Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1884 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XVIII. THE ANTAGONISM OF THE CHRIST-PRINCIPLE AND DISEASE, OK THE HEALING POWER OF JESUS. By the Christ-principle, or that by which Jesus became the Christ, I mean a spiritual intelligence. It is not science or knowledge on the plane of sense; it is not a knowledge imparted by instruction from without, and imported into the mind, but arises from within, -- the God-light in the soul, the living Word. Nor is it knowledge alone, a coldly luminous intellectual state, like moonbeams reflected from the snow fields on a winter's night, but it is an interior light that has in it the warmth of a Divine love. That Jesus, after the age of thirty years, exhibited a marvelous power of healing the sick without medicine, and which so far surpassed the power of his contemporaries as to be deemed miraculous, is a well-established fact, and as well certified as the principal facts in the life of Alexander or Caesar. It is not improbable in itself; and many marvelous cures have been effected in every subsequent age, and even in the century in which we live, that render it entirely credible. On this subject I cannot do better than to use the language of Dr. Hase, with some additions of my own. These so-called miracles cannot contradict the laws of the world, which are the constant expression of the Divine will, and the established Divine order. Therefore, amid all apparent contradictions, we must seek for an accordance with law. According to the Gospel narratives, his acts of healing were not always unconnected with bodily contact, the imposition of the hands or other outward means. (Mark vii: 33; viii: 23. John ix: C. Mat. viii: 16; xvii:21.) In this way they may have some relation to Rabbinical or Essene methods of cure, and in some measure..

Book excerpt: Warren Felt Evans (1817-1889) was an American author famous for his writings related to the New Thought movement, a movement originating from 19th century United States based upon the ideas that God exists everywhere, sickness originates in the mind, and that thinking "correctly" has the ability to heal. He became a proponent of the movement during 1863 as a result of seeking healing from Phineas P. Quimby, the movement's founder. In "The Divine Law of Cure", Evans attempts to construct a theoretical and practical system of phrenopathy (mental-cure), with reference to famous philosophers including Berkeley, Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel. This vintage book will appeal to those with an interest in New Thought, and it would make for a worthy addition to collections of related literature. Contents include: "The Essential Idea of Christianity as Unfolded in the Johnnean Gospel", "The Presence of God in Material World and in the Realm of Mind", "Saving and Healing Grace, of Medicine a Sacrament", "Origin and Conservation of Life-Force", "The Scriptural Idea of Health and Disease", "The Birth of the Christ in Illustrating the General Law of Conception, and the Vital Relation of Man to God", etc. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with an essay by William Al-Sharif.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laws of the Divine Healing These two forms of special divine healing will probably remain permanent in the church of the future, for the violation of hygiene laws, the accidental breaking of bones, the infliction of accidental wounds, and the weakness of life force in infancy and old age will continue into the New Age, and never cease; and will always call for more or less of divine special healing by prayer and faith. I believe that all necessary discoveries for the practice of these two forms of special healing are in the following pages practically perfected, and cannot be essentially improved, and will be used all through the ages of ages on which we are now entering. Book excerpt: "The design of The Mental Cure is to explain the nature and laws of the inner life of man, and to contribute some light on the subject of Mental Hygiene, which is beginning to assume importance in the treatment of disease, and to attract the attention of physiologists. "We have aimed to illustrate the correspondence of the soul and body, their mutual action and reaction, and to demonstrate the causal relation of disordered mental states to diseased physiological action, and the importance and mode of regulating the intellectual and affectional nature of the invalid under any system of medical treatment." Phineas P. Quimby may be regarded as the founder of the New Thought Movement as well of the Metaphysical Movement in America. Credit for the spread of his ideas however, goes to four others. These were four sick people who sought healing at his hands: Annetta G. Seabury, Julius A. Dresser, Mary Baker Glover Patterson (later Mary Baker Eddy), and Warren Felt Evans. W.F Evans not only healed but he wrote a great deal. His great distinction lies in the fact that he was the first to write of the new healing and its basis as taught and practiced by Quimby. The Mental Cure, (Illustrating the Influence of the Mind on the Body, Both in Health and Disease, and the Psychological Method of Treatment, ) was Evens first book followed by Mental Medicine, Soul and Body, The Divine Law of Cure, The Primitive Mind Cure and Esoteric Christianity and Mental Therapeutics.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Primitive Mind-Cure: The Nature and Power of Faith This volume is designed to contribute something toward supplying the demand in the public for further light on the subject upon which it treats, - the cure of disease in ourselves and others mental and spiritual agencies. The first work of the author having a relation to the subject, was published over twenty-two years ago. It was followed, at intervals of different length, by four other volumes, which have had an extensive circulation in every part of the country, and to some extent in Europe. It is not an incredible supposition that they have had an influence, more or less, towards generating in the public mind the widely-spread and growing belief of the mental origin of disease, and of the relation of the mind to its cure. The work is intended to take the reader up where the last volume of the author, "The Divine Law of Cure," leaves him, and conduct him still further along the same path of inquiry. It does not claim to have exhausted the subject, or to have said all that might be said; for the subject is one too vast to be crowded into so limited a compass, which would be like condensing the ocean into the dimensions of a lake. THIS volume is designed to contribute something toward supplying the demand in the public for further light on the subject upon which it treats, -the cure of disease in ourselves and others by mental and spiritual agencies. The work is intended to take the reader up where the last volume of the author, ''The Divine Law of Cure," leaves him, and conduct him still further along the same path of inquiry. It does not claim to have exhausted the subject, or to have said all that might be said; for the subject is one too vast to be crowded into so limited a compass, which would be like condensing the ocean into the dimensions of a lake. But it is to be hoped that enough has been said to vindicate the propriety of the title, -that of "Elementary Lessons in Christian Philosophy and Transcendental Medicine." It was our aim to furnish the teachers and pupils of the spiritual philosophy of healing, with a text-book which should elevate the subject into the dignity of a science....
