Book excerpt: Lakedge, a quiet forestry hamlet at the border of the boreal belt of northern Canada, is once again facing doom. El Niño, using the elements and a strong dose of greed from humans that feed it in the first place, is trying to accomplish what its big sister The Spanish Lady couldn’t achieve during the influenza pandemic. Joshua Stuart, the town manager, is forced to use all his willpower and energy to maintain order and survive. His family, his friends, indeed his whole community is threatened by fire, drought and storms. As the Ojibwa story goes, the evil monsters that are under the earth have been freed and they come to devour the inhabitants of the earth. Someone has to stop them before they succeed.

Book excerpt: One afternoon like any other, I saw myself in front of a puzzling young man with a distant look, disillusioned, angry with the world, in fact, with life itself. With red, irritated eyes like blazing fire which reacts when wood is thrown to it; his battered and stained clothes, displayed a careless and filthy boy. His complexion and thin, childlike appearance were characteristics that made him go unnoticed. His body had a peculiar stench. He smelled musty and rotten. The scars on his head, face and arms were covered with poorly designed tattoos and earrings with which he tried to hide the physical wounds that would only reflect the depth of the damage to his soul. His language was popular. Combined with bad words and constant remarks of "That asshole", "That bitch", "That motherfucker", "Life is worthless", "I curse life", "I curse the happiness of others, I curse whoever looks at me, I curse God Himself as examples of the agony of his existence. This was the first time that I saw a person more miserable and lonelier than me.

Book excerpt: This paper employs a dynamic multi-country framework to analyze the international macroeconomic transmission of El Niño weather shocks. This framework comprises 21 country/region-specific models, estimated over the period 1979Q2 to 2013Q1, and accounts for not only direct exposures of countries to El Niño shocks but also indirect effects through thirdmarkets. We contribute to the climate-macroeconomy literature by exploiting exogenous variation in El Niño weather events over time, and their impact on different regions crosssectionally, to causatively identify the effects of El Niño shocks on growth, inflation, energy and non-fuel commodity prices. The results show that there are considerable heterogeneities in the responses of different countries to El Niño shocks. While Australia, Chile, Indonesia, India, Japan, New Zealand and South Africa face a short-lived fall in economic activity in response to an El Niño shock, for other countries (including the United States and European region), an El Niño occurrence has a growth-enhancing effect. Furthermore, most countries in our sample experience short-run inflationary pressures as both energy and non-fuel commodity prices increase. Given these findings, macroeconomic policy formulation should take into consideration the likelihood and effects of El Niño weather episodes.

Book excerpt: Comprehensive and up-to-date information on Earth’s most dominant year-to-year climate variation The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the Pacific Ocean has major worldwide social and economic consequences through its global scale effects on atmospheric and oceanic circulation, marine and terrestrial ecosystems, and other natural systems. Ongoing climate change is projected to significantly alter ENSO's dynamics and impacts. El Niño Southern Oscillation in a Changing Climate presents the latest theories, models, and observations, and explores the challenges of forecasting ENSO as the climate continues to change. Volume highlights include: Historical background on ENSO and its societal consequences Review of key El Niño (ENSO warm phase) and La Niña (ENSO cold phase) characteristics Mathematical description of the underlying physical processes that generate ENSO variations Conceptual framework for understanding ENSO changes on decadal and longer time scales, including the response to greenhouse gas forcing ENSO impacts on extreme ocean, weather, and climate events, including tropical cyclones, and how ENSO affects fisheries and the global carbon cycle Advances in modeling, paleo-reconstructions, and operational climate forecasting Future projections of ENSO and its impacts Factors influencing ENSO events, such as inter-basin climate interactions and volcanic eruptions The American Geophysical Union promotes discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity. Its publications disseminate scientific knowledge and provide resources for researchers, students, and professionals. Find out more about this book from this Q&A with the editors.

Different narrators in various parts of the world, from a Protestant minister in New York to a young Hindu in Sri Lanka to a doctor in central Africa, tell their stories of the boy, but don't always agree on whether their dreams have come true or whether they have lost something important. How much would we be willing to sacrifice?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon is a recurrent feature of the climate in tropical regions. In this volume leading experts summarize information gained over the past decade concerning diverse aspects of ENSO, which have led to marked improvements in our ability to forecast its development months or seasons in advance. This volume compares ENSO's modern morphology and variability with its recent historic and prehistoric behaviour. It expands and updates Diaz and Markgraf's earlier volume El Niño: Historical and Paleoclimatic Aspects of the Southern Oscillation (1992, Cambridge University Press). The volume will be of importance to a broad range of scientists in meteorology, oceanography, hydrology, geosciences, ecology, public health, emergency management response and mitigation, and decision-making. It will also be used as a supplementary textbook and reference source in graduate courses in environmental studies.

Book excerpt: Psychoanalysis and Narrative analyzes narrative in literary fiction, film, and autobiography through different psychoanalytic lenses including gender and socio-cultural perspectives. This book aims to demonstrate how fictionists and film makers have intuitively developed – through their own creativity – many of the psychoanalytic discoveries about the human mind. Subverting the usual direction of “applied psychoanalysis,” the book goes from creativity to psychoanalysis, and focuses on four internationally known Argentine writers: Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortázar, Manuel Puig, and Luisa Valenzuela; two Argentine women filmmakers, Lucrecia Martel and Lucía Puenzo; and French essayist and writer Serge Doubrovsky. This volume will be of interest to students and academics interested in autobiography and autofiction.
