Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of Japan Such knowledge can best be acquired by an historical survey, one which will trace the development of the Japa nese people and civilization from their beginnings, and in the light of this development endeavor to make clear the present ambitions and problems of the nation. The Japan of to-day is the product of centuries of growth. The advent of Western civilization sixty years ago did not cause a com plete break with the past. It has modified profoundly the inheritance bequeathed by that past, but the old Japan must be studied if the new is to be understood. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Japan The author does not lay claim to originality; he has made use of all materials at hand and has given credit where credit is due. He has, however, applied his own interpretations to the historical and other events recorded and has tried to portray their meaning and their bearing, especially upon the evolution of Japan. There is no attempt at absolute uniformity in the transliteration of Japanese words, nor is there so much variety as to confuse. There is not much practical difference between Tokio and Tokyo; Ieyasu and Iyeyasu. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the History of Japan Europeans and Americans, however, have failed as yet to appreciate the essential worth of Japan's civilisation. Some foreigners, it is true, speak highly of Japanese fine art, praising Japan as a country devoted to art; but the works that they admire are not always essentially character istic of Japan, nor are they representative works of Japanese fine arts. The number of foreigners aware of the existence of an influential literature in Japan is extremely limited. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Japan Our nearest neighbor across the Pacific has been reckoned among the foremost nations of the earth ever since, in the late war with China, she humiliated that vast but inert empire. Japan will have a voice in the future destiny of Asiatic countries, and in that of the islands of the Pacific. Our schoolbooks on geography and general history touch but lightly upon the Japanese Empire, and it is for the purpose of enabling children to obtain a correct idea of the people, and of the impulses leading to the rapid progress of the past quarter of a century, that "The Story of Japan" has been written. It was deemed essential to explain repeatedly the key to the history of Japan and to the reforms of our time, by noticing the overpowering influence of the samurai of old, who were and still are the makers of the nation. With a very few exceptions, the nobles of Japan have been wholly dependent upon their leading samurai, who, in turn, have been influenced by the ablest of their peers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Impressions of Japan The object I have had in view in writing these pages has been not merely to give a description of my journeys through Japan, but to put on record some impressions of the development of the Japanese. The changes which that country has undergone during the last decade have been so rapid and radical, that it would have been impossible within the limits of a single volume to give any adequate idea of their number or nature, for many of the topics touched on would require a volume to themselves. The greatest change of all seemed to have taken place in the country's Art, which twenty years ago was its chief and most distinguishing glory; and I have tried to show the reasons for that deterioration. Book Synopsis Japan in Print by : Mary Elizabeth Berry
Download or read book Japan in Print written by Mary Elizabeth Berry and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2006-02-16 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A quiet revolution in knowledge separated the early modern period in Japan from all previous time. After 1600, self-appointed investigators used the model of the land and cartographic surveys of the newly unified state to observe and order subjects such as agronomy, medicine, gastronomy, commerce, travel, and entertainment. They subsequently circulated their findings through a variety of commercially printed texts: maps, gazetteers, family encyclopedias, urban directories, travel guides, official personnel rosters, and instruction manuals for everything from farming to lovemaking. In this original and gracefully written book, Mary Elizabeth Berry considers the social processes that drove the information explosion of the 1600s. Inviting readers to examine the contours and meanings of this transformation, Berry provides a fascinating account of the conversion of the public from an object of state surveillance into a subject of self-knowledge. Japan in Print shows how, as investigators collected and disseminated richly diverse data, they came to presume in their audience a standard of cultural literacy that changed anonymous consumers into an "us" bound by common frames of reference. This shared space of knowledge made society visible to itself and in the process subverted notions of status hierarchy. Berry demonstrates that the new public texts projected a national collectivity characterized by universal access to markets, mobility, sociability, and self-fashioning.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Japanese Literature Writers on European literatures are entitled to take for granted, on the part of their readers, a previous acquaintance with the leading facts of the political and religious history of the country with which they are dealing. In the case of Japan, however, it has been thought not superfluous to add a few data of this kind without a knowledge of which it is impossible to under stand the course of the literary development. Download or read book The Color-Prints of Old Japan (Classic Reprint) written by William Dallam Armes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Color-Prints of Old Japan What are they? Is a question often asked by those looking for the first time at a collection of Japanese prints. To say that they are chromoxylographs, is to give an answer strictly accurate. But as this is more concise than simple, it may be well to say in non-technical, popular language that they are prints in colors from engraved wooden blocks, as many blocks and impressions ordinarily being required as there are colors. In Europe towards the end of the eighteenth century similar prints were produced, but as their reception by the public was not such as to encourage their makers, there was no development of the art comparable with that in Japan in the same century.
