Since the turn of the century Turkish Americans have been part of the fabric of major metropolitan cities such as Chicago, coming in three major migration waves, but are underrepresented in terms of research and scholarly analysis. I examine the role of migrant organizations, focusing on Turkish American migrant organizations in Chicago, and their effect on retention and maintenance of ethnicity. I am interested in the influences that preserve the Turkish connections within these migrant families and how the connections to heritage are lost or solidified among second generation Turkish Americans. Using Gans' notion of symbolic ethnicity, Portes & Rumbaut's work with the second generation, Sebnem Akçapar study of the role of migrant organizations and the importance of transnational space along with llhan Kaya's connections between space and identity among the Turkish American community, I posit that the role of the migrant organization and specifically it's connection to second generation Turkish Americans cannot be underestimated. Though there are other influential factors, the migrant organization's role seems crucial. Based on interviews with second-generation Turkish American subjects in Chicago, along with community stakeholders, it appears three factors influence second generation Turkish Americans connection to heritage, or in this case, Turkishness: family, migrant organization, and the perception of ethnic identity. As Turks are unique in both their physical presentation and religious backgrounds, they provide an intriguing demographic for this study as racial ambiguity, discrimination, and host culture lack of knowledge about Turks or Turkey are revealed as obstacles in their assimilation and integration.

However, their inclusion in urban public schools is a surprisingly slow process, and youth identities in newly industrialized countries remain largely neglected. Faced with monetary and institutional barriers, the majority of migrant youth attend low-quality or underperforming migrant schools, without access to the free compulsory education enjoyed by their urban counterparts. As a result, China’s citizen-building scheme and the sustainability of its labor-intensive economy have greatly impacted global economic restructuring. Using thorough ethnographic research, this volume examines the consequences of urban schooling and citizenship education through which school and social processes contribute to the production of unequal class relations. It explores the nexus of citizenship education and identity-forming practices of poor migrant youth in an attempt to foresee the new class formation in Chinese society. This volume opens up the "black box" of citizenship education in China and examines the effect of school and societal forces on social mobility and life trajectories.

The situation was reversed in the 1980s as a result of economic downturn in Brazil and labour shortages in Japan. This book examines the construction and reconstruction of the ethnic identities of people of Japanese descent, firstly in the process of emigration to Brazil up to the 1980s, and secondly in the process of return migration to Japan in the 1990s. The closed nature of Japan's social history means that the effect of return migration' can clearly be seen. Japan is to some extent a unique sociological specimen owing to the absence of any tradition of receiving immigrants. This book is first of all about migration, but also covers the important related issues of ethnic identity and the construction of ethnic communities. It addresses the issues from the dual perspective of Japan and Brazil. The findings suggest that mutual contact has led neither to a state of conflict nor to one of peaceful coexistence, but rather to an assertion of difference. It is argued that the Nikkeijin consent strategically to the social definitions imposed upon their identities and that the issue of the Nikkeijin presence is closely related to the emerging diversity of Japanese society.
