Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When I made love with him, I used a great deal of energy and afterwards I felt and started not to care about anything that would normally bother me. I allowed myself to feel the joy inside of myself. I felt renewed every time I had experienced deep passion with the man he was. Obviously, there was a direct link between chastity, religion and political orthodoxy. I began to realize that in order to sustain fear and lunatic madness that one has to 'bottle' some powerful instinct and use it as a driving force. This was my mother still alive within me pushing and forcing me to honor the faith and cultural imperatives. ...from "The Affair". This is a gutsy revelation, raw yet tender. We know whereof Sandra speaks. This author belongs to her work.

Download or read book Back from the Deep written by Carl P Lavo and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2012-04-15 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This epic World War II saga follows the USS Squalus and Sculpin as they play out their dramatic destinies in the Pacific. The author, a seasoned journalist, re-creates their entire perilous journey. The Squalus sank during a test dive in 1939, but thirty-three trapped crewmen were saved thanks to the revolutionary use of the McCann diving bell. The Sculpin's role in that historic rescue is just the first of many incongruous twists of fate that brought the two subs together after the Squalus was salvaged and rechristened the Sailfish. Carl LaVO skillfully weaves together the tragic loss of the Sculpin to a Japanese destroyer with the frenetic wrath of its sister sub. Their intertwined fates come to an eerie climax as the Sailfish unleashes a ten-hour attack on the Japanese aircraft carrier Chuyo amid a raging typhoon, unwittingly killing twenty-two of the forty-three Americans captured from the sunken Sculpin. The saga comes to a close with a moving description of the surviving Sculpin crewmen as they face incredible hardship, torture, and disease as POWs in Japan. This book is certain to instill a renewed appreciation for the intrepid men and stealthy boats that were the soul of the Pacific campaign's silent service.

Book Synopsis An Assessment of the Science Proposed for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) by : National Research Council
Download or read book An Assessment of the Science Proposed for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-03-02 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the big bang theory, our Universe began in a state of unimaginably high energy and density, contained in a space of subatomic dimensions. At that time, unlike today, the fundamental forces of nature were presumably unified and the particles present were interacting at energies not attainable by present-day accelerators. Underground laboratories provide the conditions to investigate processes involving rare phenomena in matter and to detect the weak effects of highly elusive particles by replicating similar environments to those once harnessed during the earliest states of the Earth. These laboratories now appear to be the gateway to understanding the physics of the grand unification of the forces of nature. Built to shield extremely sensitive detectors from the noise of their surroundings and the signals associated with cosmic rays, underground facilities have been established during the last 30 years at a number of sites worldwide. To date, the United States' efforts to develop such facilities have been modest and consist primarily of small underground laboratories. However, the U.S. underground community has pushed for larger underground facilities on the scale of major laboratories in other countries. An Assessment of the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) addresses this matter by evaluating the major physics questions and experiments that could be explored with the proposed DUSEL. Measuring the potential impact, this assessment also examines the broader effects of the DUSEL in regards to education and public outreach, and evaluates the need associated with developing U.S. programs similar to science programs in other regions of the world.
