Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thougtit that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 31 (thesis year 1986) a total of 11 ,480 theses titles trom 24 Canadian and 182 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base tor these titles reported will greatly enhance the value ot this important annual reterence work. While Volume 31 reports theses submitted in 1986, on occasion, certain univer sities do re port theses submitted in previousyears but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: In this research, this history of important diagenetic phases of the Smackover Formation is investigated the history of using petrography, stable isotope geochemistry, cathodoluminescence, and fluid inclusion microthermometry. The focus is a study of three Smackover fields in the East Gulf Coastal Plain of the United States, namely the Appleton, Little Cedar Creek and Big Escambia Creek Fields in Alabama. Each of these represents a unique depositional or structural environment and each had materials, such as rock cores and chips and geophysical well logs available through the Geological Survey of Alabama and the State Oil and Gas Board of Alabama. A paragenetic sequence is established for each field from observations of core, thin section and/or cathodoluminescence, and interpretations of the diagenetic history are supported using geochemistry and fluid inclusion microthermometry. Early dolomitization was widespread and began as hypersaline brines that developed during the Buckner anhydrite formation descended into the Smackover. Later, during a marine transgression, the platform was flooded and this dilution created leached grains and moldic pores that are commonly observed. Following this, extensive periods of burial and recrystallization creates the mottled textures and zoned crystals evidenced in cathodoluminescence and the wide spread of temperature ranges reflected by the isotope and fluid inclusion data. Data from over 500 measurements of microthermometry analysis from two-phase fluid inclusions are presented from the three fields and shows minimum temperatures for the dolomitizing fluid begin at around 50℗ʻC, with salinities for the system that range from 13 to 27 wt% NaCl. Eutectic melting temperatures from fluid inclusions are used to characterize the composition of the brine in more detail and indicate complex and highly saline dolomitizing fluids with initial melting temperatures (mean -31 ℗ʻC) occurring far below a pure H2O-NaCl brine system, signifying the influence of MgCl2, and other salts such as CaCl2 and Kl.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Smackover Formation is a highly productive producer of hydrocarbons throughout the United States Gulf Coast region. More than four million barrels of oil and five billion cubic feet of gas have been produced from the Smackover Formation in the Barnett Field in southwest Alabama. Paleohighs formed during the Paleozoic and salt tectonic relief features control sediment distribution of the Smackover Formation in southwest Alabama. The Smackover in Barnett Field is entirely dolomitized, but the carbonate texture at the time of deposition is still visible in thin section. The Smackover carbonates in Barnett Field were deposited in the near-shore area of a carbonate ramp environment. The Smackover may be divided into three lithologic facies in this area; an ooid grainstone, oncolite packstone, and algal mudstone. Smackover deposition is interpreted to represent a period of eustatic sea level rise. Modern interpretations suggest the Smackover may have been deposited in three sequences. The Smackover in Barnett Field appears to represent a single stratigraphic sequence. The distribution of the three Smackover facies in Barnett Field suggests the formation was deposited during a sea level highstand following a rapid sea level rise. Accommodation of Smackover sediment led to a relative shallowing of the near-shore environment. The shallowing caused a prograding infilling pattern into the basin. The Smackover facies correlate to characteristic porosity and permeability values making the ability to predict the occurrence of a single facies vital to petroleum exploration.
