Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Court Rolls of the Honor of Clitheroe, in the County of Lancaster: Translated and Transcribed From the Original Rolls, Preserved in the Public Record Office, London and at Clitheroe Castle Clitheroe contained in this volume relate to the manors of Accrington and Haslingden, in the ancient parish of Whalley, and that of Tottington, in the parish of Bury, and cover the period down to the year 1567. This volume completes the work undertaken by the writer more than twenty years ago, and, with the two volumes already issued, places at the di5posal of the public the whole of the matter contained in the earlier Rolls of this great and important Honor down to the year named. Whilst it is a matter of congratulation to the students of local history that so much material illustrating the history of the past has been preserved to the present day, there is also a sense of regret that the local officers of the Crown did not take greater care of the earlier records, which belonged to the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. A commission1 issued on 22 June, 22 Elizabeth to Ralph Asshton, the younger, one of the particular receivers of the possessions of the Duchy of Lancaster, and Edward Braddell, surveyor of woods in the north parts, to make a list of the Court Rolls in Clitheroe Castle, and to cause a strong and sure chest to be made for the safe keeping of the Records, Court Rolls, and other evidences, resulted in the following report made on the II October following. Book Synopsis Love, Hate, and the Law in Tudor England by : L. R. Poos
Download or read book Love, Hate, and the Law in Tudor England written by L. R. Poos and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-21 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love, Hate, and the Law in Tudor England reconstructs the life of Ralph Rishton, a member of the sixteenth-century Lancashire gentry who was a child bridegroom and a serial wife-discarder, who bribed church officials to obtain a forged annulment, defrauded a kinsman out of his inheritance, and adroitly manipulated his own and other people's land. The dozens of lawsuits in which the Rishtons were involved, in many different courts, elucidate one family's engagement with law in Tudor England: how they used and misused law, how it shaped their perceptions of rights and mutual obligations, and how it framed litigants' and witnesses' language. Drawing upon trial and estate records, the core of this study is the central narrative of Ralph Rishton's three wives, of litigiousness and violence, marriage and property, and the pursuit of equitable resolutions to disputes, along with countless smaller narratives that vividly capture a culture in its time and place. Alongside that central narrative, L. R. Poos uses the Rishton stories as a starting-point to analyse child marriage, the construction of memory, and the development of local historical identity through antiquarians and the Victorian and Edwardian local press, demonstrating how - from the time of the Rishtons into the twentieth century - historical narratives were continually reshaped and repurposed.
Book Synopsis Lordship, State Formation and Local Authority in Late Medieval and Early Modern England by : Spike Gibbs
Download or read book Lordship, State Formation and Local Authority in Late Medieval and Early Modern England written by Spike Gibbs and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-27 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing a new narrative of how local authority and social structures adapted in response to the decline of lordship and the process of state formation, Spike Gibbs uses manorial officeholding – where officials were chosen from among tenants to help run the lord's manorial estate – as a prism through which to examine political and social change in the late medieval and early modern English village. Drawing on micro-studies of previously untapped archival records, the book spans the medieval/early modern divide to examine changes between 1300 and 1650. In doing so, Gibbs demonstrates the vitality of manorial structures across the medieval and early modern era, the active and willing participation of tenants in these frameworks, and the way this created inequalities within communities.
