However, with an increasing price level, mill margins usually increase at a lesser'rate than do cotton prices so that they equal a smaller per centage of the total when both cloth and cotton prices are high. For example, during the 21 seasons (1925 h5) for which mill margins have been computed cotton prices have averaged 15 cents or higher for 12 seasons and mill margins for such years averaged A7 percent.of total cloth prices and exceeded 50 percent for only '3 of these years. During the 0 years when cotton prices averaged under 15 cents, mill margins averaged 55 percent of total cloth prices and fell under 50 percent for only one season. At present, this pattern is not being followed. Despite the present high level of cloth and cotton prices compared with the 19h5 season or earlier. Mill margins in angry were equal to 63 percent of total cloth prices This compares with h3 percent for August and the 1935 - 39 average of 5h percent. The rapid advance since August has resulted from the downward adjustment in cotton prices in October and increases in cloth prices above former ceilings.
