Book Synopsis Real Presence by : Timothy P. O'Malley
Download or read book Real Presence written by Timothy P. O'Malley and published by Ave Maria Press. This book was released on 2021-03-12 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of a first-place award for popular presentation of the faith and second-place in pastoral ministry, catechetical resource from the Catholic Media Association. Many Catholics don’t believe that Jesus is really present in the Eucharist. Rather, they see the bread and wine of Holy Communion as mere symbols of Christ’s body and blood. Is that disbelief just a misunderstanding or is it a blatant rejection of one of the central beliefs of the faith? In Real Presence, University of Notre Dame theologian Timothy P. O’Malley clears up the confusion and shows you how to learn to love God and neighbor through a deeper understanding of the doctrine of real presence. A 2019 study by the Pew Research Center found that almost seventy percent of Catholics don’t believe that Jesus is really present in the Eucharist. O’Malley offers a concise introduction to Catholic teaching on real presence and transubstantiation through a biblical, theological, and spiritual account of these doctrines from the early Church to today. He also explores how real presence enables us to see the vulnerability of human life and the dignity of all flesh and blood. O’Malley leads you to a deeper understanding and renewed faith in Catholic teaching about transubstantiation and real presence by helping you learn how the doctrine of real presence is rooted in divine revelation and how the Church’s teaching regarding transubstantiation is spiritually fruitful for the believer today; how to make your own the doctrine of real presence by worshipping Christ in the Eucharist and therefore making a real assent to real presence; how the Eucharist, although not the exclusive presence of Christ in the Church’s liturgy and mission, is crucial in growing our capacity for recognizing those other presences; and the important relationship between Eucharistic communion and adoration.

Book Synopsis By Man Shall His Blood Be Shed by : Edward Feser
Download or read book By Man Shall His Blood Be Shed written by Edward Feser and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2017-05-10 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Catholic Church has in recent decades been associated with political efforts to eliminate the death penalty. It was not always so. This timely work reviews and explains the Catholic Tradition regarding the death penalty, demonstrating that it is not inherently evil and that it can be reserved as a just form of punishment in certain cases. Drawing upon a wealth of philosophical, scriptural, theological, and social scientific arguments, the authors explain the perennial teaching of the Church that capital punishment can in principle be legitimate—not only to protect society from immediate physical danger, but also to administer retributive justice and to deter capital crimes. The authors also show how some recent statements of Church leaders in opposition to the death penalty are prudential judgments rather than dogma. They reaffirm that Catholics may, in good conscience, disagree about the application of the death penalty. Some arguments against the death penalty falsely suggest that there has been a rupture in the Church's traditional teaching and thereby inadvertently cast doubt on the reliability of the Magisterium. Yet, as the authors demonstrate, the Church's traditional teaching is a safeguard to society, because the just use of the death penalty can be used to protect the lives of the innocent, inculcate a horror of murder, and affirm the dignity of human beings as free and rational creatures who must be held responsible for their actions. By Man Shall His Blood Be Shed challenges contemporary Catholics to engage with Scripture, Tradition, natural law, and the actual social scientific evidence in order to undertake a thoughtful analysis of the current debate about the death penalty.
Book Synopsis Financial Management for Episcopal Parishes by : James B. Jordan
Download or read book Financial Management for Episcopal Parishes written by James B. Jordan and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2017-07-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed to help parishes of all sizes establish good financial management processes and policies. Experience shows that open and transparent churches engender a greater feeling of trust and willingness on the part of the donor. The policies and processes in Financial Management for Episcopal Parishes, which can be implemented by any size church, allow clergy, vestry, and parishioners to establish and document procedures that enable a financially transparent organization. The book defines the roles of the clergy, staff, vestry, and congregation and outlines what needs to be done by them to design and implement a system of checks and balances for financial oversight and stewardship, in order to protect donations and assets. Throughout the book, real-life examples of processes and procedures that did not work (and why) make for enjoyable reading of an otherwise business-like subject. Every reader will recognize some of them in their own church life.

Book Synopsis Liturgical Living Weekly Meal Planner by : Kendra Tierney
Download or read book Liturgical Living Weekly Meal Planner written by Kendra Tierney and published by . This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A year-long weekly meal planner based on the Catholic liturgical calendar and the liturgical living recommendations in the Catholic All Year Compendium, sure to make you a perfectly pious and oh-so organized cook. Or . . . maybe not. But this planner has been mindfully designed for busy moms and everyone who wants to focus a bit more on learning about the lives of the saints, the history and traditions of the Church, and bringing the people we love together around the table. The planner pages are undated. That means having a frozen pizza and leftovers week or going out of town doesn't mean "wasting" dated pages. Fill out the weeks as you go. Skip when you want to. Zero judgement from the planner. In the back you'll find all the feast days on the universal liturgical calendar, plus all the saints' days mentioned in the Catholic All Year Compendium. They are listed with a bit of information to inspire your meal planning-like a country or foods with which the saint or day is associated. Also included are lines to jot down your family members' three special days (birthday, nameday, and baptismal anniversary) and any other important recipes, holy days, holidays, and anniversaries you want to remember when meal planning. Write the month and dates of the upcoming week at the top of the page. Circle the liturgical season to get you in the mood. Then consult the lists in the back of the planner or on your Catholic All Year liturgical wall calendar to see if there are feast days you want to celebrate during the week or days of fasting or abstinence to remember and note them next to the day of the week. Decide on meals. Write them down. Fill out the shopping list. Tear it off when you're ready to head to the store. Easy peasy!

Book Synopsis Franciscan Virtues Through the Year by : Confraternity of Penitents
Download or read book Franciscan Virtues Through the Year written by Confraternity of Penitents and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-04-02 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conform your life to the teachings of Jesus by living the virtues taught by Christ and especially embraced by Saint Francis of Assisi. Franciscan Virtues Through the Year: 52 Steps to Conversion from Saint Francis of Assisi explores each virtue with a quote from Scripture, a quote from the writings of Saint Francis, and an incident from the life of Saint Francis. There follows a reflection on the virtue, then meditation and prayer on the virtue, and some delving back into Scripture regarding it. Each virtue calls for reflection on the virtue and practice of it for an entire week. If the reflections and practice are done weekly as suggested, the reader will be spiritually more in tune with God's ways at the end of reading the book than at the beginning. The book is designed to make one aware of the virtues which St. Francis especially loved and to help the reader implement those virtues in his or her life. The virtues discussed are: 1. Attentiveness 2. Confession 3. Courage 4. Courtesy 5. Detachment 6. Discernment 7. Eagerness 8. Empathy 9. Encouragement 10. Eucharistic Reverence 11. Evangelization 12. Example 13. Faith 14. Work This book is an excellent formation book for Franciscan friars, nuns, sisters, and laity. The 52 week format can be adapted as the Order wishes. Few books are guaranteed to change a person's spiritual life if the pattern of study in the book is followed. This book will definitely make the reader into a stronger follower of Christ, through the example and teachings of Saint Francis. May God bless you through Saint Francis as you read through, meditate on, and put into practice the Franciscan Virtues!
