Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William MacCullum Clow was born in 1853 in Glasgow, Scotland. Early on, his family lived in Auckland, New Zealand and he went to school there. But when he was seventeen years old, he and his family were living at 159 North Street, Glasgow, Scotland. His father, Andrew Clow, age 51, was a successful Master Carpenter who had several men in his employ, and his mother, Jane, was a homemaker. He had an older sister and a younger brother. William Clow dedicated his book, “Evangel of the Strait Gate” to his father and to De Witt Clinton Taylor. For “The Cross and Christian Experience” he collected twenty-five of his best sermons on the Cross. Each sermon is well organized with his main points clearly and logically stated. He supported his lessons with an abundance of Holy Scripture and with illustrations from contemporary life, history, literature and works of theology. His book shows how well-read he was in his use of allusions, citations, and references from English and American literature as well as from World literature. He was a highly educated man having received his university education from a prestigious institution. He also studied the Holy Scriptures on his own. From his personal study, he reflected on the things he gleaned from religious books, periodicals, and lectures. He was true to the scriptures and true to the message of the Cross. Upon reading The Cross and Christian Experience” Dr. W. H. Griffith Thomas wrote: “Seldom have I read a fresher or more inspiring volume of sermons, and I frankly confess that when once I started it I could hardly put it down. Mind and heart went out to the author in gratitude, and to God in thankfulness for such truly helpful teaching. ... I make bold to say that if the substance of this book were received and reproduced by the ministry of our Churches it would put iron into our blood, heart into our work, and joy into our people. . . ."Carroll Burcham is from Lubbock, Texas. Retired English teacher from Lubbock Christian University.

Book excerpt: "In one of the Book of Mormon's most magisterial passages, the lord of a vineyard looks over his beloved olive trees with great sorrow and strives to redeem them. This parable symbolizes Jesus Christ's labors to save not only individual souls, but an entire world. Perhaps more than any other Book of Mormon prophet, Jacob manifests the same divine anxiety, having been born in a 'wild wilderness' and inheriting the task of uniting a divided people."--Inside front cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Holy Spirit and Christian Experience, Simeon Zahl presents a fresh vision for Christian theology that foregrounds the relationship between theological ideas and the experiences of Christians. He argues that theology is always operating in a vibrant landscape of feeling and desiring, and shows that contemporary theology has often operated in problematic isolation from these experiential dynamics. He then argues that a theologically serious doctrine of the Holy Spirit not only authorizes but requires attention to Christian experience. Against this background, Zahl outlines a new methodological approach to Christian theology that attends to the emotional and experiential power of theological ideas. This methodology draws on recent interdisciplinary work on affect and emotion, which has shown that affects are powerful motivating realities that saturate all dimensions of human thinking and acting. In the process, Zahl also explains why contemporary theology has often been ambivalent about subjective experience, and demonstrates that current discourse about God's activity in the world is often artificially abstracted from experience and embodiment. At the heart of the book, Zahl proposes a new account of the theology of grace from this experiential and pneumatological perspective. Focusing on the work of the Holy Spirit in salvation and sanctification, he retrieves insights from Augustine, Luther, and Philip Melanchthon to present an affective and Augustinian vision of salvation as a pedagogy of desire. In articulating this vision, Zahl engages critically with recent emphasis on participation and theosis in Christian soteriology, and charts a new path forward for Protestant theology in a landscape hitherto dominated by the theological visions of Barth and Aquinas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cross in Christian Experience This book is not a selection of sermons on sporadic texts. It is a series of addresses arranged so as to present the Atonement as a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation. In the temper of our time, somewhat neglectful, and even resentful of the doctrine, the tone is necessarily apologetic. The essential feature of these addresses is their study of the Christian consciousness. The foremost place is given to the first Christian consciousness - that of Jesus Himself. I have not cited the peculiar or striking cases. The fatal blemish of much Evangelical teaching, and of some of the scholarly volumes which record the varieties of religious experience, is that they are fascinated by the varieties and ignore the normal and reverent and sane. Nor have I quoted, except as types to which others conform, the witness of the great saints. The great saints are too great. Humble souls may attain to their faith and penitence, but they do not surge with their passion, nor aspire with their rapture.
