Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Design and Construction of Metallic Bridges This book is based upon the ninth edition of The Stresses in Bridge and Roof Trusses, Arched Ribs, and Suspension Bridges, by one of the Authors of this volume. T hat work, however, has been so thoroughly rewritten and such a large amount of new matter has been introduced that a new title has been' adopted. It has been the intention of the Authors to prepare a comprehensive book covering all types of trusses used to a material extent in American bridge practice, or at least all trusses forming the basis of that practice. In con formity With this plan, the most advanced methods of stress computations, as well as those that are older, have been employed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Design of Simple Steel Bridges IN writing this book my idea has been to revise and rearrange my former book, entitled Manual of Bridge Design, which has been used for some considerable time as a text-book on this subject by the Royal Engineers at the School of Military Engineering, Chatham. I have endeavoured to depart from the generality of text books, and to keep ever before the student the practical aim or object for which he is striving. I have also tried always to illustrate theoretical deductions and conclusions with examples from actual practice. The book is full of practical examples and illustrations, and contains many details of all sorts connected with bridge work. I have confined this work to simple bridges. On all hands text-books by celebrated men abound which investigate most thoroughly every conceivable kind of structure or girder, books which go into deep mathematics, and which at their conclusion do not venture to advise any particular course of action under any set circumstances, but leave the engineer to decide for himself. In this book I have therefore avoided any deep mathematics; a graphic solution of every problem is given where such a solution is useful, and I. Have in simple language endeavoured to advise or lay down a course of action in almost every case. And although the course of action recommended may sometimes be open to question as to whether it is the best, yet I think it is always good. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book on Roofs and Bridges: Bridge Design The present edition has been entirely rewritten in order to bring the subject fully up to date, for the changes in bridge design during the past eight years have been remarkable. The rapid increase in live loads on the principal railroads in this country has necessitated an unusually large amount of new construction to replace the old bridges, which were designed for much lighter traffic. The extensive scale on which this work had to be done led to a general revision of specifications and to careful attention to the design of details so as to secure greater stiffness as well as strength in the new structures. These changes include the introduction of some new forms of details; the elimination, as far as practicable, of adjustable members; the entire superseding of wrought iron by steel; the substitution Of riveted trusses for pin-connected trusses in the shorter spans; and increased care in designing the joints so as to reduce the secondary stresses to a minimum. In the descriptions Of the details of plate-girder and truss bridges, introduced in Chapters VI, VIII, and XI, only those are given which may be properly claimed as standard in the best recent practice. Special attention is called to the new feature of carefully selected references to engineering periodi cals where more extended descriptions and applications of various details may be found. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Suspension Bridges: Their Design, Construction and Erection This book has been planned to supply the needs of practicing engineers who may have problems in estimating, designing or constructing suspension bridges, and of students who wish to prepare themselves for work in this field. The aim has been to produce an up-to-date, practical handbook on the subject, distinguished by simplicity of treatment and convenience of application. In the first division, on Stresses in Suspension Bridges, the formulas have been corrected to conform, to modern practice, and reduced to their simplest and most convenient form for direct application by the designing engineer. The formulas are supplemented by curves for their expeditious solution, and by alternative graphical methods for determining stresses. The second division, on Types and Details of Construction, presents data and illustrations to assist the designing engineer in the selection of type of suspension bridge and in the determination of proportions, specifications, and details for the various elements of suspension construction. The third division, on Typical Design Computations, gives numerical examples of suspension designs of different types worked out by methods that have proved most efficient in the author's practice. The designing engineer will find here the formulas to be used in each successive step of the design, and the practical methods of applying them, with tabulations, graphs and short-cuts. The fourth division, on Erection of Suspension Bridges, describes and illustrates the successive stages in the erection of representative structures, from towers to trusses. The operations of stringing wire cables are presented in detail, with an outline of the computations for adjustment and control. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Artistic Bridge Design: A Systematic Treatise on the Design of Modern Bridges According to Aesthetic Principles A lack of artistic treatment is the greatest fault of American bridges. These structures are worthy of greater thought and study because they are usually such conspicuous objects in the landscape. The lack of art is no doubt partly due to the dearth of literature on the subject and the difficulty in securing good illustrations, and it is hoped that this book will assist in producing better results. The most important work in connection with any great building enterprise is the preparation of the design, for on this the success or failure of the project depends. If the design is faulty, the money, time and thought spent on its construction are largely wasted, and all the labor of engineers, contractors and artisans is lost. If the design is lacking in beauty, the strue ture may remain for centuries as a mockery to its originators, unless fortunately it should collapse through structural weak ness and give place to another one, more worthy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridges are great symbols of mankind’s conquest of space. They are a monument to his vision and determination, but these alone are not enough. An appreciation of the mathematical theories underlying bridge design is essential to resist the physical forces of nature and gravity. The object of this book is to explain firstly the nature of the problems associated with the building of bridges with steel as the basic material, and then the theories that are available to tackle them. The book covers: a technological history of the different types of iron and steel bridges the basic properties of steel loads on bridges from either natural or traffic-induced forces the process and aims of design based on limit state and statistical probability concepts buckling behaviour of various components and large-deflection behaviour of components with initial imperfections detailed guidance on the design of plate and box girder bridges together with some design examples The Second Edition includes a completely new chapter on the history and design of cable-stayed bridges, the various types of cable used for them and their method of construction, and it addresses many of the changes introduced in the latest version of the British Standard Design Code for steel bridges, BS 5400: Part 3:2000.
