Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Haas (1883-1956) was born in Nuremberg and received his PhD. at Munich in 1910. He traveled widely throughout the Middle East and taught at universities in Germany, Iran and the United States. After a lifetime studying the thoughts and cultures of the East, he formulated the thesis laid out here in his final book: that East and West are not mere geographical or even racial distinctions, but two radically different types of consciousness, two fundamentally different orientations and ways of thinking. "Professor Haas attacks-and I believe, demolishes-an assumption that underlies almost all modern theories of history: that the minds of all human beings, if not defective or disordered, work in essentially the same way. ... [He] has, I believe, done for the study of comparative history what Böhr did for atomic physics." - Revilo Oliver

Download or read book The Indian Mind written by Charles A. Moore and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question, according to George P. Conger, noted authority on Indian philosophy, is not so much whether India can contribute as to whether the West is ready to receive. Here, in selected essays from the proceedings of the East-West philosophers' Conferences, is an examination by world authorities of one of the oldest, richest, most complicated, and most profound philosophical traditions of all time. The intimate relationship in the Indian perspective between philosophy and life is revealed. Common misunderstandings concerning Indian philosophy are exposed, and the marked kinship between India and the West is emphasized. The essays which comprise this book, since they are technical in themselves and written by experts in their special areas, meet the needs of the educated reader generally, as well as the technical expert.
Book Synopsis Irony of Theology and the Nature of Religious Thought by : Donald Wiebe
Download or read book Irony of Theology and the Nature of Religious Thought written by Donald Wiebe and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1990-12-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a careful re-evaluation of the works of Lévy-Bruhl, Wiebe establishes the coherence of Lévy-Bruhl's classic distinction between primitive, or mythopoeic, and scientific thought, maintaining that religious thinking is mythopoeic in nature while theology -- which thinks about religion -- is related to modern Western scientific thinking. The pre-Socratic philosophers, Wiebe shows, developed a form of rational thought radically different from the religious-mythopoeic thought that preceded it. Although Plato was concerned with recovery of the pre-philosophic wisdom of ancient Greece, he attempted this within a rational, philosophic structure. Wiebe argues that Christian thought, originally mythopoeic, changed rapidly under the influence of Hellenistic culture, and that the Platonization of Christianity introduced an element of philosophic thinking which would eventually undermine its mythopoeic essence. In clarifying the nature of religious thought and its relation to religion, Wiebe provides a sound basis for the development of a general theory of religion. While of particular interest to philosophers, theologians, and students and scholars of the study of religion, Wiebe's study draws upon sources as diverse as philosophy, history, anthropology, and sociology and will therefore interest anyone involved in these disciplines as well.
Download or read book East and West written by Y. J. Choi and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-12 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: East and West: Understanding the Rise of China by Y.J. Choi Innumerable articles and books have been written about East Asia and China since this part of the world has been catapulted into the center of the global economic scene. Unfortunately, most, if not all of them, are wide of the mark in terms of understanding the geographic and philosophical fundamentals of Eastern civilizations undergirding the rise of the East. The relative decline of the West appears to be inevitable as the ascendance of the East prompts a shift of the center of gravity from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Accordingly, we need to understand the East (and the West, for that matter) by freeing ourselves from the centuries-old habit of West-centrism. Neither in the West nor in the East do we find a paper written with a balanced approach regarding the two civilizations. Because of this, and thanks to his vast experience in both East and West, Ambassador Y.J. Choi was prompted to explain this epochal change by comparing the two civilizations on equal footing. His text constitutes the very first book attempting an objective, neutral and balanced comparison of ancient Eastern and European/Mediterranean civilizations, including their influence on and implications for contemporary events.
