and political contexts within which they arose. The book engages the latest work in atonement theory and serves as a helpful resource for contemporary discussions. This is the only book that explores the impact of theories of law and justice on major historical atonement theories. Understanding this relationship yields a better understanding of atonement thinkers by situating them in their intellectual contexts. The book also explores the relevance of the doctrine of divine simplicity for atonement theory.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Atonement Tms object of the Oxford Library of Practical Theology is to supply some carefully considered teaching on matters of Religion to that large body of devout laymen, who desire instruction, but are not attracted by the learned treatises which appeal to the theologian. One of the needs of the time would seem to be, to trans late the solid theological learning, of which there is no lack, into the vernacular of everyday practical religion and while steering a course between what is called plain teaching on the one hand and erudition on the other, to supply some sound and readable instruction to those who require it, on the subjects included under the common title The Christian Religion, ' that they may be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh them a reason of the hope that is in them, with meekness and fear. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Atonement and the Modern Mind From two sources. Either the mind is pre occupied with a conception of the world which, whether men are conscious of it or not, forecloses all the questions which are raised by any doctrine of atonement, and makes them unmeaning; or it labours under some misconception as to what the New Tes tament actually teaches. Broadly speaking, the first of these conditions is considered in the first two chapters, and the second in the last. The title Tko Atonement and tko Modern Mind - might seem to promise a treatise, or even an elaborate system of theol ogy; but though it would cover a work of vastly larger scope than the present, it is not inappropriate to'any attempt, however humble, to help the mind in which we all live and move to reach a sympathetic comprehension of the central truth in the Christian religion. The purpose of the writer is evangelic, what ever may be said oi his method; it is to. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Atonement in Modern Religious Thought: A Theological Symposium If, however, one looks upon the Christianity of to - day, it would appear as though the belief in redemption had lost its certitude. There are thousands who hold to monotheism and the ethics of Christianity who will hear nothing of redemption. To such the idea of it has no actuality; it is merely an historical conception, or, at best, a cause of passing emotion. To bring the idea of redemption into connection with the person of Christ appears to them an impossibility. They think that they can satisfy themselves with a Christianity without redemption and without Christ. For the same reason they also set aside the Church's conception of Christianity, in which redemption through Christ is the cardinal doctrine. There are various grounds for this attitude. Some say they'do not feel any necessity for redemp tion; others see in the doctrine something weak and feminine, at variance with serious.
