Book excerpt: "Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), which has been found to impair one's social, familial, scholastic, and occupational adjustment, is one of the most comprehensively examined neurodevelopmental disorders. For deaf individuals, language and executive functioning have important implications for cognitive and academic functioning. However, for deaf and hard of hearing (D/HH) individuals with ADHD, it is not clear to what extent their cognitive and academic functioning are impacted as the amount of research conducted with deaf individuals with ADHD has been limited, especially within the realm of deaf adults. There are many areas that need to be explored in relation to ADHD, executive dysfunction, deaf individuals, and language acquisition/secondary language delay. In relation to evaluating and assessing a D/HH individual for ADHD, Farber (2019) demonstrated evidence of validity for the Barkley Adult ADHD Rating Scale-IV (BAARS-IV) as a screening measure for ADHD in college-level deaf students. For this study, the validity of the BAARS-IV as a screener for discriminating ADHD from Non-ADHD among college-level D/HH students was replicated and additional evidence of concurrent validity obtained. This study also demonstrated evidence of validity for the Barkley Deficits in Executive Functions Scale (BDEFS) as a screening measure for executive functions in college-level deaf individuals. Also, this study provided a clearer understanding of the significant role that executive functions play in the overall functioning of D/HH individuals with and without ADHD."--Abstract.

An analysis of variance (ANOVA), multivariate analyses of variance (MANOVA), and sensitivity, specificity, and predictive value analyses found that both the BRIEF-A and CAARS were adequate behavior rating scales for measuring ADHD symptoms in a deaf population. Results also revealed that the BRIEF-A was a more specific measure whereas the CAARS was a more sensitive measure."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: Objective: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a heterogeneous and chronic disorder characterized by developmentally inappropriate and persistent symptoms of inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity that result in impairment (APA, 2013). Because ADHD is impacted by genetics, experiences during developmental periods, current experiences, and more, a biopsychosocial approach considering the differential susceptibility of individuals is necessary in understanding ADHD (Richards, 2013; Belsky, 1997). The current study explored the impact of social identities, childhood trauma, and current exercise on the expression of ADHD in a large sample of US college students. Method: Participants (N = 2,172) from six public universities completed an online survey. Trauma, exercise, and ADHD were explored in an intersectional framework across six groups based on race, ethnicity, sex, gender, and sexual orientation. Results: Sexual orientation and gender identity minority (SGM) students across race and ethnicity reported high rates of ADHD diagnosis and symptoms, experienced the most trauma in childhood, exercised the least, and struggled with the most impairment. Additionally, trauma and exercise impacted the association of ADHD symptoms with impairment differently across identity groups. For cisgender, heterosexual males of color, childhood trauma emerged as a risk factor and exercise emerged as a protective factor for the impact of ADHD on daily impairment. Discussion: Results highlight the need for systematic research that approaches ADHD through a biopsychosocial lens and addresses how identity factors (especially SGM identities) impact the expression of ADHD.

Book excerpt: "Research on Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in adults is growing as the chronic nature of its course and development is more understood. Those with ADHD tend to have deficits in executive functioning (EF), which particularly affects college students who experience academic and life challenges that rely on EF. Relatively little research exists documenting evidence-based treatments of ADHD for this population. Recent research suggests that internet-based interventions (IBI) can generally be beneficial for young adults, but more work is needed to support this claim with regards to ADHD, in particular. The current study examines an IBI adaptation of a recently developed intervention for college students with ADHD that focuses on organizational, time management, and planning (OTMP) skills in a group format. Students with ADHD at three universities (n = 38; 65.8% biologically female; M age 23.64; 78.9% White; 94.7% Not Hispanic or Latino) completed a battery of self-report measures of ADHD symptoms, impairment, and OTMP skills pre- and post-treatment. Most participants reported a previous ADHD diagnosis (n = 28) and all others reported at least five symptoms of inattentive symptoms at pre-treatment (M for all participants = 6.55). The manualized intervention consisted of six group and three individual sessions. Pre-post differences in symptom severity and functional impairment due to ADHD-related symptoms suggest that the intervention has a positive effect, and students endorsed generally high satisfaction with many aspects of their treatment experience. Overall, one-tailed, paired t-tests comparing pre- and post-treatment scores indicated significant improvements in inattentive (IA) and hyperactive- impulsive (Hyp/Imp) ADHD symptoms, family-, school-, life skills-, and self-concept-related impairment, impairment related to self-management to time, self-motivation, and emotional self- regulation, and use of OTMP skills. Additionally, participants generally reported satisfaction with the IBI-adapted intervention. In sum, results suggest that the online adaptation of this intervention had promise to be efficacious; more extensive study of the intervention is needed."--Abstract.
