Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of Confirmation: Considered in Relation to Holy Baptism as a Sacramental Ordinance of the Catholic Church; With a Preliminary Historical Survey of the Doctrine of the Holy Spirit The second point to be considered is whether the new doctrine of the writer of the Article in the Church Quarterly, and of the modern Anglican authorities which he quotes, is of sufficient weight to cause its universal acceptance in place of the received teaching of the Catholic Church. It is not too much to say, that the reception of a doctrine so novel, and so seriously at variance with the usual interpretation of our Anglican formularies, requires Of us a belief in the con structive and formative powers of a few nine teenth-century writers on theology which is hardly warranted by facts. It would be strange if the Catholic doctrine of Confirmation had lain dor mant and undeveloped for nearly nineteen cen turies, and that it had been reserved to these writers to unfold it for the first time to an ex pectant Catholic Christendom. Book excerpt: This book documents the Episcopal Church's developing focus on baptism within the context of the liturgical movement, the emerging understanding of the eucharist, prayer book revision, and the confirmation dilemma. Drawing on historical and contemporary sources, the author presents a credible case in support of her belief that a baptismal ecclesiology is emerging from these events that have enabled people to accept a radically different initiatory pattern in the church. This book exhibits clarity on the issues discussed with the support of solid scholarship and lucid writing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on Anglican Confirmation in theology, liturgy, and practice from 1820 to 1945. This was a period of great change in the ways Anglicans approached Confirmation. The Tractarian movement transformed the Communion, and its ideas were carried overseas with the missionary movement. The study examines the development of a two-stage theology and its reception. It analyses the wave of liturgical revision expressed in England in the 1928 Prayer Book. It explores the episcopal changes in practice from the eighteenth-century paradigm to a new way of confirming. The revolution of the time has left a legacy that still informs practice, while doubts about theology and its liturgical application have left an existential crisis. The author reflects on how the current situation in various provinces has its roots in this period and the diffusion of ideas in the Communion. The book offers a fresh systematic examination of the neglected ecclesial practice of Confirmation, providing a more holistic view and clarifying developments to help us better understand the present. It will be of particular interest to scholars of Christian theology, liturgy, ecclesiology, and church history.
