Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pioneer in the fields of astrophysics and astro-archeology, J. Norman Lockyer believed that ancient Egyptian monuments were constructed "in strict relation to the stars." In this celebrated study, he explores the relationship between astronomy and architecture in the age of the pharaohs. Lockyer addresses one of the many points already extensively investigated by Egyptologists: the chronology of the kings of Egypt. All experts are in accord regarding the identity of the first monarch, but they cannot agree upon the dates of his reign within a thousand years. The author contends that by applying a knowledge of astronomy to the actual site orientation of the region's pyramids and temples, accurate dating can be achieved. In order to accomplish this, Lockyer had to determine the level of the ancient Egyptian ideas of astronomy. Some of his inferences have been invalidated by subsequent scholarship, but many of his other conclusions stand firm and continue to provide sensational leads into contemporary understanding of archaic astronomy.

Book excerpt: A full-color exploration of the encoded ceiling at the Temple of Dendera • Draws on more than 5,000 high-resolution photographs taken by the author to reconstruct the complete ceiling of the portico of the Temple of Hathor at Dendera • Reveals in detail how each panel represents celestial cycles of time from the Precession of the Equinoxes to the annual cycles of life found along the Nile • Explains each panel’s astronomical significance from the ancient Egyptian perspective as well as examining the myths, gods, and goddesses depicted Egypt is famous for its pyramids, the Sphinx, the temples at Luxor, and the Valley of the Kings, but 40 miles north of Luxor lies the best-preserved temple complex in all of Egypt: The Temple of Dendera, known for the famous “Zodiac of Dendera” now housed in the Louvre Museum. Within the portico leading into the Hathor temple at Dendera is a little-known outstanding achievement of humanity: an extensive colored bas-relief—larger than the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel—meticulously encoded with the sophisticated astronomical knowledge of ancient Egypt. Drawing on more than 5,000 high-resolution photographs he has taken at the Temple of Dendera, photographer and computer scientist José María Barrera presents a complete full-color photographic reconstruction of the ceiling of the pronaos at Dendera and reveals in detail how each panel represents celestial cycles of time from the precession of the equinoxes to the annual cycles of life found along the Nile. He explains the meaning of the layout of the ceiling as it relates to the present, the past, eternity, the hours of the day, the phases of the moon, the constellations used in ancient Egyptian astronomy, the solar year, and the Great Year. The author provides detailed analysis of each panel, including close-up photos, and explains each panel’s astronomical and spiritual significance from the ancient Egyptian perspective as well as examining the myths, gods, and goddesses depicted. He also includes an appendix exploring the meaning and symbology of ancient Egyptian iconography. Allowing you to experience the vivid details of this ancient work of art and science, this photographic exploration also re-creates the sense of spiritual awe and power the Temple of Dendera radiates to its visitors, whether today or millennia ago.

Book excerpt: Pyramids had a specific function and this book endeavours to detail exactly how and when they operated. Pharaoh Khufu built what probably stands as the greatest ever construction that humans have produced (given the tech constraints of the time); the Great pyramid. Its accuracy, and size are just awe-inspiring; it was the tallest building in the World until the Cathedrals of Europe arrived on the scene! According to ancient historians though, Khufu was never buried there and when the Arabs first broke in to the upper chambers in 820AD, they found the sarcophagus empty! It had been ceremonially sealed without the king inside!! Are we expected to believe that they built the World’s greatest ever construction as a tomb, then sealed it forever, but without the body of the king? Isn’t that a little odd? The reality is, it was meant for something much greater than his tomb. What purpose does such a grand resting place for your body really fulfil? It appeases the ego of the living king, but thereafter, it achieves nothing. A hole in the ground can preserve the body just as well, and in fact it probably has, for that’s where most believe Khufu was buried––in an as yet undiscovered shaft tomb. Very unceremonious for someone who had such a magnificent structure built! Khufu’s father was King Snefru; he built the World’s two tallest buildings at the time. We could reason that one was to be his tomb, but then what was the other one for? The forgotten story of the pyramids is that they were principally built for the king’s Heb Sed festival, the most important event in his lifetime––should he live long enough to perform it. He had to wait 30 years before he could participate in this magical ceremony, so he spent 20 odd years building a structure that was vital for its success. After 30 years at the helm, the king was supposed to be ritually killed. Heb Sed enabled him to avoid this dire fate. His reign would be extended if he passed the rigorous tests involved in the ceremonies, but not only that, he would also become a living incarnation of the Sun-god. This ensured that he would live on for all eternity. Pyramids weren’t built for vanity, instead they were vital mechanisms for achieving these ends and so every king in the Old Kingdom constructed a pyramid to facilitate his immortality. This is the third and final book in the series, to be read after 'Architecture of Ra' and ‘Tombs of the Gods’.
