Book excerpt: A study of neutron capture gamma ray analysis of sulfur in coal using californium-252 as a neutron source is reported. Both internal and external target geometries are investigated. The facility designed for and used in this study is described. The external target geometry is found to be inappropriate because of the low thermal neutron flux at the sample location, which must be outside the biological shielding. The internal target geometry is found to have a sufficient thermal neutron flux, but an excessive gamma ray background. A water filled plastic facility, rather than the paraffin filled steel one used in this study, is suggested as a means of increasing flexibility and decreasing the beackground in the internal target geometry.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing. house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 25 (thesis year 1980) a total of 10,308 theses titles from 27 Canadian and 214 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 25 reports theses submitted in 1980, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development of techniques of neutron-induced gamma spectrometry for non-invasive on-line instrumental analysis of coal for application to process streams in coal conversion plants is described. Using /sup 252/Cf sources and Ge(Li) detector based spectrometers, it appears feasible to monitor most of the elements in coal present in concentrations of 0.1 weight percent or more, including S, Fe, Si, Ca, Al, N, H, Ti, Cl, Na, K, and Mg. Correlations between gamma spectral response and element densities useful for quantitative analysis have been obtained for most of these elements. A substantially automated unattended laboratory prototype coal analyzer based on a /sup 252/Cf neutron source now continuously analyzes the gamma ray spectra from coal contained inside pipe-simulating cylindrical metal containers and prints out composition information on command. 15 figures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A facility was designed and subsequently has been built for the utilization of californium-252 in research on moisture, density, and other properties of soil and rock in relation to their engineering characteristics. Preliminary testing shows good correlations between neutron radiation and the quantification and distribution of moisture both in soil slices and steel-encased undisturbed soil samples. Such data, when used in conjunction with X-ray studies, are valuable in furthering the knowledge and understanding of soil and rock behavior. Continued research will refine techniques for more detailed study of properties of earth materials. Detailed plans of the facility and its components are given in Appendix A.

Our recent work with fast neutrons from a neutron generator suggests that this source may be preferable for determination of carbon and oxygen in the coal.
