Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brisbane: Utopian Dreams and Dystopian Nightmares tells the stories of little-known, and rather peculiar aspects of Brisbane’s colourful history. Eleven Brisbane authors from the 19th and 20th centuries wrote about how wonderful, ‘utopian’, Brisbane could be — or how dreadful, ‘dystopian’, it could also be. Some writers imagined a future utopian Brisbane where inequality has been eliminated, where everyone is prosperous, living in the most beautiful city with wide, tree-lined boulevards, wonderful opera-houses and museums, bubbling fountains and grand squares. They saw Brisbane becoming the centre of the civilised world, a model for humanity. Other writers depicted Brisbane as having been annihilated, violently wiped off the face of the earth except for a few stone ruins overgrown with lantana. These dystopian images saw Brisbane residents enslaved in a racial nightmare, beset with poverty and violence, their lives being precarious at best. What led to these utopian and dystopian visions? Who were the visionaries? What do they tell us about a little-known part of Brisbane’s quirky history? These are images of a wonderful or dreadful Brisbane that never eventuated — but could have. This well-illustrated book reveals all in a witty, but sometimes disturbing way.

Book excerpt: The fourth in Dark Passage’s reissue series of crime mysteries by June Wright, The Devil’s Caress, originally published in 1952, is an tense psychological thriller set on the wild southern coast of the Mornington Peninsula, outside Melbourne. Overworked young medico Marsh Mowbray has been invited to the country home of her revered mentor, Dr. Kate Waring, but it's far from the restful weekend she was hoping for. As storms rage outside, the house on the cliff’s edge seethes with hatred and tension, and two suspicious deaths soon follow. "Doubt is the devil’s caress", one of the characters tells Marsh, as her resolute efforts to get to the bottom of the deaths force her to question everyone's motives, even those of Dr. Kate. This is a classic country house mystery with shades of Agatha Christie, but with the jagged emotional edge of Daphne du Maurier.

A distinctive, oddly-shaped building looms menacingly out of the night, squatting on the narrow laneway’s paving stones. The Lupanar Grande, is the largest Pompeii brothel and a place reeking of body odour, stale perfume, urine and sex. The prostitutes are the dregs of society, infames, but all hope has not been extinguished. Selene, a free-born street prostitute from Naples, is new to Pompeii. She lusts after wealth and fame. Ambitious and enticingly pretty, she is determined to replace the famous courtesan, Prima. She will be drawn into a Lupanar blackmail ring. Velina, a slave, is bought by the brothel’s leno and taken to the Lupanar with her best friend, Alexa. As slaves, they are limited to its interior and the outside footpath where they solicit for business. They sleep in their cells and are forbidden to stray from the brothel. Their leno, Servius, takes all they earn. Flora, independent and shrewd, lives in her own tiny, two-room house adjacent to the Lupanar. Behind her cerulean blue front door, she sees everything through her large, front window. She will save girls from prostitution. Hester, a shy, gentle girl, belongs to a small group known as Christianos. Its meeting place is located opposite the Lupanar, with unfortunate consequences. Lucius Attilius is addicted to gambling and women. It leads him into the Pompeii arena, where few gladiators die but many suffer severe injuries. He will find a love so strong that it overcomes even the sordid Lupanar. Their lives intertwine as Vesuvius erupts. What will happen to the survivors?

Book excerpt: This devilish tale opens on a tiny speck of land in Queensland's beautiful Moreton Bay and ends in a fire-gutted church in South Brisbane. Scottish settlers in the 1800s named the tiny island Clootie, their Scottish name for Satan. A portal to Hell exists in a cave on Clootie. Blind Father Michael Brody lives with his dog Finn in Lime Bay on the foreshore of Moreton Bay. The priest was blinded six years ago by a demonic light when he attempted to wall off the Hell-gate to protect twelve year old Riley Kennedy from Asmodeus a powerful demon lord of Light who lusts for Riley's rare gift to converse with shadow beings. Riley is now eighteen years old and returns to Clootie on the Australia Day long weekend to exact vengeance for the murders of his mother and father by kelpie water-demons six years ago but the brick wall built by Father Brody to protect Riley is crumbling. Father Brody's demon fighting allies are; Finn his loyal cattle dog. Miriam, the spirit of a white witch, Merlin her cat and the Shadow Itzal who came from the Shadow world to guard Riley and his gift. Ranged against Father Brody is Asmodeus a powerful demon-lord with a demonic army and a dark magic cult. In struggles between Good and Evil the Good does not always emerge a victor as a group of visitors from Brisbane discover. Ben Stirling a business tycoon had no belief in the occult when he rented Hob House on Clootie for the holiday weekend. In his party are his business partner Jock McKee, Ben's widowed daughter Louise, his stepson Mitchell and Mitchell's glamourous unfaithful wife Tiffany and her latest 'friend' Simon Damone. As the body count rises Ben finally accepts reality of the occult on Clootie Island and he closes the Hell-gate in the cave with explosives. Asmodeus has a penchant for attractive red-haired human females and lovely flame-haired Louise Stirling is kidnapped by his human thrall to be a gift for his demon master, a wicked act that results in bloody sacrifice and a battle between Good and Evil to close another portal to Hell and this time the Hell-gate is in the ruins of a derelict church in Brisbane. Ben Stirling wonders how many more portals into Hell exist on Earth.

Book excerpt: "This volume of essays is an exploration of the way in which scholars from different disciplines, standpoints and theoretical orientations attempt to write life stories in the Pacific. It is the product of a conference organised by the Division of Pacific and Asian History at The Australian National University in December 2005. The aim of the conference was to explore ways in which Pacific lives are read and constructed through a variety of media: films, fiction, faction, history under four overarching themes. The first, Framing Lives, sought to explore various ways of constructing a life from a classic western perspective of birth, formation, experiences and death of an individual to other ways, for example, life as secondary to a longer genealogical entity, life as a symbol of collective experience, individual lives captured and fragmented in a mosaic of others, lives made meaningful by their implication in a particular historical or cultural web, the underlying values and world views that inform one or another approach to framing a life. The second theme, the Stuff of Life, looked at materials, methods and collaborative arrangements with which the biographer, autobiographer and recorder work, their objectives, constraints, inspirations, challenges and tricks. The third section, Story Lines, focused on formats and genres such as edited diaries, collections of writings, voice recordings, genres of biography autobiography, truth and fiction (verse, dance, novels) and the varieties and different advantages of narrative shapes that crystallise the telling of a life. The final section, Telling Lives/Changing Lives, focused on biography/autobiography and the consciousness of identity, history, purpose, lives as witness and windows, telling lives as change for those involved in the tale, the telling, the listening. The overall aim was to bring out both the generic or universal challenges of telling lives as well as to highlight the particular tendencies and trends in the Pacific. Yet these four themes, which seemed analytically promising at the outset, proved in practice difficult to disentangle from the presentations at the workshop"--Provided by publisher.

This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 1157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A veteran of some of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, Ambrose Bierce went on to become one of the darkest and most death haunted of American writers, the blackest of black humorists. This volume gathers the most celebrated and significant of Bierce's writings. In the Midst of Life (Tales of Soldiers and Civilians), his collection of short fiction about the Civil War, which includes the masterpieces "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" and "Chickamauga," is suffused with a fiercely ironic sense of the horror and randomness of war. Can Such Things Be? brings together "The Death of Halpin Frayser," "The Damned Thing," "The Moonlit Road," and other tales of terror that make Bierce the genre's most significant American practitioner between Poe and Lovecraft. The Devil's Dictionary, the brilliant lexicon of subversively cynical definitions on which Bierce worked for decades, displays to the full his corrosive wit. In Bits of Autobiography, the series of memoirs that includes the memorable "What I Saw of Shiloh," he recreates his experiences in the war and its aftermath. The volume is rounded out with a selection of his best uncollected stories. Acclaimed Bierce scholar S. T. Joshi provides detailed notes and a newly researched chronology of Bierce's life and mysterious disappearance. LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an independent nonprofit cultural organization founded in 1979 to preserve our nation’s literary heritage by publishing, and keeping permanently in print, America’s best and most significant writing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Mary MacLane comes off the page quivering with life. She is before her time ... Moving.” - London Times With her first book - written in 1901 in Butte, Montana at age nineteen - she was hailed as a marvel by the likes of H.L. Mencken, Clarence Darrow, and Harriet Monroe. She went on to become a pioneering newswoman, gambler extraordinaire, bon vivant, and a star of the silent screen. She influenced Gertrude Stein, inspired F. Scott Fitzgerald, and upon her death in 1929 was eulogized as “an errant daughter of literature ... the first of the self-expressionists, and also the first of the Flappers,” as the creator of “that revolution in manners, that transvaluation of values in the female code of behavior known as the Roaring Twenties.” Too radical in style for 1902, its original publisher made countless changes to the author’s far-superior original - the same pacification reprinted by all other publishers. This annotated, unexpurgated affordable edition makes Mary Mac-Lane’s striking teenage debut - “the first of the blogs” - available in its unalterd, uncompromised form. “Mary MacLane’s first book was the first of the confessional diaries ever written in this nation, and it was a sensation.” - N.Y. Times editoral “Anyone who reads her will never forget her voice.” - Biographile “She reminds us of the power of personal narrative, honestly told.” - The Atlantic “In a pre-soundbite age she already knew how to draw blood in one direct sentence.” - The Awl “She had a short but fiery life of writing and misadventure, and her writing was a template for the confessional memoirs that have become ubiquitous.” - The New Yorker “One of the most fascinatingly self-involved personalities of the 20th century.” - The Age “A girl wonder.” - Harper’s “Confessional journalists have people like Mary MacLane to thank.” - Flavorwire “Her diaries ignited a national uproar, ushering in a new era for women’s voices. Her elegant, ambitious embrace of full-disclosure opened a door to what was possible for women.” - The Atlantic “Fiery frankness made her a pioneer.” - Time Out Chicago “Her poetry is one of extremes: lust for happiness, despair for life.” - Hairy Dog Review “Riveting.” - N.H. Public Radio “I Await The Devil’s Coming is a small masterpiece, full of camp and swagger.” - Parul Sehgal, NPR “Pioneering newswoman, later silent-screen star, considered the veritable spirit of the iconoclastic Twenties.” - Boston Globe “A pioneering feminist - a sensation.” - Feminist Bookstore News “First of the self-expressionists, and the first of the Flappers.” - Chicagoan Check www.marymaclane.com for exclusive content, news, and previews.
