Book Synopsis The Cross Examen by : Roger J. Gench
Download or read book The Cross Examen written by Roger J. Gench and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-10-29 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the essential relationship between spirituality and activism in conversation with a political theology of the cross. The author contends that contemplative practice and activism bear the same cruciform footprint and are integrally connected, for the cross of Jesus Christ reveals both the brokenness in our lives and the corresponding brokenness in the world; it also discloses the God who is always (and already) bringing resurrection and life out of the death-tending ways of our world. The cross and resurrection expose other crosses, large and small, that litter the landscape of our world and of our personal and corporate lives, as well as places where God’s resurrecting power is at work, bringing life out of death and establishing footholds for the unfolding of the new creation. The volume engages Paul’s Letter to the Galatians and new scholarly readings of it as a rich resource for reflection on these matters and explores the fruit of the Spirit as political virtues that empower communal participation in God’s restorative work in the world. Providing new angles of vision on both the cross and the apostle Paul, the book expands and enlivens reflection on spirituality and activism as profound and generative resources for contemporary faith and practice.

Download or read book Station to Station written by Gary Jansen and published by Loyola Press. This book was released on 2017-01-11 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An imaginative way to pray the Stations of the Cross every day of the year. “As Jansen walks with us from station to station, he points us from pain toward love and hope, toward strength and endurance, toward transformation.” —Jessica Mesman Griffith, from the introduction Throughout the centuries, Christians have asked, “Why is there suffering?” or, on a more personal level, “Why am I suffering?” Answers abound, but none are likely to suffice or satisfy. A far more helpful question might be, “How should I respond to suffering?” And the answer to that question, believes Gary Jansen, can be found by looking closely at the Passion of Jesus. In Station to Station, Jansen uses the scriptural Way of the Cross to focus our minds and hearts on Jesus’ anguish and death. Walking through each station, we see the unique ways in which Jesus responded to suffering, and we are challenged to react similarly in our own struggles. Furthermore, through various Ignatian exercises, Jansen encourages us to imaginatively pray our way through the stations and to gradually respond more as Jesus would when we are weighed down by life’s burdens. Whether you are bearing your own cross or helping someone else carry theirs, Station to Station will show you how Christ’s character in the midst of suffering can, with time and prayer, become your character too.

Book Synopsis Children and Cross-Examination by : J R Spencer
Download or read book Children and Cross-Examination written by J R Spencer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2009, Stephen Barker was convicted of rape on the evidence of a little girl who was four-and-a-half years old at the trial, and about three-and-a-half when first interviewed by the police. The high point of the proceedings was the child's appearance as a live witness in order for Barker's counsel to attempt a cross-examination. This case focused attention on the need, imposed by current English law, for even tiny children to come to court for a live cross-examination. In 1989, the Pigot Committee proposed a scheme under which the whole of a young child's evidence, including cross-examination, would be obtained out of court and in advance of trial. In 1999 a provision designed to give effect to this was included in the Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act, but it has not yet been brought into force. The full Pigot proposal was implemented, however, in Western Australia, and similar schemes operate in a number of European jurisdictions. This book of essays examines a number of these schemes, and argues the case for further reforms in the UK.

Book Synopsis I Don't Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist by : Norman L. Geisler
Download or read book I Don't Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist written by Norman L. Geisler and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2021-05-17 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To some, the concept of having faith in a higher power or a set of religious beliefs is nonsensical. Indeed, many view religion in general, and Christianity in particular, as unfounded and unreasonable. Norman Geisler and Frank Turek argue, however, that Christianity is not only more reasonable than all other belief systems, but is indeed more rational than unbelief itself. With conviction and clear thinking, Geisler and Turek guide readers through some of the traditional, tested arguments for the existence of a creator God. They move into an examination of the source of morality and the reliability of the New Testament accounts concerning Jesus. The final section of the book deals with a detailed investigation of the claims of Christ. This volume will be an interesting read for those skeptical about Christianity, as well as a helpful resource for Christians seeking to articulate a more sophisticated defense of their faith.
Book Synopsis God in My Everything by : Ken Shigematsu
Download or read book God in My Everything written by Ken Shigematsu and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2013-08-06 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ken Shigematsu shows that spiritual formation is more than just solitude and contemplative reflections. Spiritual formation happens in the everyday, in each and every moment of life. For those caught up in the busyness of work, family, and church, it often feels like time with God is just another thing on a crowded “to-do’ list. Ken explains how the time-tested spiritual practice of the “rule of life” can help bring busy people into a closer relationship with God. He shows how a personal rule of life can fit almost any vocation or life situation. In God in My Everything, you will discover how to create and practice a life-giving, sustainable rhythm in the midst of your demanding life. If you long for a deeper spirituality but often feel that the busyness of life makes a close relationship with God challenging—and, at times, seemingly impossible—this book is for you.
