Book Synopsis Curious Naturalists by : Dr. Niko Tinbergen
Download or read book Curious Naturalists written by Dr. Niko Tinbergen and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-12 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Niko Tinbergen was well known as a naturalist and a student of animal behaviour in England, on the Continent and in the United States. Ever since he was a young student in Holland he had been curious about nature, and in this book he sets out some of the facts that 25 years of curiosity gave him. As a biologist, anything living was his province—the bee-killing wasps and the digger wasps of the Dutch sand dunes; the Snow Bruntings and Phalaropes of Greenland; Hobbies and other hawks; moths and butterflies in various parts of England and Holland; Black-headed Gulls of the Ravenglass nature reserve, Cumberland, the Kittiwakes and Eider Ducks of the Farne Islands off the coast of Northumberland. Readers cannot fail to be struck—and possibly sometimes amused—by the patience and ingenuity shown in the field studies undertaken by Dr. Tinbergen and his fellow naturalists—and which are now passed on for the benefit and interest of his readers. The studies were always undertaken seriously, but this did not prevent Dr. Tinbergen from writing about them in the liveliest way; he realised that quite often he and his friends must have seemed to onlookers to be very curious naturalists indeed.

Book Synopsis The Curious Mister Catesby by : E. Charles Nelson
Download or read book The Curious Mister Catesby written by E. Charles Nelson and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2015-03-01 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1712, English naturalist Mark Catesby (1683–1749) crossed the Atlantic to Virginia. After a seven-year stay, he returned to England with paintings of plants and animals he had studied. They sufficiently impressed other naturalists that in 1722 several Fellows of the Royal Society sponsored his return to North America. There Catesby cataloged the flora and fauna of the Carolinas and the Bahamas by gathering seeds and specimens, compiling notes, and making watercolor sketches. Going home to England after five years, he began the twenty-year task of writing, etching, and publishing his monumental The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands. Mark Catesby was a man of exceptional courage and determination combined with insatiable curiosity and multiple talents. Nevertheless no portrait of him is known. The international contributors to this volume review Catesby’s biography alongside the historical and scientific significance of his work. Ultimately, this lavishly illustrated volume advances knowledge of Catesby’s explorations, collections, artwork, and publications in order to reassess his importance within the pantheon of early naturalists.

Book Synopsis The Wilder Muir by : Bonnie J. Gisel
Download or read book The Wilder Muir written by Bonnie J. Gisel and published by Yosemite Conservancy. This book was released on 2017-03-20 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether he is cheering for untamed mountain sheep or braving a high-country storm that would sweep away lesser mortals, John Muir—outdoorsman, scientist, author—is forever passionate, often droll, and always inspirational. This collection of his little-known pieces have been culled from private letters, magazine articles, and personal journals from deep in the archives. In Bonnie Gisel’s able hands, Muir takes the reader on thrilling adventures and remarkable discoveries. His first summit of Half Dome, his great epiphany about the “living glaciers of the Sierra,” and his jolly ode to the giant sequoia are all presented here with awe and affection. A nearly penniless young Muir sleeps under the stars in a Florida graveyard. Muir the father prods his wife in the back with a stick, “helping” her up Yosemite’s Four Mile Trail. And an older yet still adventurous Muir summits Mount Rainier and survives the perilously icy descent. Certain to delight fans of The Wild Muir, these audacious exploits reveal John Muir’s boundless curiosity and love of all things wild.
