Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greatly to be welcomed. This meticulously researched and richly documented account provides fresh insights into theological controversy and social prejudice and should be read by all serious students of the Victorian Church.Greatly to be welcomed. Richard Sharp The Rev. Dr John Hunt (1827-1907) was not a typical clergyman in the Victorian Church of England. He was Scottish, of lowly birth, and lacking both social connections and private means. He was also a witty and fluent intellectual, whose publications stood alongside the most eminent of his peers during a period when theology was being redefined in the light of Darwin’s Origin of Species and other radical scientific advances. Hunt attracted notoriety and conflict as well as admiration and respect: he was the subject of articles in Punch and in the wider press concerning his clandestine dissection of a foetus in the crypt of a City church, while his Essay on Pantheism was proscribed by the Roman Catholic Church. He had many skirmishes with incumbents, both evangelical and catholic, and was dismissed from several of his curacies. This book analyses his career in London and St Ives (Cambs.) through the lens of his autobiographical narrative, Clergymen Made Scarce (1867). David Yeandle has examined a little-known copy of the text that includes manuscript annotations by Eliza Hunt, the wife of the author, which offer unique insight into the many anonymous and pseudonymous references in the text. A Victorian Curate: A Study of the Life and Career of the Rev. Dr John Hunt is an absorbing personal account of the corruption and turmoil in the Church of England at this time. It will appeal to anyone interested in this history, the relationship between science and religion in the nineteenth century, or the role of the curate in Victorian England.

Book excerpt: Building on inquiry-learning theory and research, this text explores how inquiry process models and questioning protocols can be used and modified to develop curious and reflective lifelong learners and problem solvers while simultaneously fostering a school-wide inquiry culture. Part of the Shared Foundations series, this book examines effective implementation of the Shared Foundation Inquire from the National School Library Standards. By studying Inquire through the Domains, readers will see how the Competencies and Alignments support and demonstrate learner growth in the inquiry process and can reflect on their practices in a variety of K-12 settings. Loaded with ideas and strategies to grow critical, systematic thinkers who design solutions to authentic problems, this book features theoretical discussion of the research framing Inquire and strategies for cultivating inquiry cultures that extend beyond the school library; application of common process models and questioning techniques aligned with the Inquire Domains, showing learner growth in the inquiry process through personalized inquiry paths; no-tech, low-tech, and high-tech tools and examples for supporting inquiry learning in school library settings with various levels of support; lesson plans contributed by K-12 school librarians demonstrating integration of the Inquire Competencies with core content areas; and figures and tables to illustrate more complex ideas in both theory and practice. This deep dive into Inquire supports school librarians working with other educators to design inquiry-based learning experiences that improve learner outcomes, personalize inquiry paths, and engage learners with core content. !--EndFragment--

Elle Decoration "A paradise for the curious, Lynda and Ali present an interior perspective so cosy that you already feel you live there. Textural spaces cleansed in monochromatic hues - with ideas that invite your imagination to consider home and collections in a new light." Sunday Express Doyenne of the unique and decorative, Australian interior stylist and boutique hotelier, Lynda Gardener, is always on the hunt for finds to enhance her homes and decorating projects. Her ability to curate and display these personal treasures has created a trademark style that is loved internationally. Curate, the highly anticipated book by creative duo, Lynda Gardener and journalist and stylist Ali Heath, reveals how to create a home that is truly individual. With their shared love of a monochrome aesthetic and natural imperfections, they explore the eight Elements that bring a space to life: palette, nature, textiles, lighting, a combination of old and new, storage, collections and art. Ten aspirational homes show the style in practice, including a converted warehouse, one-bedroom studio, bijoux apartment, historic cottage, country estate, new-build barn, remote shack, period townhouse and rural retreat. With gloriously evocative photography and plenty of down-to-earth ideas, Curate will encourage the reader to embrace their individual style, dream big and create a timeless interior of their own.
