Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ELIZABETHAN LOVE POETRY A selection of poetry from the golden age of British poetry, the Elizabethan era. All of the major Elizabethan poets are featured in this book, as well as many lesser-known poets. The poets in this book include: Sir Walter Raleigh, Edmund Spenser, Sir Philip Sidney, Nicholas Breton, William Percy, Giles George, Samuel Daniel, Henry Constable, Michael Drayton, Christopher Marlowe, William Shakespeare, Thomas Campion, John Donne, Ben Jonson and Queen Elizabeth the First herself. There are extracts from Elizabethan sonnet cycles by William Shakespeare (the Sonnets), Michael Drayton (Idea), Samuel Daniel (To Delia), Henry Constable (Diana), Edmund Spenser (Amoretti), and Sir Philip (Astrophil and Stella). The full sonnet sequences are included in a companion volume, Elizabethan Sonnet Cycles. The beloved (by convention, nearly always a woman) is at the centre of the Elizabethan love sonnet tradition. As Samuel Daniel puts it in his To Delia sonnet sequence: a]ll my live s sweet consists in her alone, a sentiment found in most Elizabethan sonnet sequences and love poems. "

Book excerpt: This critical literary study looks at the chief poets and philosophers of the Romantic era who, between them, forged a new cult of mystical, lyrical poetry. After a discussion of the key ideas of German Romanticism (infinity, eternity, nostalgia, mythology, Hellenism, extremity, sensuality), Appleby concentrates on the poets: from Goethe, 'the last Renaissance man', as he is sometimes called, to the shamanic, Neoplatonic poet Novalis and his Hymen an die Nacht.

Book excerpt: WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE: THE SONNETS The Sonnets represent the highpoint of love poetry in English: they continue to astonish and delight with the abundance of their word play and the intensity of the erotic feelings they depict. This book prints all of Shakespeare's 154 sonnets and provides a commentary on this narrative of rivalry in love. ? The Sonnets are central to William Shakespeare's art. They display Shakespeare's poetic talent at its height. The Sonnets are the great love poem sequence in British poetry, as well as being the longest single group of English Renaissance sonnets. They rival in grandeur, skill and cleverness the poetic sequence from which they ultimately derive (via Sir Thomas Wyatt): Francesco Petrarch's Rime Sparse. In Shakespeare's Sonnets, introspection and self-analysis is as rigorous as in Petrarch's Canzoniere, but Shakespeare's bitterness and sense of irony is more deeply ingrained than in Petrarch's poems. Shakespeare's Sonnets came late in the development of the Petrarchan sonnet sequence. They are decadent, late efforts of an already (by the 1590s) old-fashioned poetic form. Yet Shakespeare manages to infuse the sonnet sequence with an extraordinary power and magic. The Sonnets, indeed, contain some of the most marvellous moments in any (English) poetry. The magnificence of the opening lines of the Sonnets, for instance, is undeniable: Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? (18.1) Full many a glorious morning have I seen Flatter the mountain tops with sovereign eye, Kissing with golden face the meadows green, Gilding pale streams with heavenly alchemy (33.1-4) Take all my loves, my love, yea, take them all (40.1) Sweet love, renew thy force (56.1) Let me not to the marriage of true minds Admit impediments: love is not love Which alters when it alteration finds, Or bends with the remover to remove. (116.1-4) My love is as a fever, longing still (147.1)

Book excerpt: D.H. LAWRENCE: SYMBOLIC LANDSCAPES This book analyzes the rich discourses of mythology, symbolism, form, eroticism and landscape in D.H.Lawrence's fiction. Jane Foster traces Lawrence's symbols (tigers, suns, fish, peacocks) in many of the short stories, as well as the major novels. 'Spirit of place' was always important for Lawrence, and Foster's study investigates how Lawrence's concept of place informed his fiction, poetry and travel books. EXTRACT Lawrence uses many traditional poetic symbols - flowers, fire, the Moon - but there are some symbols that he has made very much his own: blood, rivers, the phallus, rainbow and the Lawrencean bestiary: horse, phoenix, peacock, dragon, snake, lion, tiger, rabbit and fish. The Lawrencean animals are the most alive of living symbols. There are many symbolic beasts in the poems too: fish, tortoises, snakes, eagles, elephants, mosquitoes, goats, etc. ----- D.H. Lawrence probably uses more flowers in his art than any other comparable writer. The poems are full of flowers - irises, violets, roses, campions - all kinds of flowers, hundreds of flowers, blossoms and plants. He fills his books with flowers rather like the Early Netherlandish painters filled their paintings of the Madonna with heaps of flowers. Lawrence uses flower symbolism to underpin the action and the emotional states of his characters. Ursula, for instance, delights, as Connie Chatterley does, in flowers. They remind her of the beauty of the world when the pain of love becomes too much. In Women in Love, Ursula is transported, to use the old term, by some daisies floating in water: She went along the bank towards the sluice. The daisies were scattered broadcast on the pond, tiny radiant things, like an exaltation, points of exaltation here and there. Why did they move so strongly and mystically? "Look," he said, "your boat of purple paper is escorting them, and they are a convoy of rafts. Some of the daisies came slowly towards her, hesitating, making a shy, bright little cotillion on the dark clear water. Their gay, bright candour moved her so much as they came near, that she was almost in tears. "Why are they so lovely?" she cried. "Why do I think them so lovely?" With illustrations, bibliography and notes.

Book excerpt: A new study of the provocative British artist. Gill fused eroticism and mysticism in clear, direct and fluid graphic lines, which upset parts of the establishment (a couple are shown in one print making love while being blessed by the hand of God; in another, a nude Mary Magdalene embraces Christ on the Cross). Hoyland explores the relationship between the spiritual and the sensual in Gill's many prints and drawings, including the Song of Songs woodcuts.
