Download or read book No. 91/92 written by Lauren Elkin and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A love letter to Paris and a meditation on how it has changed in two decades, evolving from the twentieth century into the twenty-first, from analog to digital. Your telephone is precious. It may be envied. We recommend vigilance when using it in public. --Paris bus public notice In fall 2014 Lauren Elkin began keeping a diary of her bus commutes in the Notes app on her iPhone 5c, writing down the interesting things and people she saw in a Perecquian homage to Bus Lines 91 and 92, which she took from her apartment in the 5th Arrondissement to her teaching job in the 7th. Reading the notice, she decided to be vigilant when using her phone: she would carry out a public transport vigil, using it to take in the world around her and notice all the things she would miss if she continued using it the way she had been, the way everyone does--to surf the web, check social media, maintain her daily sense of self through digital interaction. Her goal became to observe the world through the screen of her phone, rather than using her phone to distract from the world. During the course of that academic year, the Charlie Hebdo attacks occurred and Elkin had an ectopic pregnancy, requiring emergency surgery. At that point, her diary of dailiness became a study of the counterpoint between the everyday and the Event, mediated through early twenty-first century technology, and observed from the height of a bus seat. No. 91/92 is a love letter to Paris, and a meditation on how it has changed in the two decades the author has lived there, evolving from the twentieth century into the twenty-first, from analog to digital.

Then in the laundry room of his apartment block he encounters an alluring young woman. He offers her work typing up his manuscript. Anya is not interested in politics, but the job will be a welcome distraction, as will the writer's evident attraction towards her. Book Synopsis The Diary of a Nose by : Jean-Claude Ellena
Download or read book The Diary of a Nose written by Jean-Claude Ellena and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2013-01-22 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intimate exploration of inspiration and creativity, from the "parfumeur exclusif" of the house of Hermès. A scent has incantatory powers, capable of transporting you to your past, of kindling fantasies, of creating a vivid mise en scène—literally out of thin air. In the hands of the truly great, perfume creation is a kind of alchemy. Where does inspiration for this visceral art come from? How does one capture the essence of emotions, of desire? Jean-Claude Ellena has a sublime gift. As "parfumeur exclusif" (or "the nose") for Hermès, he elevates fragrance to an art form. A "writer of perfume," his concoctions are as finely composed and evocative as a haiku. He is also a conjurer of sorts: "I create an illusion that is actually stronger than reality . . . you enter the scent and follow the path." The Diary of a Nose is a collection of Ellena’s meditations on the world of scents, and what stirs his creation of some of the world’s most desired fragrances. Inspiration can come from anywhere—a market stall, a landscape, or even the movement of calligraphy. Though each smell has its own distinct character, a gifted perfumer creates olfactory experiences that are intensely personal and unique, that blossom on the body and leave a trace of us lingering after we have left a room. Seductive, delicate, and elegant as any of Ellena’s creations, The Diary of a Nose seeks to capture the most elusive facets of this rarefied and mysterious art.

Book excerpt: The diary and essays of Brian Eno republished twenty-five years on with a new introduction by the artist in a beautiful hardback edition.'One of the seminal books about music . . . an invaluable insight into the mind and working practices of one of the industry's undeniable geniuses.'GUARDIANAt the end of 1994, Brian Eno resolved to keep a diary. His plans to go to the cinema, theatre and galleries fell quickly to the wayside. What he did do - and write - however, was astonishing: ruminations on his collaborative work with David Bowie, U2, James and Jah Wobble, interspersed with correspondence and essays dating back to 1978. These 'appendices' covered topics from the generative and ambient music Eno pioneered to what he believed the role of an artist and their art to be, alongside adroit commentary on quotidian tribulations and happenings around the world. This beautiful 25th-anniversary hardcover edition has been redesigned in the same size as the diary that eventually became this book. It features two ribbons, pink paper delineating the appendices (matching the original edition) and a two-tone paper-over-board cover, which pays homage to the original design. An intimate insight into one of the most influential creative artists of our time, A Year with Swollen Appendices is an essential classic.

Download or read book Untitled written by Ian Brown and published by Random House Canada. This book was released on 2026-01-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the author of the multiple award-winning The Boy in the Moon, and Sixty, comes the story of a father searching for a home for his disabled son, and his conversations with Jean Vanier, one of our great moral thinkers, about the value of every human and where each of us can find our place. In 2008, Ian Brown began a correspondence with Canadian philosopher and humanitarian Jean Vanier, in which Ian asked him questions such as "What is our human value?" "Are you afraid of death?" and "How have you managed the crises in your own faith?" Jean Vanier wrote back with unfailing humility, patience and acceptance, to Ian, who was searching for answers about where his profoundly disabled son, Walker, fit in the world. This is a book for both secular readers and spiritual seekers; for people who are looking for deeper meaning, if not happiness, and ways to make sense of the world. Both Ian Brown and Jean Vanier show us how we might take risks to move beyond our comfort zones and place ourselves among other humans who are conventionally judged as "weaker" than the rest of us, and what they and we can gain by an even playing field between the "normal" and the "broken."
