Book excerpt: Buck's life had been a success. For fifty years everything worked, then it all began to fall apart. He quit his job, knocked about an empty house awkwardly filled by him and his wife, and couldn't think of a way to change anything. Buck started pouring over maps of remote forests; then he bought a donkey; then he decided to plunge headfirst into the wilds of Montana. This is his story, at once unique and paradigmatic. Buck stumbles from hidden valleys and upland ridges to the summit of the Rock Candy Mountain. He comes face to face with terror and love, true friendship and the magic of a young girl's dream. In a quest for that-which-cannot-be-defined, Buck seeks it...and finds it. Bucks journey, and ours with him, are worth taking. Mountain Lyrics is a great read. ~ Mike Donohue Like reading a secret message from my soul. ~ Jerome Leveque This is a page turner as Bucks vision quest takes him to places hes never known existedinside himself. A must read. ~ Milt Rowland

Book excerpt: Be encouraged. Every fear you face has already been overcome! When it comes to fear, God has some pretty specific directions on what you are supposed to do: Fear not! God is serious about helping you become fearless. Some variation of the phrase, “Fear not” appears in the Bible at least 365 times. Fear is a serious issue as it holds you back from fulfilling the incredible calling God has on your life, and fear paralyzes you from enjoying abundant life in Christ. In this 91-Day devotional, Joe Pileggi shows you from Scripture and personal experience how to exchange a lifestyle of fear for a lifestyle of encouragement, hope and peace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book-length critical study of the black experience in the Vietnam War and its aftermath, this text interrogates the meaning of heroism based on models from African and African American expressive culture. It focuses on four novels: Captain Blackman (1972) by John A. Williams, Tragic Magic (1978) by Wesley Brown, Coming Home (1971) by George Davis, and De Mojo Blues (1985) by A. R. Flowers. Discussions of the novels are framed within the historical context of all wars prior to Vietnam in which Black Americans fought. The success or failure of the hero on his identity quest is predicated upon the extent to which he can reconnect with African or African American cultural memory. He is engaged therefore in “re-membering,” a term laden with the specificity of race that implies a cultural history comprised of African retentions and an interdependent relationship with the community for survival. The reader will find that a common history of racism and exploitation that African Americans and Vietnamese share sometimes results in the hero’s empathy with and compassion for the so-called enemy, a unique contribution of the black novelist to American war literature.

Book excerpt: Discover the fascinating, crucial, and often dangerous relationship between Michelangelo and the stone quarries of Carrara in this clear-eyed and well-researched exploration that “recounts the artist's large life and lasting works with care and reverence” (Booklist). No artist looms so large in Western consciousness and culture as Michelangelo Buonarroti, the most celebrated sculptor of all time. And no place on earth provides a stone so capable of simulating the warmth and vitality of human flesh and incarnating the genius of a Michelangelo as the statuario of Carrara, the storied marble mecca at Tuscany's northwest corner. It was there, where shadowy Etruscans and Roman slaves once toiled, that Michelangelo risked his life in dozens of harrowing expeditions to secure the precious stone for his Pietà, Moses, and other masterpieces. Many books have recounted Michelangelo’s achievements in Florence and Rome. Michelangelo’s Mountain goes beyond all of them, revealing his escapades and ordeals in the spectacular landscape that was the third pole of his tumultuous career and the third wellspring of his art. Eric Scigliano brings this haunting place and eternally fascinating artist to life in a sweeping tale peopled by popes and poets, mad dukes and mythic monsters, scheming courtiers and rough-hewn quarrymen. He recounts the saga of the David, the improbable masterpiece that Michelangelo created against all odds, of the twin Hercules that he tried to erect beside it, and of the Salieri-like nemesis who snatched away the commission, turning a sculptural testament to liberty into a bitter symbol of tyranny and giving Florence the colossus it loves to hate. In showing how the artist, land, and stone transformed one another, Scigliano brings fresh insight to Michelangelo's most cherished works and illuminates his struggles with the princes and potentates of Carrara, Rome, and Medici Florence, who raised intrigue to a high art.

Book excerpt: In the shifting sands of today’s uncertain world, where traditional paradigms are fragmenting and everything seems in a state of flux, the biblical mountains endure as unshakable and steadfast. In their caves and canyons linger ancient voices that can startle us into new insights and awaken in us new ways of seeing the world and ourselves. In this book we go on a quest to locate the ancient voices of those who actually lived in these mountains, who knew both the physical contours and spiritual secrets of the summits and who long pondered their mysteries. We will rediscover texts and fragments that have been long forgotten in the West. The pandemic has filled the world with uncertainty and fear. We will discover wisdom and insights that are strikingly relevant to this unfolding world crisis and that speak with an uncanny directness to our situation. But the wisdom here is timeless and enduring, and readers will benefit from these ancient voices in all generations and in all sorts of circumstances. This book is not so much an anthology of forgotten voices as a sourcebook of spirituality and a guidebook for the spiritual adventure.

In this collection of essays, sermons, and meditations, an ordained priest in the Anglican tradition defends the use of the term and argues that the renewal of the priesthood of the people requires an appropriate appreciation of the power and dignity of holy orders. This book, which comes out of thirty years of pastoral ministry, is an encouragement to the ordained to persevere in love and thus fulfill the calling to keep alive at the heart of the church the sacrificial love of Jesus Christ, the great high priest.
