Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of European Polity The book here offered to the public consists of lectures delivered in the University of Cambridge to students of history and of moral sciences. In arranging it for publication I have retained the lecture form, so as to avoid unnecessary changes of phraseology. It had of late years been more and more decidedly the author's view - as he has left on record - that a threefold treatment of politics is desirable for completeness: - first, an exposition analytical and deductive, such as he attempted in his work on the Elements of Politics; secondly, an evolutionary study of the development of polity within the historic period in Europe, beginning with the earliest known Graeco-Roman and Teutonic polity, and carried down to the modern state of Europe and its colonies as the last result of political evolution; thirdly, a comparative study of the constitutions of Europe and its colonies in connexion with the history of what may be called the constitution-making century which has just ended. The present book is an attempt at a treatment of political science from the second point of view. A description of its plan and scope will be found in the first lecture. In reading the book it should be borne in mind that it does not deal with theoretical politics as such. The theory of politics is treated in Elements of Politics, where the work and structure of the modern state are examined, and though the present book is complete in itself, it is intended that, for a full view of the subject, both books should be read. As a matter of fact, Mr. Sidgwick often gave a course of lectures on Political Theory along with the lectures contained in this book-some of his pupils attending both courses. With regard to the third point of view, the comparative study of present constitutions would, as Mr. Sidgwick himself said, to some extent overlap with this book, but only in its later part. Book excerpt: Excerpt from European Schools of History and Politics Whenever a faculty of instruction is entirely made up of men held aloof from the usual currents of public life, there is danger Of doctrinairism and pedantry, if not of cynicism. But this European instruction in political and social science seems to have steadily warded Off these evils. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Present Position of European: Politics, or Europe To these six essays, which have appeared in the fortnightly review, and which are here republished in book form, I have added. A concluding chapter dealing with the objections taken by writers in the Press to some of my statements and inferences. I owe my critics the frank acknowledgment that they have dealt more than kindly with my work, and I feel greatly indebted. To them for their courteous treatment. To those who have found my conclusions too dogmatic, I would put forward the excuse that in trying to come to a practical solution of practical problems, something like dogmatism can hardly be avoided. I have honestly written to the best of my ability that which I believed would serve the highest interests of my country; have sought to avoid all that might embitter international hatreds, and from first to last have thought solely of how I might best help England and Englishmen to accom plish their work in all parts of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The European Commonwealth: Problems Historical and Diplomatic The essays contained in this volume represent a selection from a much larger number contributed to quarterly and monthly Reviews during the last four years. They have been selected because, though not originally designed as steps in a coherent argument, they seem to possess a certain measure of unity and consistency. With one exception all have been written.since the outbreak of the war, and the single excep tion (chapter III) stands in at least as close a relation to recent events as the rest. Suggested though they were by successive aspects of the great struggle in which Europe and the world have been involved, the essays are the fruit of studies which have claimed a large portion of my time during the last thirty years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to World Politics AT the beginning of the World War I wrote a book about the relations among the great powers during the years immediately preceding the assassination at Serajevo. The New Map of Europe dealt particularly with Near Eastern problems and wars and with the foreign policies of Russia, austria-hungary, Germany, and Italy in the events affect ing the Balkan States, the Ottoman Empire, Persia, and the countries on the. African littoral of the Mediterranean. The purpose of the book was to attempt to explain how the relations among the great powers were vitally influenced by the conflict of interests that arose in their diplomatic and economic activities in the regions formerly under the exclusive domination of the Ottoman sultans. The recep tion accorded The New Map of Europe encouraged me to complete the survey of contemporary international rela tions by writing The New Map of Africa in 1916 and The New Map of Asia in 1919. The latter two volumes outlined the development of European overlordship in Africa and Asia. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The General Register of Politics and Literature in Europe and America, for the Year 1827: Preceded by a Memoir of the Right Honourable George Canning IN presenting the following Volume to the notice of the public, it may perhaps be me cessary to state, that the sole intention of the Editor has been, to give a condensed and popular view of the Political and Literary progress of the different countries in Europe and America. The rapid increase and dif fusion of knowledge, civilization, and libe ral sentiment, call for such a Work; and the Editor only laments, that, in the ensuing pages, the plan on which it shall in future be annually conducted is so feebly and im perfectly developed. From the late period at which it was determined that the present Volume should be prepared, it was impos sible to effect the, necessary arrangements; but it is hoped, next year, in one, or per haps two Volumes, to draw up an accurate and satisfactory Register of Politics, Science, and Literature. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern society emerged in the context of European colonialism and empire. So, too, did a distinctively modern social theory, laying the basis for most social theorising ever since. Yet colonialism and empire are absent from the conceptual understandings of modern society, which are organised instead around ideas of nation state and capitalist economy. Gurminder K. Bhambra and John Holmwood address this absence by examining the role of colonialism in the development of modern society and the legacies it has bequeathed. Beginning with a consideration of the role of colonialism and empire in the formation of social theory from Hobbes to Hegel, the authors go on to focus on the work of Tocqueville, Marx, Weber, Durkheim and Du Bois. As well as unpicking critical omissions and misrepresentations, the chapters discuss the places where colonialism is acknowledged and discussed – albeit inadequately – by these founding figures; and we come to see what this fresh rereading has to offer and why it matters. This inspiring and insightful book argues for a reconstruction of social theory that should lead to a better understanding of contemporary social thought, its limitations, and its wider possibilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greater European Governments The present work deals only with a very small part of the great subject of political parties. It is simply an attempt to study the relation between the development of parties and the mechanism of modern government, and other questions are referred to only so far as they have a bearing on the main theme. In carrying out this object, a systematic order of arrangement has been followed so far as practicable. The treatment of each country begins with a description of its chief institu tions, or political organization; this is followed by a sketch of its recent history, in order to show how the parties actually work; and, finally, an attempt is made to find the causes of the condition of party life. The investigation is limited to the principal countries where a division into two great parties does not prevail, and where there usually exists in its place a division into a number of more or less sharply defined political groups. This department of the subject seemed to separate itself naturally from the rest, and was selected mainly because it had been far less studied than the growth and in fluence of the by-party system that prevails generally in anglo-saxon countries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Europe Since Napoleon This brief history of the nineteenth century was written before the present European situation arose, and therefore with no special reference to the events of to-day. I hope, however, that it may supply a rapid outline of past events since the great Napoleonic struggle, which will throw some light upon the present. It is intended, primarily, for young people who have had no opportunity of following European politics during a long period of years, through the newspapers.
