Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern-day practice of health care was imported into Nigeria over 500 years ago. In 1947, the first national health plan was developed in Nigeria with the primary goal of providing universal health care (UHC), but this goal remains elusive to date. This comprehensive book presents the roadmap needed to attain UHC in Nigeria and offers a blueprint for achieving high-quality health care in the nation. Starting with a brief overview of the Nigerian state, the fundamentals of health care, including the challenges to affordable quality healthcare delivery, the author critically examines the healthcare system in Nigeria and offers specific recommendations to invigorate the system and improve interprofessional collaborations. Each chapter includes case studies to allow readers to contextualize the information presented and behavioral learning objectives to test readers' knowledge. Among the topics covered: The Organizational Structure and Leadership of the Nigerian Healthcare System The Vulnerabilities of the Nigerian Healthcare System The Spectrum of Complementary and Alternative Medicine Emerging Developments in Traditional Medicine Practice in Nigeria The Plight of Persons Living with Disabilities: The Visible Invisibles in Nigeria A Comparative Analysis of the Health System of Nigeria and Six Selected Nations Around the World A Qualitative Investigation of the Barriers to the Delivery of High-Quality Healthcare Services in Nigeria The Political and Economic Reforms Needed to Achieve Universal and High-Quality Health Care in Nigeria Reimagining the Nigerian Healthcare System to Achieve Universal and High-Quality Health Care by 2030 The Nigerian Healthcare System: Pathway to Universal and High-Quality Health Care is ideal for adoption as a textbook in health services administration, health policy and management, health informatics, healthcare delivery systems, and primary health care courses offered at universities in Nigeria. It also would appeal to students and faculty in African diaspora programs internationally. The book is also essential for policymakers, health systems technocrats, researchers, and professionals in various health disciplines, including medicine, nursing, and allied health.

Book excerpt: "The Nation has lost sight of its public health goals and has allowed the system of public health to fall into 'disarray'," from The Future of Public Health. This startling book contains proposals for ensuring that public health service programs are efficient and effective enough to deal not only with the topics of today, but also with those of tomorrow. In addition, the authors make recommendations for core functions in public health assessment, policy development, and service assurances, and identify the level of government--federal, state, and local--at which these functions would best be handled.

Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2021 in the subject Health - Health system, grade: A2, Obafemi Awolowo University, language: English, abstract: This paper spotlights several empirical thoughts on team development and conflict management in relation to the Nigerian healthcare setting. The subject of conflict is gaining more interest among stakeholders in all spheres of life. There’s been various perspectives owing to the roles often played by conflicts at the national and international levels. The focus of this work; however, is limited to conflicts within an organization – specifically the healthcare organization in Nigeria. Team development has been studied and characterized by organizational theorists and administrators as it concerns organizational performance. In the healthcare setting, maintaining highly functional teams has been advocated for many reasons including (a) the prevention of avoidable adverse events partly due to inadequacy of communication channels among clinicians. (b) The avoidance of unnecessary waste and cost due to a lack of clarity in purpose. (c) Decreasing the risk of medical errors as a result of the incompetence among the team of healthcare professionals. In the Nigerian context, experts have also identified some barriers to effective team development. The Nigerian healthcare sector has perennially suffered from the outcomes of conflicts among various stakeholders that make up the overall healthcare system. In view of these negative consequences of such conflicts (for example industrial action leading to termination of healthcare services every year); there’s been a rise in the phenomenon of medical tourism among certain privileged segments of the Nigerian society, leaving the majority of the population vulnerable.

Book excerpt: Primary Healthcare in Nigeria: Overview, Challenges, and Prospects is a well-intended effort to explore the current health system in Nigeria in the context of the 21st Century. It provides a historical background to the Nigerian healthcare system, identifies the major challenges, and provides rich information on how to improve the health care system in Nigeria. It brings into focus Nigeria's struggle to improve primary healthcare delivery and how those efforts have not improved the peoples' health in Nigeria. It also explains how the lack of effective primary healthcare delivery system promotes medical tourism and causes loss of national revenue to foreign health care systems. This book clearly identifies basic challenges affecting healthcare delivery such as poor infrastructure, underfunding, lack of research and community involvement, inadequate labor force management and development, lack of true leadership and accountability in public office, poor health promotion and education strategies, and a fragile public-private sector partnership in healthcare delivery. Primary Healthcare in Nigeria draws examples from other countries which have improved their health systems to show that the solutions to Nigeria's healthcare problems rest in the hands of leadership committed to the nation's good and wellness. Primary Healthcare in Nigeria: Overview, Challenges, and Prospects is intended to give public health students a clearer perspective about Nigeria's health system and how it impacts peoples' lifespan, wellness, and national development. It is also a good resource for public health professionals to understand and embrace the global view of public health, and then challenges them to work toward a better healthcare delivery system. This book is organized in chapters and focuses essentially on: The historical origin of Nigeria's healthcare system Meaning of a healthcare system The Concept of Access to Health care Challenges and prospects of the primary he

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenges to better health services in Africa are well known: Africa lags behind all regions of the world, including other developing regions, on all indicators of better health. A recent report from the World Health Organisation for instance shows that while Africa has 20% of the world's sick people, it has only 4% of its healthcare workers - many of them vulnerable to the high mortality rate associated with malaria and notably the AIDS epidemic. The state of investment in healthcare infrastructure is also grossly inadequate as is the efficiency of healthcare delivery. But does this need to be so? What factors are responsible for this unacceptable state of affairs? Contributors to the volume examine the evolution of healthcare services in Africa, the ongoing national, regional and continental efforts to improve the delivery of healthcare in the continent, and the direct and indirect obstacles militating against the maturation of the services and their efficient delivery. The contributors - all distinguished experts in the field, who hold either challenging responsibilities in health in Africa or have worked in multiple components of the healthcare delivery system in the continent - also provide powerful personal insights and lessons learned in their current or previous work in the health sector in Africa. Some of the themes covered include clinical care and centers of excellence, healthcare finance and resource mobilization, primary health care systems and community health; preventive care and risk reduction in health; the role of reference laboratories; clinical research and partnerships, the role of epidemiology, statistics, monitoring and evaluation in health services; the role of the African Diaspora, and the role of politics in the organization of healthcare and the training of medical and other health professionals. From their analyses and experience the authors articulate proven strategies and solutions based on consensus expert opinions on how to improve the quality of health services and health outcomes in the continent.

Book excerpt: This paper, based on quantitative surveys at the level of primary health care facilities, health care personnel, and households in their vicinity, aims at understanding the performance of primary health care providers in four states in Nigeria. As possible ways to improve performance, the paper concludes that clearly defining lines of responsibility, implementing performance-based financing of local governments and providers, and collecting, analyzing, and sharing information are some options that can help realign incentives and improve accountability in the service delivery chain and service provision. This working paper was produced as part of the World Bank s Africa Region Health Systems for Outcomes (HSO) Program. The Program, funded by the World Bank, the Government of Norway, the Government of the United Kingdom, and the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), focuses on strengthening health systems in Africa to reach the poor and achieve tangible results related to Health, Nutrition, and Population. The main pillars and focus of the program center on knowledge and capacity building related to Human Resources for Health, Health Financing, Pharma-ceuticals, Governance and Service Delivery, and Infrastructure and ICT.

Hence, this research project was embarked to examine challenges of public health programs implementation in Nigeria and accordingly devise measures for sustainability and increased effectiveness of public health programs/projects in the country using Geographic Information System, professional projects management tools and techniques and related technologies, and scientific research methodologies. The three approaches to public health programs implementation are pre-emergency, emergency and post-emergency approaches or phases and in order to improve the effectiveness of public health programs in Nigeria, five key areas were identified. These approaches and phases are sub-divided into various components. A lapse at the pre-emergency phase/approach could hamper effectiveness of emergency approaches during a significant health emergency. Some of the findings from the project reveals that huge amount of resources are being expended in public health projects of lesser severity in the country hence, approaches towards increased effectiveness in the development and implementation of public health policies and programs were presented. Brief profiles of reputable international public health organizations and research institute (in Nigeria) were also presented with the aim of highlighting their roles, mission and impacts in ensuring sustainable public health development in Nigeria.
