Book excerpt: Philip Smith (18001880), one of Tasmania's earliest settlers and later one of its best known, doesn't tell us why in 1831 he left his career as a London lawyer, except (ambiguously) that he had been a wicked wight. Racked with sea-sickness and contemptuous of the miserly and hot-tempered Captain with his incomprehensible Scots accent, he hated almost every minute of the 4 month journey. Partly to keep himself sane, Smith kept detailed day-by-day notes and then rewrote them as a witty, acerbic and entertaining account of his adventures. He chronicles everything from obsessing about the wind and their progress (or lack of it) to diversions to pass the time: a ceremony to mark crossing the Equator; catching and eating shark; a sudden enthusiasm for chess amongst both those accommodated in the cabin and those in the steerage. He rejoices in dawns and sunsets, is exhilarated by lightning and wild weather, vividly describes a terrifying hurricane with the sea running mountains high and white as a field of snow and occasionally helps the sailors pump out the ship which has sprung a small leak. Smith clearly thought himself much superior to his fellow travellers and grumbles that most of what he recorded about them was petty squabbling & disputes & pitiful sayings but it is his close attention to the emotional complexity of everyone from the Captain to individual sailors, cabin passengers to steerage servants, that, today, makes his diary so rich and interesting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Fenton (1820-1901) was born in Ireland and emigrated to Tasmania (then known as Van Diemen's Land) with his family in 1833. He became a pioneer settler in an area on the Forth River and published this history of the island in 1884. The book begins with the discovery of the island in 1642 and concludes with the deaths of some significant public figures in the colony in 1884. The establishment of the colony on the island, and the involvement of convicts in its building, is documented. A chapter on the native aborigines gives a fascinating insight into the attitudes of the colonising people, and a detailed account of the removal of the native Tasmanians to Flinders Island, in an effort to separate them from the colonists. The book also contains portraits of some aboriginal people, as well as a glossary of their language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Samuel Sidney developed an interest in the Australian colony after the emigration of his brother John to New South Wales. Samuel and John established the magazine Sidney's Emigrant Journal, and worked together on two books concerning Australian emigration. The present work is an excellent description of Australia's contemporary state, where Samuel Sidney is clearly influenced by both Caroline Chisholm and Alexander Harris. He argues that the Australian colonies are ideal for working class emigration. Already in the introduction it becomes clear that Sidney is very anti-Wakefield, which makes it an important document in the debate between competing proposals for emigration. Apparently Sidney was very well-informed, he had access to otherwise inaccessible primary sources, and the verbatim transcripts add considerably to the book's value. Sidney's work is a full guide, giving excessive and detailed information on one of the most interesting world-regions."--Abebooks website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Clements Wickham RN, played an essential navigational role in three voyages of HMS Beagle, the ship on which Charles Darwin, in the second voyage, was naturalist. On the third voyage Wickham was the Commander, from 1837 until he left, ostensibly owing to ill health, in 1841. From 1842 to 1858, he played a prominent role in Brisbane affairs, as Police Magistrate and, later, Government Resident, living at Newstead House. In 1842 he married Anna, daughter of Hannibal Macarthur, who died in 1852, and he married Ellen Deering in 1857 both of whom bore children. Darwin described Wickham as a glorious fine fellow. But despite such praise, and Wickham's great contributions to the founding of Australia, as a navigator, charting and naming its coastline, and as an administrator, no biography of him has appeared apart from some valuable essays and chapters and an excellent booklet by Brian Stewart. The present work attempts to track Wickham's activities throughout his life, until his death at Biarritz in 1864. The text has been kept close to that of the chroniclers of the voyages, Phillip Parker King, Robert Fitz-Roy, Charles Darwin and John Lort Stokes, his companions on board.
