Book excerpt: The definitive monograph on Dieter Rams, one of the most influential product designers of the twentieth century As head of design at Braun from 1961 to 1995, Dieter Rams created some of the twentieth century's most iconic objects. Rams's life and work are indelibly linked to his thoughts about how people live, and how they can live better. Products he designed in the 1960s are still produced and sold today, and his ideas on good design continue to inspire designers and consumers. Now available again with a stunning new cover, this comprehensive monograph, with a foreword by Jonathan (Jony) Ive, former chief design officer of Apple, explores not only Rams's life and work, but also his design philosophy. The book includes detailed text covering Rams's life, the intellectual context in which he worked, his designs for Braun and Vitsoe, and the ideas and lectures he developed as an advocate for good design. Sketches and photographs of finished products and prototypes provide insight into Rams's design process, diverse archival material gives a complete picture of his life and work, and specially commissioned photographs of Dieter Rams's house and the Braun archive provide an exclusive glimpse of the world's most complete collection of Rams's designs. Known for the hundreds of iconic products he designed for Braun and Vitsoe, this comprehensive and exhaustive monograph also features Rams's only architectural work and the ideas about living sustainably embodied in his 'ten commandments'.

Book excerpt: Abstract: A discussion of obesity proposes that weight is physiologically regulated and dieting cannot alter this biological fact. This point is confirmed by the fact that most dieters lose weight only temporarily. Physical activity is the most effective method for decreasing the body's demand for fat. The concept that fatness is a major cause of disease is challenged. The rise in average weight since 1960 has accompanied a decrease in the death rate from cardiovascular disease. Exceptions are diabetes and high blood pressure. Weight control through exercise can be an important treatment. Most motivation to lose weight is based on looking better rather than feeling better. The body's "set point" (normal weight) for fatness is detailed. This point is reinforced by referenced scientific studies. Popular diets and diet books are described. Studies are cited to show that exercise uses calories and also regulates appetite; it is suggested that this lowers the "set point" and is more advantageous than a reducing diet. organizations for fat people are listed. changes in attitudes toward fatness is advocated since most weight reduction regimens are ultimately unsuccessful. Book excerpt: Interviews with the people who worked with Roth during the artist's time spent in Chicago, Providence, New York, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles.Dieter Roth (1930-1998) was one of the most innovative and challenging artists of the twentieth century. During preparations for a recent retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, it became clear that America played a crucial role in Roth's artistic development. In Philadelphia he and his students experimented with new graphic and photographic techniques, which resulted in SNOW, a major work now owned by MoMA. It was in Providence that he had his first large studio, and the work made there is pivotal in the development of Roth's oeuvre, including his paintings and prints that incorporated perishable foodstuffs. In Los Angeles, Roth made his famous Steeple Chase (A Race) exhibition, using suitcases filled with different cheeses. Many of the works Roth created during that period are illustrated here in full color. 780 color illustrations.

Yet victory can be yours. Increasingly, scientific studies are indicating that in health matters, prayer works--and in The Dieter's Prayer Book, you'll find that daily ounce of spiritual encouragement you need. Not tied to any one particular diet, The Dieter's Prayer Book can be used in conjunction with any healthy-eating program, or on its own.
