Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fear is his favorite medium FBI agent Karen Younger’s worst nightmare just came true. A vicious serial killer from a cold case has struck again—his crimes spanning two different continents, eight years apart. But he’s only getting started, and with each young woman brutally beaten to death across San Carlos, California, he’s sending someone a message. Glenda Lindstrom is facing a nightmare of her own. Her abusive ex-husband, Ralph Beringer, is back in town—repeatedly calling, stalking her kids, breaking into their home. He doesn’t want a reunion, he wants revenge. Beringer has never forgiven Glenda for taking their son away and remarrying. But she can’t convince anyone that the man terrorizing her is capable of far worse than misdemeanors. Beringer is rapidly losing control over his murderous impulses, and he has Glenda and her family exactly where he needs them to complete his grisly scheme. With only a handful of clues and gritty instinct, Agent Younger is running out of time to solve the case before a madman’s rage erupts again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To solve a centuries-old crime, a man makes a deal with the devil: “The fantasy, the murder and the historical action are . . . all wonderful” (San Francisco Chronicle). An aging scholar of Restoration history, Nicholas Fenton has long dreamed of traveling into the past. He has a date in mind—May 10, 1675—as well as a purpose: to solve the murder case of the woman he loves, his rakehell ancestor’s lovely wife. Obsessed with delivering her from danger, he turns to an unlikely accomplice: the devil. After striking a bargain with the prince of darkness, Fenton awakens in the seventeenth century in the much-younger body of dashing Sir Nick Fenton. In an era when gentlemen died by the blade, Fenton is handy with a rapier, and his knowledge of local history gives him a leg up on the swashbucklers who would have his hide. But while his sword may help him rescue his beloved, it will take more than that to save his soul. Even in 1675, the devil is in the details.

Book excerpt: With two essays devoted to Wordsworth, The Fate of Translation reframes the discussion of Hesperian aesthetics initiated in Robert Eisenhauer's Mythic Paradigms, suggesting how the question of translation poses itself at the crossing of textual high- and low-roads: on the one hand, in the critical and scholarly debate concerning the relevance of Goethe's «Der Wandrer» (in the English version by William Taylor) to the primal/primary scene of autobiography and, on the other, in the reprojection of supernatural agency (numen) in the context of the Literature of Power. Confrontational deixis and a hermeneutic counterturn energize Wordsworth's self-assertive resensing of antiquity and modernity via satire, pastoral, and the sonnet. The third essay, ranging from Pindarizing texts by Cowley, Goethe, and Hölderlin to the films of Matthew Barney, shifts the focus to mimetic enthusiasms among translators and replicators of the «full fan-experience.» John Barth's intriguing analogy between metafiction and fractal geometry serves as the catalyst for a reading of texts by Thomas Browne and Friedrich Schlegel, a major painting by Philipp Otto Runge, and The Arabian Nights as malignly received by Poe. The arabesque and grotesque are seen as engaged in a problematics of passion at the utopian end of art, a consensualist paradigm akin to the Dionysian liberation of the subject/player/fan in baseball - one whose field of implication includes Nietzsche and contemporary novelists. Eisenhauer reads Padgett Powell's Edisto as a declamatory mini-epic divergent in its muthos from the tradition of the «American hieroglyphic». Edisto's fictive reinvention of the South suggests a revisiting of the Literature of Power as priviledged, emancipative counterfacticity of «other truth» congruent with the fictive worlds of Cable, Faulkner, and Günther Grass.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "China has an image as a realm of Oriental despotism where law is at best window-dressing and at worst an instrument of coercion and tyranny. The rule of law seems an elusive ideal in the face of entrenched obstacles baked, as it were, into China's cultural and political DNA. In this highly original contribution to the interdisciplinary field of law and humanities, Haiyan Lee contends that this image arises from an ahistorical understanding of China's political-legal tradition, particularly the failure to distinguish what she calls high justice and low justice. Lee argues that the liberal (and, so to speak, horizontal) conception of justice as fairness is quite different from the Chinese understanding of law. In the Chinese legal imagination, she shows, justice is a vertical concept, with low justice between individuals firmly subordinated to the high justice of the state. China's political-legal culture mistrusts law's ability to deliver justice and privileges moral over procedural justice. Lee shows that Chinese literature and film invariably dramatize the relationship between law and morality in ways that emphasize law's concession to moral sentiments and the triumph of moral justice through the discretion of a sagacious judge or the defiance of a vigilante hero. As China rises to global superpower status, its conception of justice can no longer be treated as a pale, floundering, and negligible sideshow to the legal drama of defending liberty and upholding human rights in the West. Lee's book helps us recognize the fight for justice outside the familiar arenas of liberal democracy and in terms other than those furnished by the rule of law"--
