Book excerpt: The purpose of this research is to examine the effect of supply chain agility on export performance through the mediating role of responsiveness, innovativeness, and competence in the manufacturing firms of Pakistan. The research is aimed at identifying how market dynamics play a moderating role between the firm's export commitment and export performance by studying environmental conditions and various barriers in the market. The preparation of the questionnaire has been done through the study of extant literature. Data was collected from the 299 representatives working in different manufacturing companies in Pakistan. Suitable tests were conducted to validate the current study and the validity of the constructs. The testing of the hypothesis was conducted using PLS-SEM software. The study has found the support of the only mediator competence in the relationship. One of the reasons for this gap is that data were collected from the manufacturing companies in Pakistan which need to reinforce innovative skills and be responsive enough to cater to the changing needs of the customer. The current study creates an opportunity for future research by working on the specific industry of Pakistan to get more concrete results or the addition of new variables that can add a valuable impact on the proposed relationship.

Book excerpt: This book critically examines the concept of 'supply chain agility' (SCA) in a novel context, shedding light on its implications for executives and professionals. While much literature has explored SCA in manufacturing, this book pioneers a comprehensive exploration of its application in the service sector, an often-overlooked domain in operations management, supply chain management, and innovation literature. The analysis, based on data from 245 service firms in Australia, employs a unique approach, revealing a positive relationship between firm innovativeness and SCA, with SCA in turn positively impacting firm performance. By bridging gaps in previous research, this book offers conceptual, methodological, and empirical contributions, emphasizing the critical role of innovation in achieving SCA, particularly in uncertain contexts. It provides valuable insights for firms navigating the service economy, offering a holistic examination of the benefits of SCA and empirically validating its role in managing market changes cost-effectively for a competitive advantage. The findings encourage a re-evaluation of firm performance, urging business professionals and managers to adopt a comprehensive perspective. The insights presented serve as a valuable tool for measurement, estimation, assessment, and benchmarking—key drivers for improving and predicting performance in dynamic supply chain environments. Overall, this book is a timely and essential resource for those seeking to understand and enhance supply chain agility in the evolving landscape of the service industry.

Book excerpt: Agility has been identified as one of the most salient issues of contemporary supply chain management. Despite its importance, there has been limited theory development in the firm supply chain agility area. Elements and linkages among agility elements are underdeveloped, and it is uncommon for any two authors to adopt the same definition. A rigorously validated survey instrument is also needed to enable researchers to credibly build on theories regarding causal links among agility-related capabilities, practices and performance outcomes. The sports science and military science theoretical bases are investigated to better understand agility and identify its dimensions, and define it in a supply chain context. Further, a comprehensive measurement instrument that draws on the foundations of social and life science theory is developed and empirically validated so that researchers can rigorously expand agility theory The antecedents of firm supply chain agility have been primarily addressed at an operational level. This dissertation expands on the work of Braunscheidel and Suresh (2009) who explored the role of different managerial orientations in achieving supply chain agility. Finally, scholars have issued research calls for an in-depth understanding of the performance outcomes of firm supply chain agility and accentuated the need to empirically examine such outcomes from an efficiency and effectiveness perspective. This dissertation responds to such calls, and further investigates the impact of firm supply chain agility on the firm's financial performance using secondary, Compustat data. Thus, this research further contributes to theory development by providing a better understanding of how firm supply chain agility impacts firm performance. Relevant managerial implications are also presented.

Book excerpt: Ability to manage the supply chain in a sustainable way has attracted attention towards firms across all industries including agriculture. Meeting economic, environmental and social standards at all nodes of the supply chain ensures that minimum sustainable performance of a firm is reached. There is consensus in marketing literature that performance can be achieved through learning, innovation and development of capabilities. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis was to examine the effect of learning orientation, knowledge management, collaborative innovation and supply chain capabilities on sustainable export performance of small firms in Kenya and Uganda as participants in global supply chains. First, this study builds on insights from prior literature and triangulates the relational view, resource complementarity view and dynamic capability approach to develop a conceptual model of determinants of sustainable export performance of small exporting firms in Kenya and Uganda. The central premise of model in that learning orientation affects sustainable export performance through collaborative innovation and supply chain capabilities. The model also posits that, the mediation effect of collaborative innovation and supply chain capabilities depends on the level of knowledge management of small firms.Second, the thesis provides an empirical test of the proposed model by gathering data from 535 small exporting firms in Kenya and Uganda using a structured questionnaire. The unit of analyses were small firms exporting fish and horticultural products. New measures for collaborative innovation and sustainable export performance were developed and validated. Measures for learning orientation, supply chain capabilities and knowledge management were adapted from literature. Data was analysed using SPSS 20 and PROCESS v2.10 macro. Results indicate a positive significant effect of learning orientation on sustainable export performance. Both collaborative innovation and supply chain capabilities were found to have a partial mediating effect on the relationship between learning orientation and sustainable export performance. Knowledge management was also found to moderate the relationship between learning orientation, collaborative innovation and supply chain capabilities. In conclusion, the thesis identified that learning orientation, collaborative innovation, knowledge management and supply chain capabilities determine sustainable export performance of small firms. The study extends literature by developing measures for collaborative innovation and sustainable export performance for small firms.

Managing Supply Chains on the Silk Road: Strategy, Performance, and Risk present emerging supply chain practices from the Silk Road regions that include China, Hong Kong, India, Pakistan, Iran, Central Asia, Lebanon, Turkey, Israel, and Hungary. It takes a results-oriented, comparative approach to supply chain management covering structural, strategic, and operational topics. The book first presents how the historical Silk Road supply chains operated and then provides new and interesting examples from different countries the Silk Road passed, from China to Europe. The text demonstrates that the supply chain concept and its related practices are not new, per se, and invented recently in the West. Rather, it was practiced for centuries along the Silk Road and became the foundation for today’s global supply chains. Against this backdrop, the book explores the differences and similarities along the Silk Road in the supply chain management process and what can be learned from them. As supply chains become longer, leaner, and more scattered around the globe, performance and risk become two sides of a coin. Bringing together a diverse team of experts from academia and the business world, the book’s coverage spans not only regions, but industries. This fresh perspective provides insights for assessing performance and hedging risk and opens up new directions for research. ... Haksoz, Seshadri, and Iyer have brought together 28 scholars and business executives from different continents to share their perspectives about past and present trading activities along the Silk Road. ... [the book] examines a wide range of issues arising from a multicultural perspective. ... provides clear insights of the past and the present that will help academics and practitioners to gain a better understanding of the future. -From the foreword by Christopher Tang, University of California, Los Angeles

The data from 141 samples revealed that both strategic flexibility and manufacturing flexibility positively influence supply chain agility. Meanwhile, strategic flexibility and supply chain agility positively influence firm performance but not manufacturing flexibility. Supply chain agility also plays a significant mediating role in firm performance. Based on these findings, the present study adds to the growing evidence of supply chain agility in both the academe and the practitioners' arena. The results provide solid implications to practitioners in the industry to help them beef up their firepower in today's fiercely competitive market. The result is consistent with those arguments that promote the importance of supply chain agility in association with firm performance. However, the statistical findings do not support the hypothesis that manufacturing flexibility positively influences firm performance. Manufacturing flexibility positively influences firm performance with only supply chain agility as the mediator. The present study articulates the perspective that firms should not look at flexibility in isolation from the rest of the supply chains, but should orchestrate the supply chain capability in a holistic manner and strive for a strategic level of supply chain agility in a broader sense.

Many practical application experiments and pilot cases nowadays provide evidence on what works and what still remains as a challenge for collaborative networked organizations (CNOs). The fast evolution of the information and communication technologies and in particular the so-called Internet technologies, also represents an important motivator for the emergence of new forms of collaboration. However, most efforts in this area are highly fragmented, considering only some partial facets and not a holistic perspective that would be required. We are therefore at a point in which it is necessary to define much more consolidated and sustainable research strategies for a second phase of research and development in this area. This book addresses the main disciplines involved in CNOs. It further synthesizes the views and opinions expressed by a large number of visionaries from the main disciplines involved in CNOs, and offers a comprehensive set of recommendations for the establishment of a research agenda on collaborative networks. As recognized experts in their specific areas, different authors in this book have presented work that is backed by a large number of research results, each focusing on specific facets of collaborative networks, and coming out of a large number of international and national projects.

In this competitive environment, the companies need to use their resources in the most accurate manner in order to survive. Companies gain a competitive advantage by responding to variable customer demands in different markets within the shortest time and at the right time. They can also gain this by concentrating the agility factor in the supply chain. In case of uncertainty, the supply chain must be agile for the companies to gain a competitive advantage. In this study, the effects of agility and technological uncertainty on the performance of the company in the supply chain management are examined. In the research, it has been observed that technological uncertainty affects the supply chain agility and the supply chain agility also affects the performance of the company in a positive way.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: 64, Coventry University (Faculty of Engineering, Environment and Computing), course: Engineering Management, language: English, abstract: This work studies the traditional organisational structure of fashion industry in India. The aim is to understand the importance of the agility and response-based supply chain for the fashion industry. The author wants to determine what agility is and to find its role in achieving the balance between profit maximization and meeting the customer demand. The essence of an agile supply chain has been determined and various enabling factors such as flexibility, reduction in lead time and innovation have been identified by means of the analysis. Based on data collected from semi-structured interviews of different firms and organizations in India, it was determined that the awareness about agility and responsiveness is very low. Finally, a critical analysis of the application of current technologies in supply chain management was performed to understand the capabilities of current systems and their usefulness. Today's business environment is rapidly changing due to globalization, outsourcing, mass customization, new innovations in technologies and changes in customer preferences. A volatile market, short product life-cycle and the uncertain environment has made organisations look for better ways to do business. Firms are experiencing a need for better infrastructures to support their decision making due to the changing environment. Therefore, in order to compete in a marketplace with tremendous opportunities, it is necessary for firms to have an effective supply chain management.

Book excerpt: The many manifestations of international production sharing have become the organizing theme for practically any discussion on production, trade, investment, development and international economic cooperation more generally. GVCs are at the economic heart of globalization. Policies of governments are central to outcomes, influencing the establishment, configuration and operation of GVCs in numerous ways. Technological possibilities and firm behaviour are also crucial determinants of what happens in the supply chain world. Global value chains (GVCs) have become ubiquitous. The literature that attempts to understand and explain GVCs is vast, multi-disciplinary and no less complex than the phenomenon itself. This volume is an ambitious attempt at a fairly comprehensive review of literature on the subject. --Publisher description.

Despite the benefits associated with pursuing agile supply chain strategy, little is known about how the agile supply chain strategy stimulate better performance for the firms. Also, there is a lack of understanding of the conditions under which agile supply chain strategy impacts the performance. Through the theoretical lens of strategy, structure, performance paradigm, knowledge-based view, and contingency theory, this research examines the linkages from agile supply chain strategy to mass customization capability (MCC), and operational ambidexterity (OA).This study also examines the association between MCC, OA and multiple dimensions of the performance. Moreover, this research examines the role of MCC and OA as the means to achieve the objective of agile supply chain strategy. Furthermore, this study investigates the critical role played by strategic integration, environmental uncertainty, and internal integration from a contingency perspective. The data was collected from 302 supply chain professionals working at US manufacturing firms. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to analyze the hypothesized relationships. The results demonstrate that agile supply chain strategy is positively associated with MCC and OA. This research shows that MCC and OA are critical capabilities that enable the company to compete on multiple dimensions of performance. Also, the results indicate that MCC partially mediates the relationship agile supply chain strategy and cost, quality, delivery, flexibility, and business performance. On the other hand, OA partially mediates the relationship between agile supply chain strategy and cost, delivery, and flexibility. Further, OA fully mediates the relationship between agile supply chain strategy and quality. The results uncover the importance of strategic integration by demonstrating that strategic integration has a direct association with MCC in addition to moderating the relationship between agile supply chain strategy and MCC. This study also indicates that the relationship between MCC and cost, quality, flexibility, and business performance becomes stronger under the condition of high environmental uncertainty, thereby providing evidence of the effectiveness of MCC. Further, the results reveal the importance of internal integration by showing that higher the internal integration, the stronger the association between OA and cost, and flexibility. Based on the findings of this study, research and managerial implications are discussed.

Book excerpt: This paper investigates the fundamental building blocks of supply chain agility, which are conceptualized as supply- and demand-side competence. While the former is conceptualized as production and supply management related activities, the latter is conceptualized as distribution and demand management related activities. The model further assesses the influence of supply chain agility on operational performance, as well as its mediating role in the relationship between supply- and demand-side competence and performance. Within this framework, process compliance, i.e. how well supply chain management processes are internally executed by the firm's employees, is viewed as an enabler (moderator) on the relationship between supply chain competencies and supply chain agility. Theoretical substantiation is provided by the resource-based view of the firm augmented with the dynamic capabilities perspective. The model is tested with data from 121 supply chain management professionals. Implications for both academic theory development, and supply chain and production management practice are provided.
