Book excerpt: This book examines the Yugoslavian attempt to adapt Marx's 'Paris Commune' model of participatory democracy to the context of a one-party nation state, particularly with the representational system put in place between 1974 and 1990. It is the only book to examine in depth the attempted integration of worker self-management in the workplace with political representation at the levels of commune, republic and federation. It includes detailed references to many studies in Yugolslav journals, available only in Serbo-Croatian, on the effectiveness of participation in workplaces and local government. The extensive data provides information on self-management, representation, local governments, the league of Communists and other dimensions of the former Yugoslavia. It also provides a critical but positive assessment of the Yugoslav experiment in participatory democracy at workplace and communal levels that has significance beyond the Yugoslav case.

Based on interviews with key members of former Yugoslavia's political elite, documents, and other primary sources, the book reconstructs the elite's motives and reasons for the actions that led to state collapse. Contrary to the dominant explanation of the collapse of Yugoslavia, the book argues that Yugoslavia did not collapse primarily because of the complexity of its ethnic structure, of changes in the international environment, or of a deep economic crisis. Although these factors provided the context in which the elite operated, it was the elite's perception of these problems that decisively influenced their decisions."--BOOK JACKET.

The book responds to contemporary awareness of the societal and cultural nature of subjectivity with a new material and dialectic psychosocial theory, comprising conscious as well as unconscious levels. The contributions argue that disregarding socio-economic aspects of peace and how they relate to the everyday leaves a vacuum in the understanding of the formation of post-conflict economies. To address this gap, the book outlines and deploys the concept of ‘post-conflict economy formation’. This is a multifaceted phenomenon, including both formal and informal processes that occur in the post-conflict period and contribute to the introduction, adjustment, or abolition of economic practices, institutions, and rules that inform the transformation of the socio-economic fabric of the society. The contributions engage with existing statebuilding and peacebuilding debates, while bringing in critical political economy perspectives. Specifically, they analyse processes of post-conflict economy formation and the navigation between livelihood needs; local translations of the liberal hegemonic order; and different, sparse manifestations of welfare states. The book concludes that a sustainable peace requires the formation of peace economies: economies that work towards reducing structural inequalities and grievances of the (pre-)conflict period, as well as addressing the livelihood concerns of citizens. This book was originally published as a special issue of Civil Wars.
