Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sufism is the esoteric aspect of Islam. Its purpose is to convey direct knowledge of the eternal. The Sufis impart knowledge through lineages that go back to the Prophet Muhammud. In these various Sufi orders, the zikr, the repetition of "la illaha illa'llah" (There is no God but God), is part of initiation ceremonies. In fact, the method of the Sufis is zikr, and the manner in which zikr is performed is the essential difference among the various orders. The Dervishes repeat their zikr as they turn. They empty their hearts of all but the thought of God and whirl in the ecstatic movements of His breath.
Book Synopsis Frontiers of Violence in North-East Africa by : Richard J. Reid
Download or read book Frontiers of Violence in North-East Africa written by Richard J. Reid and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-03-24 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northeast Africa has one of the richest histories in the world, and yet also one of the most violent. Richard Reid offers an historical analysis of violent conflict in northeast Africa through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, incorporating the Ethiopian and Eritrean highlands and their escarpment and lowland peripheries, stretching between the modern Eritrean Red Sea coast and the southern and eastern borderlands of present day Ethiopia. Sudanese and Somali frontiers are also examined insofar as they can be related to ethnic, political, and religious conflict, and the violent state- and empire-building processes which have defined the region since c.1800. Reid argues that this modern warfare is not solely the product of modern political 'failure', but rather has its roots in a network of frontier zones which are both violent and creative. Such borderlands have given rise to markedly militarised political cultures which are rooted in the violence of the nineteenth century, and which in recent decades are manifest in authoritarian systems of government. Reid thus traces the history of Amhara and Tigrayan imperialisms to the nationalist and ethnic revolutions which represented the march of volatile borderlands on the hegemonic centre. He suggests a new interpretation of Ethiopian and Eritrean history, arguing that the key to understanding the region's turbulent present lies in an appreciation of the role of the armed, and politically fertile, frontier in its deeper past.

Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of African Colonial Conflicts [2 volumes] by : Timothy J. Stapleton
Download or read book Encyclopedia of African Colonial Conflicts [2 volumes] written by Timothy J. Stapleton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-11-07 with total page 818 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two volumes introduce the history of colonial wars in Africa and illustrate why African countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Somalia, and Sudan continue to experience ethnic, political, and religious violence in the early 21st century. This sweeping study examines the wars of colonial conquest fought in Africa during the 19th and early 20th centuries. From Britain's efforts to wrest control of the Sudan from military leader Muhammad Ahmad al-Mahdi, to Italy's decisive defeat at the Battle of Adowa in Ethiopia, to Leopold II's brutal reign over the Belgian Congo, the work surveys the devastation reaped upon the continent by colonization and illustrates how its combative influence continues to resonate in Africa today. Written by scholars in the fields of history and politics, this complete reference includes entries on wars, campaigns, rebellions, battles, leaders, and organizations. The work delves into key historical periods including the "Scramble for Africa" (ca.1880 to 1910); early European colonial wars in Africa, such as the Dutch in the Cape and the Portuguese in Angola and Mozambique; and African rebellions against the early colonial state in the 1890s and early 1900s. Entries feature prominent events and personalities as well as lesser-known occurrences and players.

Book excerpt: This account of the Sufi order of Mevlevi dervishes and its founder, the poet and mystic Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi, presents the esoteric wisdom of the Sufis as it has been handed down from the great teachers of the past without alienating the modern reader. In addition to Rumi's life story, accounts of dervishes past and present are included. Featured are excerpts from Rumi's poetry, teachings of other Sufi masters, descriptions of the dervish lodges and the symbolism of the dervish ceremony, and an overview of the music that accompanies the Mevlevis' dances. Haunting, evocative pictures of the order's dancers clad in traditional dress provide a glimpse of ceremonies usually closed to the public.

Download or read book Dervish written by Philip Warner and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2010-04-14 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dervish is the vivid and colourful story of one of the more remarkable episodes in the high Empire period of British history. The Mahdis rising in the Sudan in the 1880s starting as a localized Holy War against the decadent Turkish/Egyptian overlords, engulfed a million square miles of arid territory and forced the British Liberal Government to get involved after the early disasters of the Hicks expedition and Gordons death at Khartoum. The narrative, which makes excellent use of the first-hand diaries and reports, including those of Rider Haggards brother Andrew and of Father Ohrwalder (the Austrian missionary who spent ten years of captivity in the Mahdis camp), brilliantly describes the growth and strength of the Mahdist movement and the extraordinary devotion and discipline of the Dervish troops. Facing such opponents with stoic endurance were the British, Egyptian and Sudanese Negro soldiers, and the resulting military engagements evoked amazing feats of courage and derring-do on both sides. The Dervish Empire outlasted the Mahdi by thirteen years. It ended in the battle of Omdurman and Kitcheners reconquest of the Sudan, which was well supported by Reginald Wingates military intelligence operations. It lasted a comparatively brief span of time, but it had been established at the expense not only of the neighbouring Abyssinians but also of the European white man, at a time when Britain was approaching the zenith of its imperial power.Philip Warner is author of Passchendale and The Zeebrugge Raid and numerous other first rate histories. He wrote the biographies of Auchinleck and Horrocks. He was the military obituary writer of The Daily Telegraph for many years. In WW2 he was a POW of the Japanese for 1,000 days. He died in 2000.
