Book Synopsis The Diffusion of Chromium in Gamma Uranium by : S. J. Rothman
Download or read book The Diffusion of Chromium in Gamma Uranium written by S. J. Rothman and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The diffusion of tracer amounts of chromium in gamma uranium was studied by the radioactive tracer-sectioning method. The temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficient D is given by D = 1.98 x 10−3 ( -2l,800/RT)cm sq./sec, in poor agreement with the data of Mosse, Levy, and Adda. Possible reasons for the discrepancy are discussed, and it is concluded that the present data are to be preferred as a basis for theoretical studies of the diffusion of tracers in gamma uranium. The difference between the activation energy and that for self-diffusion is also discussed; no conclusions are reached.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1983, this book presents both the technical and political information necessary to evaluate the emerging threat to world security posed by recent advances in uranium enrichment technology. Uranium enrichment has played a relatively quiet but important role in the history of efforts by a number of nations to acquire nuclear weapons and by a number of others to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons. For many years the uranium enrichment industry was dominated by a single method, gaseous diffusion, which was technically complex, extremely capital-intensive, and highly inefficient in its use of energy. As long as this remained true, only the richest and most technically advanced nations could afford to pursue the enrichment route to weapon acquisition. But during the 1970s this situation changed dramatically. Several new and far more accessible enrichment techniques were developed, stimulated largely by the anticipation of a rapidly growing demand for enrichment services by the world-wide nuclear power industry. This proliferation of new techniques, coupled with the subsequent contraction of the commercial market for enriched uranium, has created a situation in which uranium enrichment technology might well become the most important contributor to further nuclear weapon proliferation. Some of the issues addressed in this book are: A technical analysis of the most important enrichment techniques in a form that is relevant to analysis of proliferation risks; A detailed projection of the world demand for uranium enrichment services; A summary and critique of present institutional non-proliferation arrangements in the world enrichment industry, and An identification of the states most likely to pursue the enrichment route to acquisition of nuclear weapons.

Book Synopsis Advances in Nuclear Science and Technology by : Ernest J. Henley
Download or read book Advances in Nuclear Science and Technology written by Ernest J. Henley and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Nuclear Science and Technology, Volume 1 provides an authoritative, complete, coherent, and critical review of the nuclear industry. This book covers a variety of topics, including nuclear power stations, graft polymerization, diffusion in uranium alloys, and conventional power plants. Organized into seven chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the three stages of the operation of a power plant, either nuclear or conventionally fueled. This text then examines the major problems that face the successful development of commercial nuclear power plants. Other chapters consider the synthesis of graft copolymers by radiation-induced graft polymerization. This book discusses as well the processes of technical importance in the nuclear field, such as the bonding of fuel materials to cladding, or the release of fission gases from fuel elements. The final chapter deals with the effects of nuclear radiation in causing chemical changes in matter. This book is a valuable resource for scientists and engineers.
