Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cyclopaedia of Social Usage: Manners and Customs of the Twentieth Century The more elaborate phrases, once used for this ceremony, have fallen out of fashion. To-day we say: "Mrs. Brown, allow me to present Mr. Robinson," or, with even less formality: "Mrs. Brown, Mr. Robinson." When making an introduction, names should be enunciated clearly, and, in both forms given above, the rule followed is that of presenting the man to the woman. The mention of Mrs. Browns name first, in the second of the two forms, implies this distinction, which the gentler sex almost invariably enjoys. Exceptions to this rule rarely occur. However, a very young lady, whether married or single, might be presented to an elderly and distinguished gentleman. It would be eminently correct to introduce Miss Brown to Senator Jones, to Justice R., to Admiral A., or General T. But these gentlemen must all be introduced to a matron, or to a lady past her debutanteship. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Daily Life of Women in the Progressive Era by : Kirstin Olsen
Download or read book Daily Life of Women in the Progressive Era written by Kirstin Olsen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-06-24 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book illustrates the social change that took place in the lives of women during the Progressive Era. The political and social change of the Progressive Era brought conflicts over labor, women's rights, consumerism, religion, sexuality, and many other aspects of American life. As Americans argued and fought over suffrage and political reform, vast changes were also taking place in women's professional, material, personal, recreational, and intellectual lives. In this installment of Greenwood's Daily Life through History series, award-winning author Kirstin Olsen brings to life the everyday experiences, priorities, and challenges of women in America's Progressive Era (ca. 1890–1920). From the barnstorming "bloomer girls" who showed America that women could play baseball to film star, tycoon, and co-founder of the Academy of Motion Pictures Mary Pickford, and from the highly skilled "Hello Girls"—telephone operators who helped win World War I—to the remarkable journalist and civil rights activist Ida Wells-Barnett, women led both famous and ordinary lives that were shaped by and helped to drive the dramatic social change taking place during the Progressive Era. All of this and more is described in this book through topical sections as well as stories and profiles that reveal to readers the daily lives of America's women who lived during the Progressive Era. Readers will benefit from Olsen's characteristically sharp eye for detail, power of description, and breadth of historical knowledge.

Book Synopsis Domestic Interiors by : Georgina Downey
Download or read book Domestic Interiors written by Georgina Downey and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the act of enclosing space and making rooms, we make and define our aspirations and identities. Taking a room by room approach, this fascinating volume explores how representations of domestic space have embodied changing spatial configurations and values, and considers how we see modern individuals in the process of making themselves 'at home'. Scholars from the US, UK and Australasia re-visit and re-think interiors by Bonnard, Matisse, Degas and Vuillard, as well as the great spaces of early modernity; the drawing room in Rossetti's house, hallways in Hampstead Garden Suburb, the Paris attic of the Brothers Goncourt; Schütte-Lihotzky's Frankfurt Kitchen, to explore how interior making has changed from the Victorian to the modern period. From the smallest room - the bathroom - to the spacious verandas of Singapore Deco, Domestic Interiors focuses on modern rooms 'imaged' and imagined, it builds a distinct body of knowledge around the interior, interiority, representation and modernity, and creates a rich resource for students and scholars in art, architecture and design history.
