Book excerpt: The rapid international expansion of Chinese enterprises since the 1990s has attracted considerable attention in scholarly and policy circles. This book sheds fresh light on the phenomenon by explaining its determinants using the analytical lens of international business theory. The author focuses in particular on how Chinese firms interact with the institutional environment both at home and abroad. Drawing upon evidence and analysis from official statistics, Hinrich Voss concludes that the institutional change and market imperfections in China, combined with host country effects and the mediating role of trans-border social and business networks, are key facilitators of the rise of Chinese multinationals. This book provides the most up-to-date analysis of the determinants of Chinese outward foreign direct investments, and will appeal to academics with an interest in international business and management, as well as those researching China specifically and Asian business more broadly. Postgraduate students in international business, Asian business studies and international relations will find this book invaluable, as will practitioners dealing with Chinese multinational enterprises.

This volume brings together rigorous studies on the motivation, background, strategy, and impact of Chinese outward foreign direct investment and the emergence of Chinese multinational enterprises (MNEs). It is thus informative for the next wave of academic research on Chinese and emerging market MNEs in international business, political economy, economic geography and political sciences. Together with an original introduction by the editors, this valuable collection provides an important backdrop for academics who intend to understand emerging market MNEs in order to advise policymakers"--

Book excerpt: This study investigates the determinants of Chinese outward direct investment (ODI) and the extent to which three special explanations (capital market imperfections, special ownership advantages and institutional factors) need to be nested within the general theory of the multinational firm. We test our hypotheses using official Chinese ODI data collected between 1984 and 2001. We find Chinese ODI to be associated with high levels of political risk in, and cultural proximity to, host countries throughout, and with host market size and geographic proximity (1984-1991) and host natural resources endowments (1992-2001). We find strong support for the argument that aspects of the special theory help to explain the behaviour of Chinese multinational enterprises.

The book is to be recommended to students of international business for its elegant use of sophisticated econometric techniques and economic theory in exploring the role of FDI in a major emerging economy that hosts a substantial volume of FDI.' - V.N.Balasubramanyam, Lancaster University, UK China is now among the top hosts for foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows in the world. This fact, combined with recent developments in internationalisation and economic growth in China, ensures a perfect opportunity to identify the determinants and impact of FDI in the largest transition economy in the world.

The phenomenal impact of FDI in China and its (largely trade-related) consequences has been well documented and now there is a significant literature on the phenomenon of outward investment from China too. This book is an in depth study of the international business relationships of China covering both inward and outward foreign direct investment, its impact and related theoretical and policy issues. This volume of highly renowned author Peter Buckley's collected papers from 2005-8 continues his interest in the theory of international business (Section I) and policies towards foreign direct investment (FDI) (Section IV) but has a major concentration on China, both as regards outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) from China (Section II) and FDI in China (Section III).

This paper examines China's experience with FDI and identifies some lessons for other countries. Most of the factors explaining China's success have also been important in attracting FDI to other countries: market size, labor costs, quality of infrastructure, and government policies. FDI has contributed to higher investment and productivity growth, and has created jobs and a dynamic export sector. China's success, however, did not come without some pitfalls: an increasingly complex tax incentive system and growing regional income disparities. Accession to the WTO should broaden China's "opening up" policies and continue FDI's contributions to China's economy in the future.

Book excerpt: 'For readers looking for a comprehensive rigorously quantitative analysis of foreign direct investment (FDI) in China, there is no better work than Chunlai Chen's Foreign Direct Investment in China. In the book he analyzes a wide range of issues ranging from the contribution of FDI to China's growth to why FDI is concentrated in certain Chinese provinces and not others. Readers with an economics or statistical background will get the most out of the book, but it is accessible and informative for many others.' Dwight H. Perkins, Harvard University, US Foreign Direct Investment in China is one of the most comprehensive studies of FDI in China and provides a remarkable background of information on the evolution of China's FDI policies over the last 30 years. Chunlai Chen presents a compelling and thorough analysis of the leading theoretical explanations of FDI and a series of rigorous empirical examinations of the location determinants of FDI. He examines a comprehensive analysis of the differences in investment and production behaviour between the major investors as well as an in-depth investigation of the impacts of FDI on China's economy. This book is a highly focused and unique work of theoretical analysis and empirical study of FDI in China. It is a valuable and important reference for scholars and students who are interested in FDI in general and in Chinese economic studies in particular.

Book excerpt: Chinese outward foreign direct investment (FDI) has increased substantially in recent years. Though this has generated considerable interest in the motivations and drivers of Chinese investment abroad, there have been few systematic empirical studies of these questions. This paper performs an econometric analysis of the host country determinants of Chinese outward FDI in the period 2003-2006. The focus is in particular on institutional and natural resource-related determinants, and their interaction. We find that Chinese outward FDI is attracted to large markets, and to countries with a combination of large natural resources and poor institutions. Disaggregation shows that the former effect is related to OECD countries, whereas the latter interaction effect holds for non-OECD countries.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on China's fast-growing outward foreign direct investment (ODI) and discusses the underlying causes and profound effects of Chinese enterprises’ “going global.” The book includes eight chapters to analyze the basic characteristics of China's ODI manufacturing enterprises, examine the relationship between enterprise productivity and ODI, investigate the differences between state-owned enterprises and private enterprises in factor market, enterprise ownership and investment, analyze the overall effect of the foreign direct investment (FDI) and thereby the China–US bilateral investment treaties (BIT) on Chinese manufacturing sector in terms of productivity and profitability of the firms. The last chapter provides an overview of China’s three stages of economic reform and opening-up policy in the past four decades, and analyzes the reasons for China’s realization of the splendid economic achievements within such a short time and the main driving forces of China’s incremental international trade in different stages, and discusses the future tasks that would promote the country into a new stage of all-round opening-up. The book aims to illustrate the evolution of China’s opening-up design during the past decades and discuss several most important measures to build an all-around opening-up strategy. Based on these profound analyses, the book provides further policy implication for the sustainable development of China’s opening-up.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compared to inward foreign direct investment, outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) from China is a relatively new phenomenon. However, the volume of China's OFDI increased rapidly from 2004. There has been an increasing amount of literature on the motivations of China's OFDI, but few studies have focused on its location determinants. The present paper aims to fill this gap in the literature by focusing on two important location factors, natural resources and technology, which are the most important determinants of China's OFDI. We use a large panel dataset comprising 132 countries over the period 1991-2009 and the Tobit as well as the Heckman models to establish the relationship between the two location factors and China's OFDI. The empirical results suggest that although China's OFDI has been driven by the country's desire for a secure supply of natural resources and to attain advanced technology from the developed world, China's technology is also a critical attraction for the host developing economies.

Book excerpt: In less than three decades, China has grown from playing a negligible role in international trade to being one of the world's largest exporters, a substantial importer of raw materials, intermediate outputs, and other goods, and both a recipient and source of foreign investment. Not surprisingly, China's economic dynamism has generated considerable attention and concern in the United States and beyond. While some analysts have warned of the potential pitfalls of China's rise—the loss of jobs, for example—others have highlighted the benefits of new market and investment opportunities for US firms. Bringing together an expert group of contributors, China's Growing Role in World Trade undertakes an empirical investigation of the effects of China's new status. The essays collected here provide detailed analyses of the microstructure of trade, the macroeconomic implications, sector-level issues, and foreign direct investment. This volume's careful examination of micro data in light of established economic theories clarifies a number of misconceptions, disproves some conventional wisdom, and documents data patterns that enhance our understanding of China's trade and what it may mean to the rest of the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chinese outward direct investment (ODI) is growing rapidly in recent years. As an important phenomenon in the global economy, China’s ODI deserves more thorough analysis. This book looks at China’s ODI activities from multi-perspectives. With the rebalancing of China’s own structural growth and China’s shift towards a net capital exporter, her initiatives such as "One Belt One Road (OBOR)" have brought profound implications to the traditional super-sovereign or multilateral financial and investment cooperation mechanism. As her investment destinations and investment methods become more diversified and sophisticated, this book offers unique and refreshing insight into China’s ODI activities. The book covers the whole range of history and policy development of China’s ODI and analyses China’s ODI trends and characteristics in the recent years. It reviews China’s major policy changes after the Third Plenary Session of the 18th Central Committee of the Communist Party and how they may impact China’s ODI strategy and activities. The book addresses potential challenges and risks of rising ODI activities from practitioners’ perspective, and discusses how recipient countries may react and respond to the surge of Chinese capital. The book also offers policy implications and future research agenda in relation to the Chinese investments.

Book excerpt: This book explores the characteristics of China's outward foreign investment, its motivation, its sector distribution, and its geographical distribution in order to illustrate the current pattern of 'merchant-state dualism' in China's overseas foreign direct investment. Merchant-state dualism is a hybrid relationship between the state and society that maintains state control over merchants, while giving them some autonomy. By investigating the interactions between business and government elites to determine Chinese outward foreign investment, and by exploring the reasons for selecting certain foreign investments in light of internal political and economic concerns and the external effect of investing in politically sensitive countries, the book highlights the political underpinnings and calculations of China's foreign investment. It thus sheds light on current merchant-state dualism by concluding that merchant-state dualism is the most suitable model for explaining contemporary Chinese government-business relations.
