Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cranfield International Symposium Series, Volume 10: Combustion in Advanced Gas Turbine Systems covers the proceedings of an International Propulsion Symposium, held at the College of Aeronautics in Cranfield in April 1967. The book focuses on the processes, methodologies, reactions, and transformations involved in chemical combustion. The selection first takes a look at the design considerations in advanced gas turbine combustion chambers, combustion in industrial gas turbines, and combustion development on the Rolls-Royce Spey engine. Discussions focus on mechanical condition, carbon-formation and exhaust smoke, system requirements, fuel oil ash deposition and corrosion, combustion-system design, performance requirements, types of primary zone, fuel injection, and combustion chamber types. The text then examines subsonic flow flameholder studies using a low pressure simulation technique; stabilization of hydrogen diffusion flames by flame-holders in supersonic flow at low stagnation temperatures; and augmentation systems for turbofan engines. The book takes a look at a consideration of the possible use of refractory ceramic materials for advanced combustion chamber design; cooling of flame tubes by steam injection; and combustion problems in the massive steam injection gas turbine. The selection is a valuable source of information for researchers interested in the process of combustion in advanced gas turbine systems.

Book excerpt: Industrial Gas Turbines: Performance and Operability explains important aspects of gas turbine performance such as performance deterioration, service life and engine emissions. Traditionally, gas turbine performance has been taught from a design perspective with insufficient attention paid to the operational issues of a specific site. Operators are not always sufficiently familiar with engine performance issues to resolve operational problems and optimise performance.Industrial Gas Turbines: Performance and Operability discusses the key factors determining the performance of compressors, turbines, combustion and engine controls. An accompanying engine simulator CD illustrates gas turbine performance from the perspective of the operator, building on the concepts discussed in the text. The simulator is effectively a virtual engine and can be subjected to operating conditions that would be dangerous and damaging to an engine in real-life conditions. It also deals with issues of engine deterioration, emissions and turbine life. The combined use of text and simulators is designed to allow the reader to better understand and optimise gas turbine operation. Discusses the key factors in determining the perfomance of compressors, turbines, combustion and engine controls Explains important aspects of gas and turbine perfomance such as service life and engine emissions Accompanied by CD illustrating gas turbine performance, building on the concepts discussed in the text

This book was released on 2014-09-12 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of a comprehensive textbook that introduces turbomachinery and gas turbines through design methods and examples. This comprehensive textbook is unique in its design-focused approach to turbomachinery and gas turbines. It offers students and practicing engineers methods for configuring these machines to perform with the highest possible efficiency. Examples and problems are based on the actual design of turbomachinery and turbines. After an introductory chapter that outlines the goals of the book and provides definitions of terms and parts, the book offers a brief review of the basic principles of thermodynamics and efficiency definitions. The rest of the book is devoted to the analysis and design of real turbomachinery configurations and gas turbines, based on a consistent application of thermodynamic theory and a more empirical treatment of fluid dynamics that relies on the extensive use of design charts. Topics include turbine power cycles, diffusion and diffusers, the analysis and design of three-dimensional free-stream flow, and combustion systems and combustion calculations. The second edition updates every chapter, adding material on subjects that include flow correlations, energy transfer in turbomachines, and three-dimensional design. A solutions manual is available for instructors. This new MIT Press edition makes a popular text available again, with corrections and some updates, to a wide audience of students, professors, and professionals.

Book excerpt: With regard to both the environmental sustainability and operating efficiency demands, modern combustion research has to face two main objectives, the optimization of combustion efficiency and the reduction of pollutants. This book reports on the combustion research activities carried out within the Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 568 “Flow and Combustion in Future Gas Turbine Combustion Chambers” funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). This aimed at designing a completely integrated modeling and numerical simulation of the occurring very complex, coupled and interacting physico-chemical processes, such as turbulent heat and mass transport, single or multi-phase flows phenomena, chemical reactions/combustion and radiation, able to support the development of advanced gas turbine chamber concepts

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gas turbine is the engine at the heart of the power plant that produces electric current. A gas turbine, also called a combustion turbine, is a type of internal combustion engine. It has an upstream rotating compressor coupled to a downstream turbine, and a combustion chamber in between. The basic operation of the gas turbine is similar to that of the steam power plant except that air is used instead of water. Fresh atmospheric air flows through a compressor that brings it to higher pressure. Energy is then added by spraying fuel into the air and igniting it so the combustion generates a high-temperature flow. This high-temperature high-pressure gas enters a turbine, where it expands down to the exhaust pressure, producing a shaft work output in the process. The turbine shaft work is used to drive the compressor and other devices such as an electric generator that may be coupled to the shaft. A gas turbine convert natural gas or other liquid fuels to mechanical energy. This energy then drives a generator that produces electrical energy. It is electrical energy that moves along power lines to homes and businesses. To generate electricity, the gas turbine heats a mixture of air and fuel at very high temperatures, causing the turbine blades to spin. The spinning turbine drives a generator that converts the energy into electricity. The purpose of the gas turbine determines the design so that the most desirable energy form is maximized. Gas turbines are used to power aircraft, trains, ships, electrical generators, and tanks. This book, Efficiency, Performance and Robustness of Gas Turbines, covers a wide range of issues related to analysis of gas turbines and their engineering applications. Gas turbine engine defect diagnostic and condition monitoring systems, operating conditions of open gas turbines, reduction of jet mixing noise, recovery of exhaust heat from gas turbines, appropriate materials and coatings, ultra micro gas turbines and applications of gas turbines are discussed.

This book was released on 1968 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basic descriptions and classifications are given of combustion chambers currently used in stationary gas turbine units manufactured in the Soviet Union. It is pointed out that in the Soviet Union, annular combustion chambers are not used in stationary gas turbines. The most commonly used combustion chambers are provided with fuel nozzle swirl cups, telescopic flame tubes, and various cooling modes. An analysis of published experimental results indicates that the combustion process in combustion chambers with a single swirl cup is satisfactory only when the flame tube diameter does not exceed a certain maximum magnitude. When the diameter exceeds 1000-1200 mm, the turbulence diminishes suddenly, resulting in a flame lag and a reduction in combustion efficiency. For this reason, large combustion chambers are provided with multiple swirl cups. Chambers are usually equipped with either three or five swirl cups. Very intensive combustion of liquid fuel was noted in chambers provided with five swirl cups. Combustion chamber parameters and designations of Soviet stationary gas turbines are presented in tabulated form. (Author).
