Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Danube, Its History, Scenery, and Topography: Splendidly Illustrated, From Sketches Taken on the Spot IN the accompanying work on the Danube, which closes the series of 111113. Trated Works on which I have been pleasingly engaged during the last ten years, I have endeavoured to combine as much interesting matter as the nature and limits of the undertaking would admit. I have followed nearly the same plan as that which I first adopted in the Switzerland Illustrated and for whatever scenes I have not described from actual ob servation, I have been studious to select the best authorities, both English and German: whilst my own manuscripts have, in several instances, been enriched by the graphic notes of Mr. Bartlett, taken during his recent voyage down the Danube. Keeping in view the picturesque character of the task, I have aimed at conciseness; and instead of loading the text with a weight of mere historical matter, I have endeavoured to lighten it with legends, traditions, anecdotes, and ballads, many of which are now, for the first time, printed from the original manu scripts. In addition to the eighty steel engravings, the text is further illustrated by nearly the same number of wood-cuts, which give a new and striking feature to the work, and render it, in point of pictorial embellishments, more rich and attractive than any Of the popular series yet issued by the same enterprising Publishers. Of these Illustrations, the greater portion was taken on the spot by M. Abresch, - a German artist of Well-known talent and reputation, -and drawn by Mr. Bartlett, 'who has also contributed various original views, interspersed throughout the work. Book Synopsis Steamboat Modernity by : Constantin Ardeleanu
Download or read book Steamboat Modernity written by Constantin Ardeleanu and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-31 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a skillful combination of economic and cultural history, this book describes the impact on Moldavia and Wallachia of steam navigation on the Danube. The Danube route integrated the two principalities into a dense network of European roads and waterways. From the 1830s to the 1860s, steamboat transport transformed time and space for the areas that benefited from regular services. River traffic accelerated urban development along the Lower Danube and contributed directly to institutional modernization in one of Europe’s peripheries. Beyond technological advances and the transportation of goods on a trans-imperial waterway, steamboat travel revolutionized human interactions, too. The book offers a fascinating insight into the social and cultural milieu of the nineteenth century, drawing on first-hand accounts of Danube cruising. Describing the story of travelers who interacted, met, and visited the places they stopped, Constantin Ardeleanu creates a transnational history of travel up and down the Danube from Vienna to Constantinople. The pleasures and sometimes the travails of the travelers unfold against a backdrop of technical and economic transformation in the crucial period of modernization.
Book Synopsis Imaging and Mapping Eastern Europe by : Katarzyna Murawska-Muthesius
Download or read book Imaging and Mapping Eastern Europe written by Katarzyna Murawska-Muthesius and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-10 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imaging and Mapping Eastern Europe puts images centre stage and argues for the agency of the visual in the construction of Europe’s east as a socio-political and cultural entity. This book probes into the discontinuous processes of mapping the eastern European space and imaging the eastern European body. Beginning from the Renaissance maps of Sarmatia Europea, it moves onto the images of women in ethnic dress on the pages of travellers’ reports from the Balkans, to cartoons of children bullied by dictators in the satirical press, to Cold War cartography, and it ends with photos of protesting crowds on contemporary dust jackets. Studying the eastern European ‘iconosphere’ leads to the engagement with issues central for image studies and visual culture: word and image relationship, overlaps between the codes of othering and self-fashioning, as well as interaction between the diverse modes of production specific to cartography, travel illustrations, caricature, and book cover design. This book will be of interest to scholars in art history, visual culture, and central Asian, Russian and Eastern European studies.
