Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cultivation of Fruit Trees and Shrubs Our object in presenting to the public this modest treatise on fruit trees, is to popularize the culture of these trees, which once well understood, cannot fail to become a source of large revenue to all who devote themselves to it. For far too long a period have the farmers of the Province of Quebec neglected this matter and even in our day, the cultivation of fruit trees is carried on in a very small way, and principally in the vicinity of large centers. Still owing to the increased facilities of communication, the valnac fruit has considerably improved and the' receipts from a well planted piece of ground 'd materially to the revenue of the farm, as every one will eat fruit, when obtainable at a reasonable price. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Miniature Fruit Garden: Or the Culture of Pyramidal and Bush Fruit Trees With Instructions for Root-Pruning &C. &C The publication of the twentieth edition is a satisfactory proof of the successful application of the rules laid down in the preceding editions. I am happy to think that the work has contributed to the pleasure of many by drawing their attention to the fact that fruit trees may be cultivated in a smaller space than was formerly supposed to be possible, and I hope that with the spread of knowledge the pleasure and profit derived from the cultivation of small fruit trees may be extended to many cottage gardens in England. I may here remark that apples on the Paradise stock are especially suited for cottagers. With a good selection of trees on this stock, the cottage may compete successfully at autumnal shows with the garden of the mansion, and in certain situations, well selected,, the fine varieties of Belgian and French pears - peculiarly the property of skilful and wealthy horticulturists - will, by attention to the simple rules given in this work, be exhibited by the humble but triumphant cottager. That is when plant life evolved along with animal life. And that is how the surface of the earth was covered with lush fruitful vegetation, which flourished and evolved in different climates. As time went by, climatic changes also changed the nature and the appearance of these plants. From multicelled algae and fungi, they became huge multicelled giant trees, like the Sequoia, which are remnants of those glorious days of giant Green trees gone by. And soon man found out that trees were very useful to give him shelter, to give him food, and to provide him with essential fruit, leaves, and seeds to supplement his diet. That was because he was imitating the animals around him. They nibbled at leaves, he did the same thing. Sometimes he ended up with a tummy ache. Sometimes the animals ended up sick while he was left hale and hearty. But down the ages, and through lots of trial and error, he found out that every single plant out there could be put into use, even those plants we consider weeds today. The mythological and historical hanging Gardens of Babylon, which were supposed to have been built by Nebuchadnezzar, but in actuality were built by Sennacherib in Nineveh, Assyria, about 300 km away from Babylon. These were lush with green trees from all over the world. And historians who are not really bothered about historic authenticity and the names of kings, did not bother much about the locality or the creator of one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. First-hand accounts of that time were not available, and when Babylon conquered Assyria, they called it the new Babylon. And so centuries later historians wrote about the wonders of marvelous trees and green vegetation, growing in Babylon. So that is the reason why since ancient times, trees, especially fruit trees have been an important part of cultured and civilized landscaping. They were and are planted in gardens for the pleasure of the general public or for your own private enjoyment. You can grow one kind of fruit or another in almost any garden. Even the smallest garden can produce apples and strawberries. If you have plenty of land you are lucky because you have the space to allow your trees to spread their wings and flourish.

This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fruit Trees, Roses, Shrubs, Etc. And How to Grow Them For fruit trees the soil should be dry, either natural or made so by thorough drainage, as they will not live or thrive on a soil constantly saturated with stagnant moisture. It should also be well prepared by twiceplowing, at least, beforehand, using the subsoil plow after the common one at the second plowing. On new fresh lands manuring will be unnecessary, but on lands exhausted by cropping, fertilizers must be applied, either by turning in heavy crops of clover or well decomposed manure or compost. To insure a good growth of fruit trees, land should be in as good condition as for a crop of wheat, corn, or potatoes. If you want trees to grow well, be vigorous and strong, you must give them plenty of food and good cultiva tion until August lst, when all cultivation should cease, to allow new wood to thoroughly ripen up before cold weather, which it will not do if kept growing by cultivation after that date. In regard to this important operation, there are more fatal errors committed than in any other. As a general thing, trees are planted in the ground precisely as they are sent from the nursery. In removing a tree, Figs. 1 and 3 show trees as they come from the nursery. Figs. 2 and 4 show the same trees propno matter how carefully it may be done, a portion of the roots are broken and destroyed, and consequently the bal ance that existed in the structure of the tree is deranged. This must be restored by a proper pruning, adapted to the size, form, and condition of the tree, as follows: Standard Orchard Trees. - These, as sent from the nursery, vary from five to seven feet in height, with naked stems or trunks, and a number of branches at the top forming a head. These branches should all be cut back to within three or four buds of their base. This lessens the demand upon the roots, and enables the remaining buds to push with vigor. Cut Off smoothly all bruised or broken roots up to the sound wood. In case of older trees, of extra size, the pruning must be in proportion; as a general thing it will be safe to shorten all the previous year's shoots to three or four buds at their base, and where the branches are very numerous some may be cut out entirely.
