Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Post-Darwinian Controversies offers an original interpretation of Protestant responses to Darwin after 1870, viewing them in a transatlantic perspective and as a constitutive part of the history of post-Darwinian evolutionary thought. The impact of evolutionary theory on the religious consciousness of the nineteenth century has commonly been seen in terms of a 'conflict' or 'warfare' between science and theology. Dr. Moore's account begins by discussing the polemical origins and baneful effects of the 'military metaphor', and this leads to a revised view of the controversies based on an analysis of the underlying intellectual struggle to come to terms with Darwin. The middle section of the book distinguishes the 'Darwinism' of Darwin himself amid the main currents of post-Darwinian evolutionary thought, and is followed by chapters which examine the responses to Darwin of twenty-eight Christian controversialists, tracing the philosophical and theological lineage of their views. The paradox that emerges - that Darwin's theory was accepted in substance only by those whose theology was distinctly orthodox theology and of other evolutionary theories with liberal and romantic theological speculation.

Book excerpt: Several years ago Lord Rosebery founded, in the University of Edinburgh, a lectureship on “The Philosophy of Natural History,” and I was invited by the Senatus to deliver the lectures. This invitation I accepted, and subsequently constituted the material of my lectures the foundation of another course, which was given in the Royal Institution, under the title “Before and after Darwin.” Here the course extended over three years—namely from 1888 to 1890. The lectures for 1888 were devoted to the history of biology from the earliest recorded times till the publication of the “Origin of Species” in 1859; the lectures for 1889 dealt with the theory of organic evolution up to the date of Mr. Darwin’s death, in 1882; while those of the third year discussed the further developments of this theory from that date till the close of the course in 1890.

Book Synopsis Darwin and After Darwin by : George John Romanes
Download or read book Darwin and After Darwin written by George John Romanes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Darwin and After Darwin by George John Romanes is considered to be one of the best pieces of work on the Darwinian theory of evolution. The book is spread across ten chapters which logically pans out the entire discourse on Darwinism. With dedicated portions on morphology, embryology and palaeontology among other strands, this is perhaps the perfect primer on Darwinian thought. Romanes expertly postulates the existing evidence for Darwinian Theory and focuses not just on natural and sexual selection but also dedicates an entire section to the criticism it received as well, so that the reader is not left with a lopsided view. Towards the end linkages are drawn to the relationship Darwinian thought has on the fundamentals of religion as well. Darwin and After Darwin is endowed with many illustrations to make descriptions and concepts as clear and concise as possible, with a list in the beginning for easy access to specific segments. Romanes holds his own in refuting some of the more serious criticisms faced by Darwinian Theory. In that sense Darwin and After Darwin is not just a compilation of material but a scholarly attempt to expound various concepts in crisp, clear language. As Romanes himself claims, this is a perfect read for the layman as well as scholars of the subject because he has ensured that not a single portion of this work assumes any existing knowledge of the reader on the topic.
