Book excerpt: Although the American cowboy has long been a favorite subject for novelists, filmmakers, and illustrators, too often the picture they paint bears little relation to reality. Philip Ashton Rollins, who lived in the West on and off between 1892 and 1924, set out to create a more accurate portrait of this enduring icon. Based on what he himself witnessed, this fascinating study discusses what exactly makes a cowboy, as well as cowboy weaponry, clothing, saddles, and equipment; the "cowboy character;" and a cowboy's work. In addition, Rollins describes the history of ranching in the United States, the raising of horses and cattle, livestock rustling, and more.

Book excerpt: Mercy may sit at God’s right hand, but Judgment sits at his left. And in an untamed country, some men are called to do the work of God’s left hand. This is the story of such a man. This is the story of Tom Cade. To avoid the prospect of a bloody feud, Cade leaves his home at the tender age of 16, with nothing but the wise words of his preacher father and a used Spencer .54. Though he always remembers his father’s words, it is the old Spencer—and his natural-born talent for using it—that comes to save, and shape, his life. His travels lead him to the town of Walker, Kansas, where he aims to settle down and start a family. But he has only traded one feud for another. When vengeful cowards invade his home, Cade doesn’t turn the other cheek. He wields his old Spencer like the wrath of God.

She thought she could walk away from it—from him—without a backward glance. But then she encountered him again, on a secluded Nevada ranch, and realized she was carrying his child.... Jake Griffin wasn't the kind of man a woman could expect to settle down. And yet he wanted to marry her, strictly for the sake of the baby. But she was coming to realize that she wanted so much more than this hard, solitary man was offering her—and she couldn't bring herself to settle for less....

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the western was a staple of cinema for many decades, the form began to fade as its greatest star, John Wayne, made fewer films of distinction toward the end of his career. In the mid-1960s, the genre was redefined by a handful of directors, including Don Siegel and Italian filmmaker Sergio Leone, who offered something edgier, bloodier, and more violent. Working with both directors was an actor who had made a name for himself on the small screen in the hit western Rawhide. While Clint Eastwood would also star in and direct a number of successes with contemporary settings, his work in westerns represents the most significant part of his film career. In The Clint Eastwood Westerns, James L. Neibaur takes a film-by-film look at each of the superstar’s signature works, from A Fistful of Dollars in 1964 to his modern-day classic Unforgiven, which earned him two Academy Awards, including best director. The author discusses in detail the production, impact, influences, and successes (both critical and commercial) of each film. In addition, Neibaur examines the continued success and influence of these works—how they redefined, challenged, and progressed the western genre. The book also features chapters that look at Eastwood’s other films in the context of his overall career. From the spaghetti westerns he made with Leone, including The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly,to his revisionist look at the Old West in Unforgiven, The Clint Eastwood Westerns shines a spotlight on some of the most thrilling films of the genre. For devotees of Eastwood—the actor or director—or simply fans of the western, this book is an entertaining look at one of Hollywood’s most enduring stars.

Practice here is understood both as a critical reflection of a status quo and its history, as well as forms of (active) intervention through designing and planning. The book is a fragmentary snapshot of an on going, constantly developing and altering process to find a place in the production and reflection of our built environment, and implicitly disputes the question: “What is to be done?”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How well do we know our country? Whom do we include when we use the word "American"? These are not just contemporary issues but recurring questions Americans have asked themselves throughout their history--and questions that were addressed when, in 1935, the Roosevelt administration created the Federal Writers' Project (FWP) under the aegis of the Works Progress Administration. Although the immediate context of the FWP was work relief, national FWP officials developed programs that spoke to much larger and longer-standing debates over the nature of American identity and culture and the very definition of who was an American. Hirsch reviews the founding of the FWP and the significance of its American Guide series, considering the choices made by administrators who wanted to celebrate diversity as a positive aspect of American cultural identity. In his exploration of the FWP's other writings, Hirsch discusses the project's pioneering use of oral history in interviews with ordinary southerners, ex-slaves, ethnic minorities, and industrial workers. He also examines congressional critics of the FWP vision; the occasional opposition of local Federal Writers, especially in the South; and how the FWP's vision changed in response to the challenge of World War II. In the course of this study, Hirsch raises thought-provoking questions about the relationships between diversity and unity, government and culture, and, ultimately, culture and democracy.
