Book excerpt: The Worry and Anxiety Questionnaire (WAQ) is an 11-item self-report screening questionnaire developed to measure the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). The purpose of this research was to revise the WAQ and conduct a preliminary investigation of the psychometric properties of the modified questionnaire in an English-speaking, non-clinical sample. The modification process included adding a definition for worry, simplifying the Likert scale qualifiers and consulting with experts in the field of anxiety disorders. There was evidence of sensitivity, specificity as well as convergent and discriminant validity; scores on the WAQ-II were more strongly associated with scores on a measure of worry than with scores on measures of other anxiety disorders, depression and hypochondriasis. In addition, there was evidence of test-retest reliability over a three-week period. The WAQ-II's usefulness in research and clinical practice is discussed.

The first ECNP congress took place in Copenhagen, May 1985, where a working group of European scientists within the field of psychopharmacology was elected to prepare a constituent ECNP congress in Brussels, 1987. Among the most active members of this group was Max Hamilton. At the second ECNP congress in Brussels Max Hamilton was elected as the first honorary member of the ECNP. When we received the message of his death we decided at once to arrange a Max Hamilton memorial symposium at the third ECNP congress, May 1989, in Gothenburg, Sweden. This monograph contains the proceedings of the Max Hamilton symposium which was chaired by the editors. The opening lecture of the third ECNP congress was a Max Hamilton lecture: "A life devoted to science in psychiatry" which was presented by Sir Martin Roth. It seemed obvious to include Sir Martin's lecture as the opening article of this monograph. Although G .E. Berrios was unable to participate in the ECNP congress we have found it logical to include his manuscript on "The Hamilton Depression Scale and the Numerical Description of the Symptoms of Depression" as another personal contribution to Max Hamilton and his rating scales.

Because of the variety of scientific fields In which statistical problems have arisen, the original contributions to this branch of applied mathematics are widely scattered In scientific literature. Most of the theory still exists only In original form. During the past few years the author has conducted a two-semester course at Princeton University for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students in which an attempt has been made to give the students an Introduction to the more recent develop ments in the mathematical theory of statistics. The subject matter for this course has been gleaned, for the most part, from periodical literature. An important topic which has been omitted is that of characteristic functions of random variables, which, when used in Fourier Inversions, provide a direct and powerful method of determining certain sampling distributions and other random variable distribu tions. However, moment generating functions are used they are more easily understood by students at this level and are almost as useful as characteristic functions as far as actual applications to mathematical statistics are concerned. Many specialized topics are omitted, such as intraclass, tetrachoric and other specialized correlation problems, aeml-lnvariants, renewal theory, the Behrens - Fisher problem, special transformations of population parameters and random variables, sampling from Poisson populations, etc. It is the experience of the author that an effective way for handling many of these specialized topics is to formulate them as problems for the students. If and when the present notes are revised and issued in permanent form, such problems will be Inserted at the ends of sections and chapters.
