He had intended to adopt the profession of a schoolmaster, which had great attractions for him. He published, while an undergraduate, Apospasmata Critica (Oxford: Blackwell, 1892) and, shortly after taking his degree, Poetarum Latinorum Index (London: Methuen, 1894).
