Book Synopsis The Doctor Who Franchise by : Lynnette Porter
Download or read book The Doctor Who Franchise written by Lynnette Porter and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2012-09-18 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Doctor Who nears its 50th anniversary, it is very much a part of British popular culture, and the Doctor has become a British icon. Nevertheless, thanks to BBC America and BBC Worldwide's marketing strategy, as well as the Doctor's and his companions' recent in-person visits to the U.S., the venerable series is becoming more susceptible to an "American influence," including the possibility of becoming "Americanized." Doctor Who and recent spinoffs Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures offer American audiences very different insights into the Whoniverse and have met with varying degrees of success. Whereas Torchwood became a U.S.-U.K. co-production, The Sarah Jane Adventures was largely mismarketed. To complicate matters, the interrelationships that keep the Doctor Who franchise alive through radio dramas, audiobooks, comics, novels, etc., during hiatuses in television broadcasts, may give U.S. and U.K. audiences different understandings of the lead characters--the Doctor, Captain Jack Harkness, and Sarah Jane Smith. Although the past decade has been an exciting time in the Whoniverse, the Doctor--and the franchise--are poised for yet another regeneration.
Download or read book Head of Drama written by Sydney Newman and published by ECW Press. This book was released on 17-09-05 with total page 699 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The memoir of the creator of Doctor Who and a legend in British and Canadian TV and film A major influence on the BBC and independent television in Britain in the 1960s, as well as on CBC and the National Film Board in Canada, Sydney Newman acted as head of drama at a key period in the history of television. For the first time, his comprehensive memoirs Ñ written in the years before his death in 1997 Ñ are being made public. Born to a poor Jewish family in the tenements of Queen Street in Toronto, NewmanÕs artistic talent got him a job at the NFB under John Grierson. He then became one of the first producers at CBC TV before heading overseas to the U.K. where he revitalized drama programming. Harold Pinter and Alun Owen were playwrights whom Newman nurtured, and their contemporary, socially conscious plays were successful, both artistically and commercially. At the BBC, overseeing a staff of 400, he developed a science fiction show that flourishes to this day: Doctor Who. Providing further context to NewmanÕs memoir is an in-depth biographical essay by Graeme Burk, which positions NewmanÕs legacy in the history of television, and an afterword by one of SydneyÕs daughters, Deirdre Newman.

Book Synopsis Who Makes the Franchise? by : Rhonda Knight
Download or read book Who Makes the Franchise? written by Rhonda Knight and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-10-28 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fans and the billion-dollar franchises in which they participate have together become powerful agents within popular culture. These franchises have launched avenues for fans to expand and influence the stories that they tell. This book examines those fan-driven narratives as "wilderness texts," in which fans use their platforms to create for themselves while also communicating their visions to the franchises, thus spurring innovation. The essays in this collection look at how fans intervene in the production of mass media. Scholars analyze the negotiations between fan desires for both novelty and familiarity that franchises must maintain in order to achieve critical and commercial success. Applying varying theoretical approaches to discussions of fan responses to franchises, including Star Wars, Marvel, Godzilla, Firefly, The Terminator, Star Trek, DC, and The Muppets, these essays provide insight into the ever-changing relationships between fandom and transmedia storytelling.
